If OBS started reporting “Encoding overloaded” after a Windows graphics-driver update, treat the driver as a suspect—not a proven cause. First save a log from the affected session and check OBS Statistics to distinguish skipped frames due to encoding lag from rendering lag or network-dropped frames. Then reduce GPU contention, test relevant Windows settings, and consider rolling back the driver if the timing and available options support that test.
What “Encoding overloaded” means—and what it does not
The warning means OBS is not completing encoding work on time. It does not identify the graphics driver as the cause. GPU contention, demanding scenes, settings that exceed available resources, or an encoder/driver problem can all be relevant. OBS also uses the GPU to render and composite scenes even when encoding is assigned to the CPU. Its encoding performance troubleshooting guide discusses GPU overload and resource constraints.
A graphics-driver update immediately before the first failure makes the update a reasonable hypothesis, but timing alone does not establish causation. There is no established prevalence or success rate for this specific warning following driver updates; an OBS log and repeatable tests are needed to narrow down an individual case.
Capture a useful baseline before changing settings
- Reproduce the problem if practical, then save the OBS log for that session. Record the OBS version, Windows version and build, GPU model, graphics-driver version and date, selected encoder, output resolution and frame rate, and whether the driver arrived through Windows Update or the GPU/computer maker.
- Open View → Stats in OBS while streaming or reproducing the issue. Note rendering lag, skipped frames due to encoding lag, and network dropped frames. These measure different problems.
- Change one setting at a time and compare the same statistics under comparable conditions. Save another log after each meaningful test.
If you need help interpreting a log, share the log from the affected session rather than only a screenshot of the warning. Without the system details and log, the exact failing driver or bottleneck cannot be identified.

Check whether the problem is encoding, rendering, or the connection
Skipped frames due to encoding lag
This points to OBS missing encoding deadlines. Reduce workload or investigate the encoder and its driver support. A faster network connection does not fix encoding lag.
Rendering lag
Rendering lag means OBS is struggling to render or composite frames, often because the GPU is busy. A game using all available GPU capacity can leave too little headroom for OBS, even if encoding itself is handled elsewhere.
Network dropped frames
Network-dropped frames indicate an unstable connection or an inability to sustain the configured bitrate, not the same issue as encoding or rendering lag. Follow OBS’s separate stream connection troubleshooting guidance for that branch; changing graphics drivers or buying a capture card is not a direct fix for a connection fault.

Reduce GPU contention with reversible changes
Try these low-disruption checks first, testing after each change. OBS recommends these measures for performance problems:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Run OBS as administrator: close OBS, right-click its shortcut, select Run as administrator, and reproduce the same workload.
- Close other GPU-heavy programs: close only applications you recognize and do not need during the test, such as another game or GPU-intensive app.
- Limit game frame rate: cap the game at or below the monitor refresh rate, or enable V-Sync, then check whether rendering or encoding lag changes.
- Lower game graphics settings: reduce demanding settings if the game is saturating the GPU.
- Simplify the OBS scene: temporarily disable nonessential browser sources, filters, or other demanding scene elements to identify whether scene workload is contributing.
These are diagnostic as well as practical changes: if one reliably reduces the relevant lag, it points toward contention or workload rather than proving that the driver update was the sole cause.
Lower OBS output load only if needed
If the contention checks are not enough, test a lower output frame rate or resolution. For example, compare 30 FPS with 60 FPS under the same game and scene conditions. Keep the setting that meets the stream’s needs while avoiding repeated encoding lag; the trade-off is lower motion smoothness or image detail.

Reducing the base canvas resolution is a more disruptive option because it changes the scene’s working dimensions. Try output resolution or FPS adjustments first, and record the original values so you can restore them. OBS’s troubleshooting guide covers reducing output load and other performance measures.
Test a driver rollback if the timing fits
For Windows 10 or 11, Microsoft documents rolling back a display adapter driver through Device Manager. Treat rollback as a test of the driver hypothesis, not proof: compare OBS statistics and stability before and after under the same workload.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, right-click the affected adapter, and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and choose Roll Back Driver.
- Follow the prompts and restart if Windows requests it, then retest OBS with the same scene and output settings.
Rollback requires administrator permissions and may be unavailable if Windows no longer has a previous driver installed. If the button is unavailable, consult the official support channel for the GPU or computer maker for a compatible driver rather than installing an arbitrary package. See Microsoft’s Device Manager driver instructions.

Test HAGS and GPU assignment when relevant
Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling
OBS identifies Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling (HAGS) as a possible source of performance issues and hardware-encoder failures—not a universal cause. If the symptom persists, record your baseline, turn HAGS off in Windows Graphics settings, restart Windows, and repeat the same test. Compare the OBS statistics and restore the setting if the test does not help. Details are in OBS’s HAGS guidance.
Laptops and multi-GPU systems
If the computer has integrated and discrete GPUs, check which GPU Windows assigns to OBS in Windows Settings → System → Display → Graphics. The appropriate assignment can depend on whether you use game/window capture or display capture; do not apply a laptop-specific capture setup to every desktop. Follow OBS’s GPU Selection Guide for the capture type in use.

OBS documents hardware-encoder support for NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, and Intel Quick Sync, depending on the available hardware and driver. Hardware encoding can move work away from the CPU, but it is not automatically the best choice for every system: compatibility, GPU workload, driver condition, and encoder generation matter. Compare the currently selected encoder with a compatible alternative only after recording a baseline, and judge by stream stability and OBS statistics rather than assuming a switch will fix the warning. OBS’s hardware encoding overview describes supported options.

Common failure patterns and what to try next
| What you observe | What it suggests | Next test |
|---|---|---|
| Only rendering lag rises while a game is running | GPU contention is plausible. | Limit the game’s frame rate, lower game graphics settings, and close other GPU-heavy apps. |
| Skipped frames due to encoding lag rise after a driver update | Encoding deadlines are being missed; the update is a suspect, not a diagnosis. | Save the session log, reduce OBS workload, then test rollback if available. |
| Device Manager has no Roll Back Driver option | A previous driver may not be available to Windows. | Use the GPU or computer maker’s official support channel for a compatible driver. |
| Performance changes after disabling HAGS and rebooting | HAGS may be relevant on this system. | Repeat the same workload and compare logs; do not treat one run as a universal result. |
| Network dropped frames rise instead | The connection or configured bitrate is the relevant branch. | Use OBS’s stream-connection troubleshooting guidance rather than focusing on encoding settings. |
| The warning persists across reversible tests | The available information may not isolate the cause. | Keep the affected-session log and system/driver details for OBS or device-maker support. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Does “encoding overloaded” mean my internet connection is too slow?
Not necessarily. Check OBS Statistics: network dropped frames are a separate connection issue from encoding lag.
Can I roll back a Windows display driver if the button is missing?
No—not through that Device Manager option if it is unavailable. Check the GPU or computer maker’s official support channel for a compatible driver.
