For a 24/7 YouTube stream that is already encoded and only needs to be relayed, start with a Google Compute Engine e2-standard-2 VM in Mumbai or Delhi, then test it with the actual continuous workload. It has 2 vCPUs and 8 GB of memory. If the VM must capture, decode, compose, or encode video in real time, there is no universal size to recommend: benchmark the exact video pipeline before relying on it around the clock.
The key distinction is whether your machine forwards an already-encoded stream or does video production and encoding itself. YouTube’s bitrate recommendations help plan the stream settings and network path; they are not VM performance benchmarks.
Which VM size should you choose?
For a prepared stream that the VM only relays
Start with e2-standard-2. Google classifies E2 as a cost-optimized general-purpose machine family, and this size provides 2 vCPUs and 8 GB of memory. That is a conservative starting point for a relay process, not a guarantee that every application or configuration will run reliably. Validate CPU and memory use, and confirm stream continuity under the same conditions you expect in production. Google’s E2 machine documentation lists the family specifications.
For real-time encoding or production
Do not assume e2-standard-2 can encode a particular video format in real time. The required capacity depends on codec, resolution, frame rate, encoder settings, overlays, capture, and other processes on the VM. Test the exact setup and monitor CPU headroom and stream health; increase CPU capacity if the encoder cannot sustain real time.

YouTube describes live workflows that may include gameplay, overlays, preamps, microphones, and cameras. These production tasks can materially change the workload. YouTube also transcodes incoming live streams into multiple formats for viewers, but that downstream processing does not eliminate your own capture, composition, or upstream encoding work. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and recommendations.
Why not start with a tiny shared-core VM?
Shared-core E2 sizes can be misleading if you compare only the number of vCPUs shown to the guest. Google specifies that e2-small sustains 0.5 vCPU and e2-medium sustains 1 vCPU, although each guest sees two vCPUs. They may work for a light relay, but are less conservative starting points for a continuously active stream process. Choose one only after observing the actual workload. Google’s E2 documentation explains the shared-core configurations.

Choose a region in India
Google lists E2 availability in both Mumbai (asia-south1) and Delhi (asia-south2). Either is a valid location to evaluate for this machine family; the region listing does not establish which will deliver the best latency or reliability for your channel. Compare them based on where your stream source and operators are, measured latency, availability, and the current estimate for your configuration. Check Google Cloud’s regions and zones documentation for current availability.

| 1080p at 30 fps | 5–14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6–17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s encoder settings, not Compute Engine size recommendations or independent performance test results. The full table varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate; select the intended output before estimating bandwidth. Consult YouTube’s current live encoder settings for the applicable combination.
YouTube Help advises: “Have enough bandwidth: The total bitrate that you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available. Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” Treat the 20% as headroom on the available upload bandwidth above the stream’s total bitrate, and test the path for sustained stability. YouTube warns that a connection disruption could break the stream. The streaming-tips guidance is available at YouTube Help.

Estimate the full Google Cloud cost
Do not treat the VM’s hourly rate as the complete 24/7 bill. Google presents machine prices by region and consumption model and directs users to its Pricing Calculator for estimates. Configure the actual region and billable resources, including continuous VM runtime, boot disk, network use, and any other attached resources. Rates and currency conversion can change, so use a current estimate for your choices rather than relying on a single all-in INR figure. Start with Google Cloud’s Compute Engine pricing page and its linked calculator.

The exact steps depend on your relay or encoding software, so first confirm that it can run unattended on the chosen VM and that you have a stable, already-encoded input if you are using a relay. YouTube’s documented live encoder settings provide the output parameters; your software’s configuration determines how to enter them.

- Pick the workload and size. For forwarding an encoded feed, begin with e2-standard-2. For capture or software encoding, benchmark the exact pipeline and size the VM to its measured real-time performance.
- Create the VM in Mumbai or Delhi. Choose
asia-south1orasia-south2based on measured latency and your operating setup. Check current E2 availability before deployment. - Configure the stream output. Set the codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate in your relay or encoder software. For H.264, use YouTube’s published range for the intended output, then ensure upload capacity exceeds total stream bitrate with YouTube’s recommended 20% room.
- Connect the YouTube stream key. In the YouTube live setup, obtain the stream key for the broadcast and enter it in the software’s stream destination settings. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or expose it in logs or screenshots, and reset it if it is disclosed.
- Run a sustained validation before depending on it. Watch the encoder or relay’s CPU and memory use, output status, and YouTube’s stream health while the VM runs the real workload. Confirm it continues without dropped output before treating it as a 24/7 service.
- Review the billable configuration. Estimate continuous runtime, disk, network, and attached resources in the current Google Cloud calculator for the selected region.
Common sizing and stream failures
- The stream stalls during encoding: The workload may exceed available CPU, particularly with software encoding, high frame rates, overlays, or capture. Test the exact settings, check CPU headroom, and increase capacity or reduce the encoding workload if it cannot keep pace.
- The guest shows two vCPUs but performance is insufficient: Check whether the machine is shared-core.
e2-smallsustains 0.5 vCPU ande2-mediumsustains 1 vCPU; do not size by guest-visible vCPU count alone. - YouTube reports an unstable stream: Compare total outgoing bitrate with sustained upload bandwidth, leaving the recommended 20% headroom. A brief network disruption may break the stream even when the VM has sufficient CPU.
- The selected bitrate does not match the output: Use YouTube’s recommendation for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than applying one bitrate to every stream.
- The bill is higher than the VM estimate: Recheck the region and consumption model, then account for runtime, boot disk, network use, and other attached resources in the calculator.
