Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRun FFmpeg as a foreground process in a systemd service, then set a restart policy and delay. For example, an FFmpeg-user report used Restart=always with RestartSec=5; treat those values as a starting point, not a universal setting. A service manager can relaunch an exited process, but that alone does not confirm YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
What automatic restarting can—and cannot—recover
A systemd restart policy supervises the FFmpeg process and can start it again after an exit, subject to the selected policy and the host’s start-rate limits. The example values above come from an individual FFmpeg-user report, not a tested configuration for every Ubuntu host. Check the service documentation installed on your system for exact policy behavior and limits. FFmpeg-user example · systemd restart and start-limit logic
This covers a process that exits. It does not necessarily detect a process that remains alive but stops making progress, nor prove that YouTube’s viewer-facing broadcast is healthy. You need to inspect the service and its logs, and verify the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room.
Run FFmpeg under systemd
1. Prepare the existing FFmpeg command
Use the FFmpeg command that already produces your intended stream, but run it in the foreground as the service’s main process. A backgrounded or detached child process may not be tracked as intended by the service manager. The command, input, output protocol, and encoding settings depend on your setup; the available sources do not establish a universal command or recommended bitrate, resolution, or keyframe interval.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Protect the YouTube stream key. Avoid putting it in a public repository or exposing it in logs. Use restrictive file permissions or a credentials mechanism supported by your host and service configuration.
2. Create a service unit
Create a unit for your stream and place the existing FFmpeg command in its ExecStart= setting. Set the appropriate working directory and run-as user for your files and host. Keep FFmpeg in the foreground so systemd can supervise its process. This is a configuration outline, not a drop-in unit: paths, user names, command arguments, and key handling must match your system.

3. Choose a restart policy and delay
Add a deliberate Restart= policy and a RestartSec= delay. The mailing-list example uses Restart=always and RestartSec=5. A policy that restarts after normal exits as well as failures may be appropriate for an always-on loop, but choose based on how your FFmpeg command exits and what you want a manual stop to do. Verify the semantics against your installed systemd documentation. The delay avoids an immediate retry loop; repeated failures can still hit systemd’s start-rate limit.
4. Reload, enable, and start the service
After saving the unit, reload systemd’s unit definitions, enable the service if it should start at boot, and start it. Use systemctl status with your unit name to inspect its state and journalctl -u with that unit name to read its logs. These are standard inspection commands; no command was tested against your host or stream, so substitute your actual unit name and check the installed command documentation where needed.

5. Verify the YouTube broadcast
Once FFmpeg starts—or restarts—open YouTube Live Control Room and confirm the broadcast is receiving a signal and appears as expected. A running service only establishes that systemd sees its process as running. If YouTube reports an encoder startup problem, its troubleshooting guidance says to obtain a stream key in Live Control Room and update the encoder. If the issue is a connection problem, YouTube advises contacting your internet service provider. YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream
Choose recovery for the failure you actually have
| Approach | Failure it addresses | Boundary |
|---|---|---|
systemd restart policy |
FFmpeg exits or fails in a way covered by the selected policy. | Does not by itself identify every hung process or unhealthy remote stream. Restart behavior and rate limits depend on local systemd policy and configuration. systemd source, stable v208 branch |
| FFmpeg FIFO muxer recovery | Temporary output failures while FFmpeg continues processing; the FIFO muxer documentation describes continuing real-time processing and attempting recovery. | Recovery takes place inside FFmpeg; it does not replace a service manager when the process crashes. FFmpeg documentation: FIFO muxer |
| Progress watchdog | A process that stays alive but fails to make expected progress, if the watchdog checks a meaningful signal. | Requires appropriate thresholds and careful alert and restart behavior. A project-specific watchdog is an example of an approach, not proof that all silent failures can be detected. Project-specific setup and operations notes |
These approaches address different failure modes. A FIFO muxer may recover from a temporary output interruption; systemd can relaunch a process after an exit; a watchdog can target stalls if it can reliably detect them. None of the cited material establishes a comparative uptime figure or guarantees a recovery time.

Troubleshoot when the stream does not return
- The service fails to start: inspect its status and journal for FFmpeg errors, invalid paths, permission problems, or command-line issues. Confirm the configured user can read the input and access any required files.
- Restart attempts stop: check the journal and the installed systemd service documentation for start-rate limiting and restart-policy behavior. Fix the underlying failure before allowing retries to continue; a short delay is not a substitute for correcting a broken command or inaccessible input.
- FFmpeg runs, but YouTube does not show a healthy stream: check the Live Control Room and confirm the stream key and encoder configuration. For a connection issue, follow YouTube’s guidance and contact your ISP when applicable.
- The process stays active while output stalls: restart-on-exit may not trigger because FFmpeg has not exited. Consider FIFO muxer recovery for temporary output failures or a separate watchdog that checks actual progress and has deliberate thresholds.
