Switching FFmpeg to NVENC and then seeing dropped frames does not prove NVENC caused them. First separate local encoding problems from YouTube ingest settings and outbound network delivery; then verify that the VPS actually exposes a supported NVIDIA GPU, driver, and FFmpeg encoder. The provider, GPU, command, and YouTube health errors are unspecified, so there is no evidence to identify a single cause for this server.
Capture evidence before changing settings again
Keep the next test as controlled as possible: compare the stream before and after the encoder change under otherwise similar load, and record what happened at each stage.
- Save the exact FFmpeg command and complete startup and runtime output, plus the FFmpeg version and build configuration.
- Record the GPU model and whether the process can see it; where available, run
nvidia-smi -L. Note the NVIDIA driver version. - Write down the output codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate.
- Save YouTube Live Control Room stream-health errors with their timestamps.
- Record CPU and GPU utilization during the test, and check whether a local recording contains gaps or irregular frames.
- Measure sustained outbound throughput and stability from the VPS. A general speed test can help, but may not reflect the route to YouTube’s ingest or a sustained stream.
Align YouTube’s timestamped messages with FFmpeg logs and host or network measurements. This turns “frames dropped” into a question about where they were lost.
Check whether the VPS can actually use NVENC
NVENC in the FFmpeg command is not proof that this VPS can access a compatible NVIDIA device. NVIDIA’s FFmpeg guidance requires supported hardware and an appropriate driver and FFmpeg build. Its documented encoder names include h264_nvenc, hevc_nvenc, and av1_nvenc; its guide also describes listing available GPUs with nvidia-smi -L and selecting a GPU when a system has multiple devices. Check the guidance for the installed software version at NVIDIA’s FFmpeg hardware-acceleration guide.

Before troubleshooting YouTube, test a short local encode with the intended encoder and inspect FFmpeg’s output for errors. Confirm the model, driver, device visibility, and build support rather than inferring GPU access from the VPS plan name or an encoder name in a command. NVIDIA describes NVENC as a dedicated hardware encoder independent of CUDA and graphics cores, but that does not establish that FFmpeg’s other work—such as filtering, audio, muxing, and frame production—or the VPS allocation and network are healthy. See NVIDIA’s NVENC application note.
Determine whether the failure is local or at YouTube ingest
YouTube advises checking the stream in the encoder. If picture or sound is already bad there, inspect encoder errors and CPU load and check the local archive for audio or video problems. If the encoder output looks and sounds healthy, investigate the outbound internet connection. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance is at Troubleshoot live stream errors.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Local archive has gaps or irregular frames: the problem is present before or during local output. Compare FFmpeg errors, resource use, and the archive timeline to find where frame production or encoding falters.
- Local archive is clean, but YouTube reports interruptions: that points toward a later stage, such as stream configuration or delivery, but is an inference rather than proof. Check the timestamped YouTube message and measure the outbound path.
- YouTube reports a configuration error: address the named format, bitrate, video setting, or keyframe issue before changing hosts.
Do not treat an isolated speed-test result as proof of the sustained capacity or stability of the actual ingest route.
Match the stream to YouTube’s ingest recommendations
Use the row for the stream’s actual codec, resolution, and frame rate. The figures below are YouTube’s published minimum and recommended ingestion bitrates, not measurements of this VPS’s available upload capacity.

| Codec and output | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| H.264, 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| H.264, 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| H.264, 720p60 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265, 1080p60 | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
For RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, and recommends constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Its error guidance says a 2-second keyframe interval is 60 frames at 30 fps. See Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and Troubleshoot live stream errors.
Choose a bitrate that fits both the relevant codec-and-output recommendation and the VPS’s measured, sustained upload, with practical headroom. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and representative content—including audio and movement—before a live stream, and monitoring stream health. Do not apply H.264 figures to AV1 or H.265. YouTube’s guidance is general; it does not establish what this particular VPS can deliver.

Choose a remedy only after the checks
- GPU or encoder prerequisites fail: confirm that the provider exposes a compatible GPU to the VPS and that the driver and FFmpeg build support it. A GPU-enabled VPS or cloud GPU instance is a conditional option only if usable GPU access is unavailable on the current host; confirm the specific host’s availability and compatibility first.
- Local output is bad, but NVENC prerequisites are met: use the FFmpeg errors, resource measurements, and local recording to isolate encoding or another local processing stage. Compare with a short test using a different encoder or simpler processing, changing one variable at a time.
- Local output is clean, but upload is insufficient or unstable: reduce output demands—such as resolution, frame rate, or bitrate—to a level the measured path can sustain, then test again. Consider a different host only if measurements show a host or outbound-path limitation.
- YouTube flags format, bitrate, video settings, or keyframes: correct the reported setting and retest before making a hardware change.
The fact that the VPS is in India does not by itself show that its network route is faulty. The official guidance cited here does not identify a cause or prevalence rate for NVENC-related drops on Indian VPS instances.

| Symptom | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg reports an NVENC or device error | GPU visibility, supported model, driver, FFmpeg build, and the encoder name used | Resolve device or compatibility issues and verify with a short local encode. |
| Local recording contains missing or irregular frames | FFmpeg errors, CPU/GPU utilization, and the recording timeline | Investigate local frame production, encoding, and processing; do not start by blaming YouTube’s network path. |
| Local recording is intact, while YouTube reports dropped frames or interruptions | Timestamped stream-health messages, ingest settings, sustained upload capacity, and stability | Fix any named configuration issue, then measure the VPS’s outbound delivery. |
| YouTube reports an incorrect format, bitrate, video setting, or keyframe frequency | Codec, output mode, CBR setting, bitrate, and keyframe interval | Match the applicable YouTube recommendation and run a representative test stream. |
| Stream is reliable at a lower output setting | Whether the former bitrate exceeded stable outbound capacity or the former output setting was otherwise unsustainable | Keep testing one change at a time; use measured results to decide whether a lower setting or a different host is warranted. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube channel playing uploaded videos rather than a camera feed, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
