Wirecast YouTube Stream Ends After 12 Hours: Causes and Workarounds

If a Wirecast YouTube stream stops at 12 hours, first verify whether the live event ended or only its archive is missing. Then check output status, system load, upload capacity, and destination settings.

A YouTube stream ending at 12 hours is not, by itself, proof that YouTube imposed a 12-hour live-stream cutoff. YouTube’s current encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that statement is about archiving, not a promise that every broadcast is stopped at 12 hours. Check whether the event actually ended in YouTube Live Control Room before troubleshooting Wirecast or changing your setup.

What YouTube’s 12-hour guidance actually says

YouTube Help states: “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” The threshold applies to automatic archiving. The cited guidance does not say that YouTube automatically ends every live broadcast at 12 hours, nor does it establish what will happen to every stream that reaches or exceeds that duration. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder (guidance accessed October 3, 2026).

That distinction matters: a stream can appear to have a problem because an archive is missing, incomplete, or not yet visible even when the live event has not ended. Conversely, an event can really disconnect because of an encoder, network, destination, or system-capacity issue. The clock alone cannot distinguish these cases.

First determine whether the broadcast actually stopped

  1. Check YouTube Live Control Room. Open the event and confirm whether YouTube marks it live or ended. Check the preview and whether the event remains accessible. YouTube’s operational guidance recommends monitoring the stream and checking that it is reaching viewers: YouTube Help: Live streaming tips.
  2. Check Wirecast’s output status. Determine whether Wirecast still reports an active output or shows a lost connection, error, or stopped output. Compare that with the event status and preview in YouTube.
  3. Do not use archive visibility as the only test. If the event is still marked live, a missing or incomplete archive is not enough to conclude that the broadcast was terminated. Check the channel’s Live tab later and preserve your local recording.

Diagnose the symptom you see

What you observe What it may indicate What to check next
Event still marked live, but no archive is visible or the archive is incomplete Archive processing or a difference between live status and archive behavior Live Control Room status, the channel’s Live tab, and your local recording. YouTube’s under-12-hour archive statement does not establish that the live event ended.
Wirecast reports lost output, or YouTube no longer receives the feed A connection, destination, server, or network interruption Wirecast output status, YouTube preview, configured destination, and upload capacity. Telestream notes that YouTube primary servers can sometimes be unavailable.
Dropped frames, stream termination, or application exceptions Computer load or system capacity may be contributing Monitor CPU usage and other system load during the stream. Telestream advises keeping system CPU below 60% while streaming; this is its troubleshooting recommendation, not a YouTube rule or a proven threshold for your incident.
Upload capacity is exceeded or delivery is unstable The stream’s data rate may exceed available upload or delivery capacity Test the upload path and reduce data rate. If needed, reduce frame rate or frame size as well.
Wirecast’s native YouTube destination fails to authenticate, connect, or behave correctly A destination-specific or service-side problem Check the instructions for your installed Wirecast version, any applicable backup-server option, and the RTMP workaround described below.

These are diagnostic possibilities, not a finding about any individual stream. Without the Wirecast version, event settings, logs, network measurements, or a reproduction, the cause of a particular interruption cannot be established.

Work through the recovery steps in order

  1. Establish what ended. Compare Live Control Room’s event status with Wirecast’s output status and YouTube’s preview. A missing archive alone does not show that the broadcast stopped.
  2. Protect the recording. Record locally and verify that the file is growing during the broadcast. Afterward, check that the local archive is intact and usable. YouTube’s operational tips recommend checking local archive files and confirming that the file size is growing: YouTube Help: Live streaming tips.
  3. Check system and delivery capacity. Review CPU load, dropped frames, upload capacity, and whether Wirecast remains connected. If delivery is unstable, lower the data rate; if necessary, lower frame rate or frame size. Telestream describes high CPU usage as a possible contributor to dropped frames, stream termination, and exceptions: Telestream Wirecast support.
  4. Verify the Wirecast destination setup. Confirm the selected YouTube destination, event, encoder, and connection. Telestream’s Wirecast 16 guide describes the YouTube destination and notes that a backup server may be selected in certain authentication or connection-failure cases. The interface can differ by version, so follow the guide for the version you have installed: Wirecast 16 User Guide.
  5. Use RTMP only when the destination is the problem. Telestream’s version history documents RTMP output to a YouTube account as a workaround for issues with the native YouTube output destination: Telestream Wirecast version history. It is a destination workaround, not a way to change YouTube’s archive handling or a documented method to bypass a duration limit.
  6. For an event that must run beyond 12 hours, plan a monitored handoff or restart. Test the procedure before relying on it. Keep the local recording running, and verify the replacement event or feed in Live Control Room before considering the handoff complete. This is cautious operational planning, not a guarantee about YouTube’s behavior above 12 hours.
