VLC can play playlist items one after another and keep its documented HTTP broadcast from stopping at each file boundary. That does not, by itself, make a verified 4K 60fps YouTube Live stream: VLC’s documented playlist output is HTTP/MPEG-TS, while YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies RTMP or RTMPS. Treat the VLC playlist and YouTube ingest as separate parts until you confirm your chosen VLC build and encoder path work together. “Seamless” should mean tested transitions, not a guarantee of zero-gap playback.
What VLC’s playlist method does—and does not—guarantee
VideoLAN’s VLM playlist example broadcasts multiple inputs successively on one channel. When one item ends, VLM starts the next; the example uses sout-keep to keep the outgoing stream from breaking at an item boundary. It configures HTTP output with MPEG-TS and a one-second file cache. This documents sequential local streaming, not a measured gap-free transition at YouTube.
The example’s receiving client connects to the sender’s address, port and path, such as http://192.168.0.101:8090/stream. VideoLAN describes HTTP streaming as a pull protocol: a client requests the stream from the publishing device. It is not YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS ingest address. Create a local sequential playlist broadcast with VLM
This is the documented VLC-side pattern. Replace the sample media paths with files VLC can read. The output shown is a local HTTP/MPEG-TS broadcast for a receiving client on your network; it is not a YouTube destination configuration.

Do not assume paths, codecs or output options are interchangeable across builds. VideoLAN’s example is at VLM Example: Broadcast A Playlist.

Start VLC with the configuration from a terminal in the directory containing the file:
vlc --vlm-conf=playlist.vlm. If VLC cannot find a media file, check that its path is valid and readable by the account running VLC. -
On a device able to reach the VLC host over the local network, open the sender address and configured port/path in a VLC client, for example

Play through every item and watch the file boundaries. Check both picture and audio:
sout-keepis documented to keep streaming from breaking when an item ends, but it is not a promise of perfect audio continuity or a zero-frame gap.
GUI alternative for a local stream
VLC also provides a graphical streaming route through Media > Stream: select media, choose an output destination such as HTTP, and select a transcoding profile as needed. This can create a local stream, but VideoLAN’s GUI guidance does not establish a tested YouTube destination for a VLM playlist. See VideoLAN’s tips and tricks.
Why the local VLC example is not an end-to-end YouTube recipe
YouTube’s encoder setup has you take the stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room and enter them in a compatible encoder’s stream settings. The key is a credential—effectively the stream’s password and address—so do not publish or share it. YouTube describes choosing or creating keys and changing stream options in Live Control Room in its live stream settings guide and encoder setup guidance.
The official VLC playlist example sends HTTP/MPEG-TS; YouTube’s published encoder guidance calls for RTMP or RTMPS ingest. The documentation does not show how to enter YouTube’s RTMPS URL and key into current VLC while preserving the VLM playlist, nor confirm that the local HTTP output is accepted as YouTube ingest. Do not paste YouTube’s stream key into the sample HTTP destination or treat the LAN URL as an ingest URL.

If you need YouTube ingest, use a compatible encoder or relay between a VLC playlist source and YouTube only after verifying that exact workflow with your VLC build and destination settings. That is a possible workflow design, not a VideoLAN-documented, validated recipe. Confirm the complete path rather than assuming that successful playback from a LAN client proves YouTube compatibility.
Set YouTube’s 4K/60fps encoder parameters
YouTube’s current live encoder guidance lists these targets for 2160p (4K) at 60fps. They are ingest recommendations and minimums, not a guarantee that a particular connection or computer can sustain them.

These figures are YouTube’s published guidance, accessed in 2026. Consult its encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions for the current table and other resolutions.
- Ingest protocol: RTMP or RTMPS.
- Frame rate: up to 60fps.
- Rate control: constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Video codecs: H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1.
- Audio codecs: AAC or MP3.
- Latency: 4K does not have low-latency optimization; YouTube sets 4K streams to normal latency.
VLC’s separate stream-output and transcoding documentation describes configurable pipelines, codecs and frame rates, but its examples do not specify a YouTube-ready 4K/60 RTMPS output. Do not assume that choosing an output container or a transcoding profile alone meets the settings above. See VideoLAN’s stream-output examples and transcoding guidance.

Test transitions and stream health before going public

In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream and copy its stream URL and key into the settings of the compatible encoder you are actually using. Keep the key private.

Run a private or otherwise appropriate test using the same playlist, resolution, frame rate, codecs, bitrate and ingest route planned for the broadcast.

Include representative motion and audio. YouTube recommends testing representative content; static test clips alone may not reveal problems with movement or sound.

Let the playlist cross every file boundary, including the first-to-second and last-to-first boundary if you intend to repeat it. Check for black frames, pauses, audio cuts, out-of-sync audio and unexpected changes in resolution or frame rate.

Monitor YouTube’s stream health and verify that the encoder can sustain the configured bitrate over time. A nominal internet speed test does not prove a stable upload at the target bitrate.

If any transition or health issue appears, isolate whether it occurs in VLC’s local output, the relay/encoder, the network, or YouTube ingest before scheduling a public stream.
YouTube’s encoder guide recommends monitoring stream health during the event. The local VLC example and YouTube’s ingest guidance do not establish one verified direct-VLC configuration with reliable 4K/60 transitions, so end-to-end testing is essential.
