For one finite video, put FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 option before that file’s -i input: it tells FFmpeg to repeat the input indefinitely instead of stopping at end-of-file. A loop will not rescue a crashed process, fix a failed YouTube connection, or automatically repeat a multi-file playlist, so first identify what actually stopped.
Loop a single input file
FFmpeg’s command-line documentation defines -stream_loop as an input option; -1 means infinite looping. FFmpeg options apply to the next input or output and reset between files, so place the loop option immediately before the -i it controls.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4
-c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv "$YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL"
This is a structural example, not a production-ready command for every source. Choose codecs, bitrate, stream mapping, audio handling, and the ingest URL to match the media and YouTube stream configuration. Do not put a real stream key in published examples, shared command history, or logs.
Confirm the loop works before scheduling the stream
- Run the command against the exact file and FFmpeg build you intend to use.
- Check that both audio and video continue across the loop boundary. Source timing, codec, or timestamp characteristics may require transcoding or other adjustments.
- Watch the outgoing stream at the boundary; do not assume that reaching the next iteration guarantees clean playback.
Find out what “ran out of input files” means
The phrase can describe several different failures. The remedy depends on which one occurred.

| What happened | What to do | What looping will not do |
|---|---|---|
| One file reached end-of-file | Use -stream_loop -1 before that input if repeating the same content is acceptable. |
It does not make repeated content varied; viewers will see or hear the same material again. |
| A multi-file playlist ended | Configure or extend the playlist/concat workflow so it has another item or repeats as intended; test its actual final transition. | Looping one input does not necessarily loop the whole playlist. |
| FFmpeg exited or failed | Inspect the exit status and logs to diagnose an encoder crash, invalid media, missing file, or output failure. | An input loop cannot recover a process that has stopped. |
| YouTube ingest became unhealthy | Check stream health and the specific error in YouTube Live Control Room. | Do not assume an ingest problem means the input reached end-of-file. |
Playlist behavior depends on the demuxer and how the playlist is built. There is no single verified command here that guarantees every playlist format will repeat, or a universal in-place reload method. Test the playlist itself rather than applying a single-file loop flag and assuming it covers all its items.
Check the YouTube output configuration
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you plan to send. YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS as supported protocols and recommends constant bitrate (CBR). Its keyframe-frequency recommendation is 2 seconds, with a maximum of 4 seconds. Bitrate recommendations vary by ingestion codec, resolution, and frame rate; there is no one bitrate that fits every stream.

- Prefer RTMPS when supported. YouTube describes it as an encrypted extension of RTMP.
- Keep the stream key private. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube’s live-stream settings and update the sender.
- Before going live, test with audio and movement similar to the intended broadcast, then monitor stream health. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- Use only media you have the rights to stream. Repeating a recording does not grant permission to use its music, gameplay, or other copyrighted material; check the applicable rights and YouTube policies for your content.
Keep a long-running broadcast operational
Input looping and process supervision solve different problems. Looping keeps a healthy FFmpeg process from reaching end-of-file on a loopable input. A supervisor can restart a process that exits, but restarting alone does not make a finite input infinite.
- Test the media loop and output with the intended file, codecs, audio, and ingest settings.
- Monitor FFmpeg’s exit status and logs as one signal, and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health as a separate signal.
- If the host or process must recover from failures, configure an appropriate supervisor and alerting. Verify that a restart uses a valid input and output configuration.
- For playlists, verify the last-item transition and intended next item or fallback by observing the stream output at that point.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived in its encoder setup help. That is an archive condition, not a promise that FFmpeg will remain running or that YouTube will accept one uninterrupted feed indefinitely.

Choose the fix that matches the failure
| Approach | Use it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
Loop one input with -stream_loop -1 |
The same file can intentionally repeat. | Simple, but repetition is visible or audible and the input still needs validation. |
| Repeat a playlist or provide a next item | Several files should play in order. | Playlist and demuxer behavior varies; test the playlist’s own repeat/transition logic. |
| Send a fallback slate or loop while recovering or waiting for new media | The primary feed may disappear or new media arrives asynchronously. | More complex; requires compatible audio/video streams and process logic. |
These approaches address media availability. A process supervisor addresses process failure; it does not replace playlist configuration or input looping.

The command still stops at the end of the file
Check that -stream_loop -1 appears before the relevant -i. Because FFmpeg options apply to the next input or output, placing it after the input will not configure that input as intended.

The video repeats but audio cuts out or drifts
Test the exact source at the loop boundary. Inspect the file’s audio/video streams and timestamps, then adjust mapping or transcoding as appropriate for that media. The example command is not a guarantee of seamless looping for every file.
The playlist plays once and stops
Configure the playlist or concat workflow itself to provide another item or repeat. A flag applied to one input is not a universal playlist-loop mechanism; verify behavior with the actual demuxer and playlist format.

FFmpeg is no longer running
Read the exit status and logs. Fix the underlying process, media, host, or output problem, and use a supervisor if automatic process restart is required. A restarted process still needs a looping input or continuing playlist.
YouTube reports a stream-health error
Use the Live Control Room’s specific health message to investigate ingest and encoder settings. Confirm that the selected protocol, codec, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and keyframe interval match YouTube’s current guidance for the stream.
Or let it run in the cloud
