YouTube Stream Stops After an OBS Update? Check Output Settings and Plugins

A stream failing after an OBS update may be a plugin, key, encoder, or network issue. Use this step-by-step process to isolate the cause without changing everything at once.

If your YouTube stream stopped working after an OBS Studio update, first identify what failed: OBS may crash, OBS may lose its connection or drop frames, or YouTube may reject the stream. The timing alone does not prove the update caused the problem. Preserve your current settings, note the exact error, and test one change at a time—starting with OBS Safe Mode to check whether a third-party plugin or script is involved.

First identify what “stops” means

Before changing settings, record the OBS version, operating system, update date, and the point at which the stream fails. Check both OBS and YouTube’s Live Control Room: one may show a different part of the problem.

  • OBS crashes or will not open: investigate startup errors and third-party components.
  • OBS stays open but disconnects or drops frames: investigate the connection to YouTube’s ingest server and whether your upload can sustain the configured bitrate.
  • OBS reports a connection or authentication failure, or YouTube does not receive a stream: check the selected service, stream URL, and current stream key.
  • The stream starts but looks or sounds wrong: check encoder errors, CPU load, and the local encoded output before changing unrelated settings.

Keep your existing profile and settings intact while troubleshooting. OBS recommends testing ahead of an event and including a log when seeking support; a failure that follows an update is not, by itself, proof the update caused it. OBS Studio Overview Guide

Test OBS without third-party components

OBS Safe Mode is a useful, reversible isolation test. It disables third-party plugins, scripts, and WebSockets for that launch. If the failure changes or disappears in Safe Mode, a third-party component may be involved; that result narrows the investigation but does not identify a specific plugin by itself.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Save your work and close OBS.
  2. Launch OBS with the --safe-mode parameter. OBS documents this launch option and its behavior in the Launch Parameters guide.
  3. Reproduce the same action that caused the failure, such as starting the stream or opening a scene.
  4. If the symptom changes, return to a normal launch and re-enable or check third-party components selectively. Confirm compatibility information for your operating system, CPU architecture, and installed OBS version before updating or removing a component. OBS documents that plugin compatibility can vary across those factors in its Plugins Guide.

For Windows users, plugin handling is version-sensitive: OBS’s page dated 2026-09-21 says new plugin handling begins with OBS Studio 33.0, flags legacy plugins, and says the Program Files legacy location will not load in OBS Studio 34.0 onwards. Check the page against your installed version rather than applying its Windows paths to other operating systems. Legacy Plugin Locations

Check the YouTube service, stream URL, and key

If OBS reports a start, connection, or authentication failure, verify that it is configured for the intended YouTube service and protocol, and that its stream URL and key match the current stream setup. YouTube describes the URL and key in its live stream settings guidance.

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and copy the stream key for the stream you intend to start.
  2. In OBS, check the selected YouTube service/protocol and server URL, then enter the matching key in the stream settings.
  3. If you reset the key in YouTube, update the key in OBS too. A reset key will not match the old value still saved in the encoder.
  4. Try starting again and note the exact status or error shown by YouTube and OBS.

Treat the stream key like a password: do not include it in a public log, screenshot, or support post. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide also recommends copying the key from Live Control Room into a third-party encoder when a stream will not start.

Verify output settings against the stream you are sending

Check OBS’s output mode, encoder, bitrate, resolution, and frame rate. In Advanced output mode, OBS provides independent stream and recording controls, so confirm you are inspecting the streaming settings rather than only the recording settings. There is no single bitrate that fits every YouTube stream: the appropriate value depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate, as well as the stable upload capacity available to the encoder.

YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, recommends CBR, and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval that does not exceed 4 seconds. Use YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution table for the complete codec- and frame-rate-specific values.

YouTube H.264 example Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate Context
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps One row in YouTube’s current encoder table; not a universal setting.
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps One row in YouTube’s current encoder table; not a universal setting.

These figures apply to the specified H.264 resolution and frame rate. If your connection cannot sustain the selected bitrate, a nominally recommended setting may still produce an unstable stream. Match OBS to the current YouTube table and to upload capacity that remains stable during the stream.

Check encoder and computer health

If OBS connects but YouTube playback is poor—or OBS reports an encoder error—look for evidence of an encoding problem before changing network settings. YouTube advises checking the stream’s appearance and sound in the encoder, reviewing encoder errors and CPU load, and checking a local archive when one is available. If the local encoded output looks healthy but delivery to YouTube does not, test the outbound internet connection. YouTube’s troubleshooting steps

What the symptoms point toward

  • Encoder errors or high CPU load: focus on the encoder and machine health; do not assume a new computer is needed without evidence.
  • Local output is sound, but YouTube’s stream is not: investigate delivery to the ingest server and stream health.
  • Only one scene, script, or plugin triggers the problem: isolate that component and check its compatibility with your OBS version and platform.

Troubleshoot dropped frames and intermittent connections

OBS defines dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote ingest server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. OBS says dropped frames are extremely unlikely to be caused by OBS itself, so investigate the connection when this is the reported symptom rather than reinstalling plugins at random. 1. Check bitrate against stable upload capacity. Lower the video bitrate if the connection cannot reliably sustain the current setting, then check whether the drops improve.
  2. Try another ingest server. If OBS offers another suitable server, test it and compare the result.
  3. Test without network-altering software. VPNs, security software, and network-optimization software can be relevant to a connection test; change one factor at a time.
  4. Check network drivers and the connection path. If Wi-Fi instability is plausible, test wired Ethernet. A cable can help diagnose an unstable wireless link, but it cannot fix a plugin incompatibility, incorrect stream key, or wrong output settings.
  5. Retest and record the result. Keep a note of the setting or component changed and whether the same failure returns.

Retest before relying on the stream

Once the specific suspected cause has been addressed, test in a private or unlisted stream, or use a scheduled test before an important broadcast. YouTube recommends testing with audio and motion similar to the real event and monitoring stream health. Record the settings and component state that worked so you can tell whether a later change brings the problem back.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube live stream rather than repair an OBS encoder setup, StreamNeo is the cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays your uploads at the quality you made them, up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
