A disk bottleneck is one possible reason a YouTube 24/7 stream freezes on a VPS, but the title alone cannot establish the cause. Capture repeated Linux disk and CPU samples during a freeze, then line them up with encoder logs and YouTube’s stream-health indicators. Do not treat a high %iowait number by itself as proof that storage stalled the stream.
How to check disk I/O wait during a freeze
Take interval samples while the problem is happening. A cumulative figure since boot can conceal what occurred during the freeze.
- Check whether the tools are available. On a Linux VPS with the
sysstatutilities installed, runiostat -xz 2. It prints repeated extended reports by device at two-second intervals. In another terminal, runvmstat 2for a second view of processes, memory, block I/O, and CPU activity. Available flags and output can vary with the installed distribution and utility versions. - Ignore the since-boot first report for incident diagnosis. For these interval commands, use the subsequent rows to assess what is happening now. Record the timestamps and device names, and note when the freeze starts and ends.
- Identify relevant storage devices. Focus on devices serving media read by the encoder, temporary files, or logs. If the video is not being read from local storage, disk metrics may be less relevant to the stream’s playback path.
- Compare normal and incident intervals. Look for changes in
await,aqu-sz, read/write activity, and%utilon the relevant device. Invmstat, compare blocked processes (b), CPU I/O wait (wa), paging, and stolen CPU time (st). Correlate those rows with encoder progress or logs. - Check other parts of the stream path. Compare the same timestamps with encoder speed, the VPS upload path, and YouTube Live Control Room stream-health indicators. A disk explanation is stronger when several storage and process signals change together during the freeze; a single metric is not enough.
For reference, the iostat(1) manual describes extended per-device reports and the meaning of its fields. The vmstat(8) manual documents its process, memory, block I/O, and CPU reports.
What the Linux metrics can—and cannot—tell you
| Metric | What it describes | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
%iowait in iostat |
Percentage of time the CPU or CPUs were idle while the system had an outstanding disk I/O request, as defined by the sysstat manual. | Use it as context alongside device and process data, not as a direct measurement of how long the streaming task waited. The proc_stat(5) manual cautions that iowait is not reliable as a measure of a CPU waiting for I/O: a CPU does not wait for I/O to complete, and another task may be scheduled. |
await |
Average request time, in milliseconds, including time in the queue and time servicing the request. | Compare by device and over time. A rise aligned with the freeze is a clue, not proof of causation. |
aqu-sz |
Average queue length for requests issued to a device. | Look for a sustained or incident-aligned rise together with request latency and other signals. |
%util |
Percentage of time during which I/O requests were issued. | Near 100% can indicate saturation for devices that serve requests serially. It does not establish a performance limit for parallel devices such as modern SSDs. |
vmstat b and wa |
b is the number of processes blocked waiting for I/O to complete; wa is CPU time waiting for I/O. |
Timestamp these system-wide signals and correlate them with the relevant device and stream process. |
vmstat st |
Time taken by the hypervisor from the virtual machine. | A rise may point to CPU scheduling pressure as another possibility on a VPS. It does not establish that the host is oversubscribed. |
The kernel’s full caveat on iowait is in the Linux proc_stat(5) documentation. There is no universal iowait threshold in these sources that proves a YouTube stream is disk-bound.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Why a YouTube live stream can freeze even when disk I/O looks normal
A 24/7 stream depends on the encoder keeping up, a reliable upload path, and successful ingestion by YouTube. YouTube advises selecting a quality that the upload connection can sustain, testing before going live, and monitoring stream health. Its live encoder settings guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds.
Encoder speed
Compare FFmpeg progress output, or equivalent encoder telemetry, with real time. Google’s VP9 live-encoding guidance says encoding below 1x real-time speed can cause buffering and transmission breaks. That is guidance specific to live VP9 encoding—not a measurement of this VPS or a universal performance threshold for every codec. If the encoder falls behind, disk wait may not be the cause.

Bitrate and keyframes
Confirm the configured bitrate is sustainable on the VPS’s actual upload route and that the encoder uses CBR with the recommended keyframe interval. YouTube’s H.264 examples include 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 3 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps; the same guidance gives different recommendations for other resolutions, frame rates, and codecs. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees that a particular VPS can upload reliably at those rates.
Ingestion endpoint
If using RTMPS, verify the full server URL, valid endpoint or application name, and port 443 against the configured YouTube endpoint. The YouTube RTMPS guidance covers the connection requirements. Check stream-health status at the time of the incident rather than inferring ingestion trouble from the VPS’s location.

How to tell whether storage is a plausible cause
- Storage pressure is more plausible if the device supplying the media or relevant files shows incident-aligned increases in
awaitand queue length, while blocked processes orwaalso rise. Corroboration from the encoder log strengthens the case. - Storage is not established if only
%iowaitis high, or if the media is not being read from that device. Iowait is not a per-process wait-time measurement. - Investigate competing causes if encoder speed drops below real time, upload bitrate fluctuates, YouTube reports a stream-health issue, or
strises. These point to other parts of the pipeline that can produce a similar symptom. - Escalate with evidence if local samples do not explain the incident. Send the VPS provider timestamps, device-level samples, relevant encoder logs, and stream-health observations, and ask whether host-side storage contention or throttling occurred. This is a diagnostic next step, not evidence that a specific provider or Mumbai region caused the freeze.
The title does not identify the VPS provider, storage type, encoder, media location, or any captured metrics. Without those details, it is not possible to say whether this particular stream has high I/O wait or whether Mumbai is relevant to the fault.
