If your YouTube live stream’s bitrate keeps dropping on ACT Fibernet, first check the encoder settings and local computer, then compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet and measure upload performance while the problem is happening. An ACT connection alone does not show that ACT caused a drop: repeatable tests are needed to distinguish an encoder or home-network issue from an outbound connection problem.
Check YouTube’s stream-health message and encoder settings
Start with the warning YouTube displays in Live Control Room and confirm that your encoder is using the intended resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate. YouTube’s recommended figures vary by ingest codec, resolution and frame rate; do not apply an H.264 target to an AV1 or H.265/HEVC stream. For H.264, YouTube currently recommends these example targets:

These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not measurements of ACT’s network or guarantees of a stable stream. Use YouTube’s full current live encoder settings table for other resolutions and codecs. YouTube recommends CBR (constant bitrate), a 2-second keyframe interval (with a maximum of 4 seconds), and RTMPS, the encrypted version of RTMP. The settings page also describes supported ingest requirements.
A speed test and an encoder target answer different questions. The target is what your encoder attempts to send; the test estimates available upload capacity at a particular time. YouTube warns that an incorrect configuration or insufficient bandwidth for the chosen resolution can impair delivery. If the connection cannot sustain the target, try a lower resolution or frame rate and use the corresponding target from YouTube’s table.

Separate an encoder problem from an outbound connection problem
Inspect the encoder and source
Watch the encoder preview and check its error indicators and the computer’s CPU load while streaming. If possible, make a local recording using the same source and settings. Poor picture or sound in the preview or recording, encoder errors, or a heavily loaded computer point toward the source or encoding path rather than proving a network fault. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance recommends checking source quality, encoder errors and CPU load.
Compare local output with YouTube’s stream health
If the encoder preview and local recording look and sound right but YouTube reports delivery problems, shift attention to the outbound connection. That observation narrows the search; it does not identify whether the cause is Wi-Fi, other household traffic, the router, or the ISP path. Keep the encoder settings fixed while comparing tests so you do not change two variables at once.

Measure upload capacity with headroom
Run upload tests during the times the stream drops, rather than relying on a download result or a single best-case speed test. YouTube notes that download speed is often higher than upload speed and recommends leaving 20% of upload capacity unused. Its guidance states: “The total bitrate that you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available.” See YouTube’s streaming tips and encoder guidance.
Allow for the full outbound load: video and audio, any backup stream, and other people or devices using the connection. YouTube specifically warns that shared-network activity and connectivity disruptions can affect delivery. Record the time, upload result, connection type, encoder target and YouTube health message for each test; repeated observations are more useful than a peak result.

Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet, then repeat under controlled conditions
- Keep encoder settings constant. Note the resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate and keyframe interval, along with the exact YouTube warning.
- Test over Wi-Fi. Run an upload test and observe stream health at the time the drop occurs. Note whether other devices are active.
- Connect the streaming computer to the router by Ethernet. Use a suitable cable such as Cat5e or Cat6, then repeat the same test. ACT’s home-network guidance identifies wiring, router placement and capability, and connected-device load as factors that can affect home performance.
- Reduce competing traffic and repeat. Pause heavy uploads, downloads and other streams, then compare the results with the same encoder settings. Repeat at more than one relevant time if possible.
If Ethernet improves the result, the Wi-Fi segment or conditions around it deserve attention. Router placement, capability, age and device load can be relevant. If the problem persists on Ethernet, that still does not by itself prove an ACT-side fault; it rules out less than a network-side investigation would.
When and how to contact ACT support
Escalate if repeated upload tests remain unstable over Ethernet with competing traffic paused, especially when YouTube stream-health warnings coincide with the problem. Share evidence rather than attributing the cause in advance:

- Dates and times of the drops and tests.
- Whether the computer was on Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and whether other household traffic was paused.
- Upload test results and the encoder’s resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate.
- The exact YouTube stream-health message, plus whether other internet services were affected.
