Set YouTube Live encoder settings before going live
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS and H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1, up to 60 fps. It recommends RTMPS where supported because it encrypts the stream through SSL. For a straightforward SDR H.264 setup, use YouTube’s recommendations as a starting point, then test whether your upload connection can sustain the selected quality.

Keyframes, audio, and SDR color
- Rate control: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval where the encoder exposes that setting; do not exceed four seconds.
- SDR color: YouTube’s recommended advanced settings include Rec. 709, 8-bit color, square pixels, and progressive scan.
- Audio: For stereo, YouTube lists 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps as recommended settings.
Encoder labels can vary, so confirm the result in the current OBS interface or your FFmpeg configuration rather than relying on an old screenshot or copied preset. YouTube’s current live encoder guidance is the reference for these recommendations.
How to prepare and run the showcase
- Prepare the YouTube broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room, create or select the broadcast, and get its stream key. Keep the key private: anyone who has it may be able to send video to your broadcast. Follow the current YouTube Live Control Room prompts; older guides may show interface steps or account requirements that have changed.
- Choose the production workflow. In OBS, set up scenes for the game or product footage, overlays, and any transitions you need. For FFmpeg, validate the exact input, looping behavior, output codec, and ingest settings against current FFmpeg and YouTube documentation. Do not paste an unverified command into a 24/7 production workflow.
- Configure the encoder. Select RTMPS if supported, then set the resolution, frame rate, CBR, bitrate, and two-second keyframe interval. Match the audio and SDR settings to YouTube’s recommendations where available.
- Run a representative test. Before the public show, test with movement and audio similar to the actual showcase. Check both the picture and sound, and verify that your network can sustain the bitrate without interruptions.
- Start the encoder and inspect stream health. Watch YouTube’s Live Control Room messages and stream-health indicators during the event. The Live Streaming API also exposes stream status and health values such as

Make sure someone or a monitoring process can notice a stopped encoder, failed media source, or dropped connection and take the planned recovery action. Keep a 24/7 feed recoverable and archivable
Plan for source, process, and connection failures
For a local OBS or FFmpeg setup, keep source media available locally or otherwise make it resilient to source failure. Decide who will respond if the encoder exits, the network drops, or YouTube reports a problem. Test the recovery steps before relying on them. The official guidance reviewed here does not establish seamless reconnect behavior or a specific automatic restart method for either tool, so treat recovery as something to design and verify in your own setup.

Do not rely on YouTube for one uninterrupted replay
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; if a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. A continuous 24/7 broadcast should therefore not be treated as a guaranteed single replay. If preserving the show matters, make a local recording backup and consider planned shorter broadcasts, weighing the archive benefit against interruptions to audience continuity. What affects the computer requirements?
There is no universal minimum computer specification established for every 24/7 showcase. The workload depends on resolution, frame rate, codec, scene complexity, whether encoding uses hardware or software, and whether you record locally at the same time. OBS describes H.264 as its default codec and notes its broad compatibility. OBS also says software AV1 encoding requires high-end CPUs for real-time compression, while recent hardware encoders can encode AV1. An existing suitable computer may be enough; a dedicated mini PC is an option if you want a separate local host, but choose only after specifying the actual workload. A remote server may suit a script-driven setup, but its suitability likewise depends on the encoding and media pipeline. Do not buy hardware based on a generic “24/7 streaming” minimum.
Copyright and product-showcase content
Use only video, game footage, music, logos, and other material you have the rights or permissions to stream. A product showcase can still raise copyright questions even when it is promotional or continuously looped. Check YouTube’s current policies and the permissions attached to each asset before publishing. Repeatedly streaming existing material does not itself establish that you have permission to use it.
