In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. While the PC is plugged in, set Make my device sleep after to Never or to a duration longer than the planned broadcast. Screen-off is a separate timer: the display can turn off while the PC stays awake.
Keep Windows 11 awake while the stream runs
- Plug in the PC. For a long broadcast, use the plugged-in power settings rather than relying on battery behavior.
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. Microsoft documents this path in its Windows power and sleep guidance.
- Under the plugged-in options, set Make my device sleep after to Never, or choose a timeout that outlasts the broadcast. If you choose a duration, allow extra time for setup and any delays before ending the stream.
- Set Turn my screen off after independently. You may let the display turn off to save power while keeping the PC awake; turning off the screen alone does not put Windows to sleep.
These labels and available controls can vary by Windows release, hardware, and organization management policy. If a work- or school-managed PC does not offer the setting, its administrator may control it.
Check the laptop lid setting separately
On a laptop, changing the sleep timeout may not be enough if closing the lid triggers a separate action. Check what happens When I close the lid while plugged in, and choose a behavior that does not put the PC to sleep if the stream must continue with the lid closed. Microsoft documents lid and power-button actions separately in its sleep guidance. Before operating a closed-lid laptop for a long session, check the manufacturer’s cooling and operating advice; some designs need airflow around the keyboard or chassis.
Windows 10: use the legacy Power Options route
For Windows 10, Microsoft documents the route Settings > System > Power & sleep > Additional power settings. In Power Options, adjust the active plan’s sleep timeout and review the lid-close action on a laptop. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft’s power-mode information, so treat these steps as a legacy route rather than an indication of current general support.

Confirm that the loop and YouTube encoder are configured correctly
A PC that stays awake does not automatically make a video repeat or keep a broadcast connected. Configure the player or encoder you actually use to loop the source; there is no single application workflow here because the looping app is not specified. Then check the encoder’s stream URL and stream key in YouTube’s setup flow. YouTube describes a stream key as a password and address for the encoder, so keep it private. Its live-stream setup guidance recommends preparing and testing the encoder, checking the preview, and confirming the event is accessible.
YouTube’s 4K/2160p at 60 fps encoder targets
Use the bitrate row for the codec selected in the encoder. YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance lists these ingestion bitrates:

These are YouTube’s recommended encoder ingest bitrates, not a promise that a particular home internet plan can sustain them. Upload capacity, stability, and other traffic matter; YouTube advises choosing a quality your connection can reliably deliver. Follow its guidance for RTMP/RTMPS, supported video codecs (H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1), constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). For 4K, the cited guidance does not offer low latency; YouTube optimizes these streams for quality and uses normal latency. YouTube transcodes live streams into different output formats for viewers’ devices and networks.
Make a test stream with similar motion and audio before the public run. YouTube explicitly advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Check the stream preview and health indicators during the broadcast, rather than assuming that the Windows power setting guarantees delivery.

If the stream stops even though the PC stayed awake
- The display went dark: Check whether Windows is still awake and whether the encoder is still sending. A screen-off timeout is independent of the sleep timeout.
- The laptop slept after the lid closed: Review the plugged-in lid-close action, then test again with the intended lid position.
- The loop ended or froze: Check the chosen player or encoder’s repeat setting and whether the source file completed or encountered an error. Loop controls are application-specific.
- YouTube reports poor stream health or disconnects: Compare the encoder’s codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, CBR setting, and keyframe interval with YouTube’s guidance. Check upload stability and other network use; a suitable sleep setting cannot repair an unstable connection.
- The stream key or URL is wrong: Recheck the YouTube event’s stream URL and key in the encoder. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the encoder.
- The setting is missing or resets: Check for organization policy restrictions and power-plan controls. On a managed machine, ask the administrator rather than trying to bypass policy.
- The PC shuts down or the encoder crashes: Sleep prevention does not protect against power loss, overheating, software failure, or other interruptions. Check system and encoder status separately and test the complete setup before relying on a long run.
