To set a “cue point” on YouTube Live, choose when to place a mid-roll ad in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. YouTube calls these breaks mid-roll ads, not cue points. You can let YouTube place them automatically, schedule them at set intervals, or insert them manually; a Stream Deck is optional.
What “cue points” mean on YouTube Live
Creators often use “cue point” to mean a point in a livestream when an ad break should occur. YouTube’s documented feature is mid-roll ads. The controls are part of live-stream monetization in Live Control Room, so you do not need a separate device to place a break manually. YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance explains the available approaches.
Choose how YouTube places mid-roll ads
Turn on monetization for the livestream, then select an ad approach in Live Control Room. YouTube’s help page describes three options:
- Automatic: YouTube recommends and places mid-rolls. YouTube’s help recommends automatic placement as the default; it says earnings potential may be lower with scheduled or manual placement. That is YouTube’s platform guidance, not a promise about an individual stream’s revenue.
- Scheduled: Set breaks at 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30-minute intervals. This sets a cadence, not a guarantee that a viewer will see an ad at each interval.
- Manual: Insert mid-rolls yourself in Live Control Room. If you do not insert any, no mid-rolls will be served in manual mode.
Pre-roll and display ads are automatically on when a monetized channel turns on stream monetization. Mid-roll ad slots are not guaranteed to fill: YouTube’s ad systems decide whether to serve an ad based on several factors. If no ad runs, viewers continue watching the live stream.

Protect an important moment from an automatic break
If you use automatic mid-rolls and need to protect a key moment, use Delay ads in Live Control Room. It delays automatic mid-rolls for 10 minutes, then gives a five-second countdown before they resume. Manually placed mid-rolls still display while Delay ads is enabled, so it does not suppress a break you insert yourself.
Taking a temporary break
Live Control Room also offers a Take a Break control and an optional away slate. You can set the temporary away screen for one, three, or five minutes. The break does not end automatically when the countdown reaches zero; end it in Live Control Room. If you add an away overlay through an encoder, it can be used as a browser source if the encoder supports that. The overlay does not mute your audio sources, so mute your microphone before stepping away.

Use a Stream Deck or insert breaks without extra hardware
A Stream Deck is an optional physical control for creators who already produce from a desk. YouTube documents inserting ads using Elgato’s Stream Deck plugin, which you download and configure. Check current plugin and device compatibility before buying or setting up a particular model. You can instead insert mid-rolls directly in Live Control Room without purchasing a cueing device.
Set up an encoder-based YouTube livestream
An encoder is useful for gameplay, screen sharing, external audio or video equipment, and more involved productions. It is not required just to cue mid-roll ads: Live Control Room has manual ad controls. YouTube supports software and hardware encoders and recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events. See its encoder setup guide and stream settings guidance.

- Enable live streaming. Verify your channel and check that it has no live-streaming restrictions from the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours. Review YouTube’s live-stream eligibility requirements.
- Create or schedule the stream. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live. Create a stream in the Stream tab, or schedule one in Manage. Scheduling gives you an event page that viewers can find and use for reminders.
- Copy the stream URL and key into your encoder. In YouTube, get the stream URL and stream key; enter them in the encoder’s server and key fields. Treat the key like a password. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace it in the encoder.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room, then check picture and sound before selecting Go live. For a scheduled event, YouTube recommends configuring the encoder at least two hours beforehand and starting it at least 15 minutes before the event.
- Verify the public stream. Check that the event appears on your channel and watch pages, including on mobile, and monitor sound and picture. When finished, stop the stream in YouTube and in the encoder. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived.
Other ways a YouTube livestream can earn
Mid-roll ads are not the only possible revenue source. YouTube lists ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers in Live Chat, and channel memberships. Availability depends on channel eligibility and applicable feature requirements; consult YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance for the current details.
You can review revenue from live broadcasts and replays in YouTube Analytics by applying the Live filter. YouTube also says ads are turned off on an embedded live player when autoplay is enabled, which matters if viewers primarily watch an embedded stream.

Troubleshoot cue points and livestream setup
- No mid-roll appears after a cue: An ad slot is not a guaranteed ad. YouTube decides whether to fill it; viewers continue watching if no ad is served.
- No mid-rolls appear in manual mode: Manual mode does not insert breaks on its own. Place them in Live Control Room during the stream.
- An automatic break disrupts a key segment: Enable Delay ads before that segment to delay automatic mid-rolls for 10 minutes. Remember that manually inserted breaks still display.
- The encoder does not connect: Check that the server field contains the stream URL and the key field contains the current stream key. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
- The event is not ready when expected: First-time live enablement can take up to 24 hours. For scheduled streams, follow YouTube’s lead times: configure the encoder at least two hours before the event and start it at least 15 minutes before.
- Viewers see an away slate but still hear you: The slate does not mute audio sources. Mute the microphone or other audio in the encoder before stepping away.
Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo keeps the stream running in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
- Any quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, streamed as uploaded without re-encoding.
- Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card required.
