Neither Google Cloud Compute Engine nor AWS EC2 is a proven faster choice for streaming to YouTube from India. YouTube needs an encoder with a stream URL and key; it does not require that encoder to run on a cloud VM. If you do need a VM for a custom encoder, processing task or automation, compare the exact instance, India region, network route and sustained stream test—not just the provider’s headline bandwidth figures.
Do you need a cloud VM to stream to YouTube?
Not necessarily. YouTube’s encoder setup asks you to provide a stream URL and stream key to an encoder; it does not prescribe Google Cloud or AWS. A VM is relevant when you have a particular workload to host—for example, a custom encoder, video processing or automation. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
Also distinguish a single feed sent to YouTube from a system that sends video directly to viewers. They have different network paths and potentially different transfer costs. The comparison below concerns an encoder VM sending an ingest feed to YouTube, not a complete viewer-distribution pipeline.

For its general external-destination flows, Google documents a 3 Gbps per-flow limit and notes that per-instance maximum egress is not guaranteed. Actual results can depend on machine limits, tier, route, project quota, packet size, protocol overhead, drivers, operating-system configuration and congestion. AWS likewise qualifies its instance bandwidth. Its documentation gives examples of an m5.8xlarge with 32 vCPUs at 10 Gbps and an m5.16xlarge with 64 vCPUs at 20 Gbps; in that example, traffic through an internet gateway may use only 50% of available bandwidth. These are examples, not suggested sizes for a YouTube stream. For many instances with 16 vCPUs or fewer, AWS describes baseline-plus-burst network I/O credits; bursting is best effort and typically lasts 5 to 60 minutes. Which is faster from India for a YouTube live stream?
The available specifications do not establish a winner. Google’s and AWS’s published figures use different conditions and do not measure the same India-to-YouTube path. A maximum, burst allowance or internal VM bandwidth figure cannot tell you whether your encoder will sustain its target bitrate without packet loss or dropped frames.

- Choose a specific instance type and region for each provider, and confirm current availability and quota.
- Use the same operating system, encoder, codec, protocol, resolution, frame rate and target bitrate.
- Send to YouTube using the intended ingest configuration, and measure sustained upload, packet loss, encoder-dropped frames and YouTube stream health.
- Test for at least the length and operating pattern you expect to use. A brief burst test does not establish that a stream will remain stable for a long event.
That is a workload test, not a generic provider benchmark. No India route test or matched-price VM comparison is established by the cited provider documentation.

There is no defensible all-in price without an instance, region, runtime, discount status, tax treatment and architecture. Separate the cost of compute from transfer, and classify the destination correctly.

Google’s network pricing page lists Mumbai (asia-south1) and Delhi (asia-south2) among its Premium Tier India locations. Its no-charge YouTube line should not be generalized to arbitrary internet egress or viewer delivery. AWS’s EC2 On-Demand pricing page describes its transfer allowance and rate structure; confirm the live rate table, account eligibility and destination for your deployment.

Do not use the AWS managed live-streaming solution’s example total as the price of a VM feeding YouTube. Its estimate is for a larger encoding, packaging and viewer-distribution pipeline in US East (N. Virginia), with stated viewer, bitrate, cache and usage assumptions. For example, the guide’s roughly $69.74 estimate is for a one-hour SD-540p event with about 1,000 viewers—not an India EC2-to-YouTube quote. See AWS’s deployment planning guide.
Set the YouTube encoder before sizing the VM
Pick the output you actually need before comparing instances. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP, and provides bitrate recommendations by codec, resolution and frame rate. For H.264 at 1080p60, the guidance lists 12 Mbps as a recommended bitrate. That is an ingest recommendation, not a promise of image quality or a requirement to use cloud compute.

- Allow upload headroom above the target bitrate for protocol overhead and any backup feed you configure.
- Test with representative video movement and audio, and check YouTube’s stream-health messages during the test.
- Measure upload performance: a fast download connection does not prove that the encoder can sustain the required outbound stream.
- Use RTMPS where the encoder supports it. Protect the stream key from logs, screenshots and public configuration; rotate it if it is exposed.
Before broadcasting, make sure you have the rights needed for the video and audio you use. Permission to stream and eligibility for monetization are separate questions; check YouTube’s current rules for your content rather than assuming that a technically healthy stream settles either one.

Choose a provider—or avoid managing a VM
Choose Compute Engine when its specific fit is verified
It can make sense if the required machine and quota are available in your chosen region, your route test meets the stream target, and the YouTube-destination transfer treatment fits your architecture. Do not assume every outbound byte is free; viewer delivery and other destinations have separate pricing.
Choose EC2 when its specific fit is verified
EC2 can make sense if the exact instance and regional route sustain the feed, the baseline or burst behavior suits the runtime, and your full compute and transfer bill works for the account. Check whether your workload is likely to outlast any credit-based burst behavior.

Troubleshooting a cloud-hosted YouTube stream
- YouTube reports an unstable or unhealthy stream: check the outbound path and sustained upload first; compare the configured bitrate with YouTube’s recommendation for the selected codec, resolution and frame rate, then review stream-health messages.
- The stream begins well, then drops frames: a short test may not reveal sustained-capacity limits. Check whether the AWS instance relies on burst credits, and review VM CPU, encoder output, packet loss and network route on either provider.
- The VM bandwidth number looks ample, but the feed struggles: verify that the figure applies to the external destination and traffic direction. Provider maximums are not guarantees, and network conditions and configuration affect actual results.
- The bill is higher than expected: separate VM runtime from network transfer, check whether traffic went to YouTube or another destination, and confirm region, volume tiers, account allowance and current rates in the billing pages.
- The stream key may have been exposed: replace or rotate the key in YouTube’s live control settings and update the protected encoder configuration. Do not leave it in public logs or screenshots.
