Before you go live, test the picture and audio and make sure you have the rights to use the media.
Choose the right way to share
Most streaming studios let you share an entire screen, one application window, or a browser tab. Pick the narrowest source that shows the intended material: a presentation window for slides, a tab for a webpage, or a video-sharing feature for a clip. Sharing less of your desktop also reduces the chance that viewers see unrelated windows or private information.

Share slides, images, or a website
- Open the presentation, image, or website before going live.
- In your studio, open the present or share control and choose the application window or browser tab containing the material.
- Add the share to the live layout and check the audience view. Make sure the content is legible and not obscured by studio elements.
- Advance slides or navigate the page while monitoring the stream preview.
A second monitor is optional, but StreamYard says screen sharing works best with two monitors. It lets you keep the studio controls visible while presenting; it is not a requirement.
Share browser media with audio in StreamYard
- Open the media in a Chrome tab. StreamYard’s screen-sharing audio support is limited to Chrome tabs.
- In the studio, select Present → Share screen → Chrome tab.
- Choose the tab playing the media and check Share audio in the browser’s share dialog.
- Add the tab to the live layout, start playback, and listen to the studio preview. Adjust the shared-audio volume in the studio if needed.
- If you plan to speak over the clip, test both sources together and balance them so neither masks the other.
These steps describe StreamYard’s controls. Other studios and operating systems may use different audio-routing options. StreamYard does not support screen sharing on mobile devices.

Play a local video file in StreamYard
Use StreamYard’s video-sharing feature when available; its guidance recommends this because screen sharing is not optimized for video playback. As a fallback, StreamYard describes opening a new Chrome tab, dragging the local video into that tab, then sharing the tab with audio enabled. Test the result before the broadcast, since this is a workaround rather than the preferred video method.
Check media rights and destination rules
Only include material you own, have permission to use, or have verified is licensed for the live broadcast and any archive. A license does not necessarily stop an automated interruption: YouTube says live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, and a match can trigger a warning, placeholder image, interruption, or termination. YouTube also says that a licensed channel may need to be allowlisted by the rights holder through Content ID to avoid interruption.

Check the destination platform’s current rules before you share music, game footage, film, or another creator’s broadcast. Permission for one use does not automatically establish permission for every platform or for an archived replay.
Run a pre-live check
- Confirm the correct window, tab, or video appears in the live layout.
- Play a short section and verify the audience can hear it.
- Check shared-media volume and microphone volume together.
- Confirm text and important details are visible at the stream’s viewing size.
- Close or hide unrelated tabs and windows.
- Verify rights and destination-platform requirements for both the live stream and replay.
When to use a browser studio or OBS
A browser studio such as StreamYard offers explicit share controls and, according to its onboarding guidance, guest sharing as well as options such as direct slide uploads and pre-recorded streaming. It can suit a presenter who wants to share a tab or invite a guest to share.

OBS is a free, open-source desktop alternative with a configurable workflow. The exact capture and audio setup depends on your operating system and what you want to capture, so follow the current OBS documentation for your system rather than assuming one set of steps applies everywhere.
