Keep one FFmpeg output running across clip boundaries, then choose the right stitching method for your files: use the concat demuxer when their streams are compatible and you want to avoid re-encoding, or the concat filter when you need to re-encode or normalize inputs. Neither method guarantees gap-free audio for every playlist; mismatched stream lengths, inaccurate duration metadata, timestamp problems, and YouTube ingest or connection issues can all cause trouble.
Diagnose the boundary before changing the command
First establish whether the silence occurs in the media itself, when FFmpeg joins the clips, or only after YouTube receives the stream. Listen to the source files at the exact transition, then check the FFmpeg output and a local recording of the stream. If those sound clean but the YouTube playback does not, investigate the outbound connection and ingest path instead of changing the clip join blindly. YouTube recommends testing before going live and checking outbound connection strength when encoder output is healthy (YouTube encoder settings; YouTube live-stream troubleshooting).
- If the gap is audible in a source clip, fix or replace that media first.
- If the source clips sound fine but the gap appears at each join in the encoder output or local recording, inspect durations, stream lengths, and timestamps.
- If the local recording is clean but viewers hear a gap, check YouTube Studio stream health and messages, then investigate the outbound network and ingest configuration.
There is no single cause or safe universal command for all media files. The appropriate join depends on the actual streams, their timing, and whether you can re-encode.
Inspect every clip and the playlist
Before joining files, confirm for each clip that the expected audio and video streams are present, and note their codecs, sample rates, channel layouts, time bases, and durations. Compare the reported duration with the actual playable end of both the audio and video. If one stream ends before the other, or duration metadata is inaccurate or truncated, the next clip can be placed at an unexpected timestamp.

For the concat demuxer, the files must have the same streams, including matching codecs and time bases. A playlist that mixes different stream layouts or incompatible encodings is not a good candidate for stream-copy concatenation. The FFmpeg documentation warns that timestamp adjustment is global and may cause gaps when streams do not have exactly the same length (FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation).
Choose the join method that fits your files
| Method | Use it when | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Concat demuxer | The clips have compatible streams and you want to avoid re-encoding. | It relies on duration and timestamp information; mismatched stream lengths or inaccurate durations can produce gaps. |
| Concat filter | You are re-encoding, or the inputs need processing to make their outputs consistent. | Each segment must start at timestamp zero; shorter audio streams in non-final segments may be padded with silence to match the longest stream. |
acrossfade audio filter |
You intentionally want adjacent audio to overlap smoothly. | It changes the audible transition; it does not repair incorrect timestamps or prove the source timing is sound. |
FFmpeg’s FAQ recommends the concat filter when re-encoding and the concat demuxer when the compatible-input requirements allow concatenation without re-encoding (FFmpeg FAQ).

Use the concat demuxer for compatible clips
- Create a text file such as
playlist.txtwith one entry per clip, in playback order:file 'clip-01.mp4' file 'clip-02.mp4' file 'clip-03.mp4'Use paths that resolve from the directory where FFmpeg runs. The concat demuxer reads the listed files as one input and adjusts timestamps so each file follows the calculated end of the preceding one.
- When the files meet the compatibility requirements and their duration information is accurate, run one FFmpeg process for the whole list. For a YouTube RTMP output, a stream-copy example is:
ffmpeg -re -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt -c copy -f flv "rtmp://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"Set the
YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEYenvironment variable to the key from your YouTube live control room; do not paste a real key into a public script, log, or article. This example does not convert incompatible files: if FFmpeg reports stream or muxing errors, or the input codecs are not accepted by your chosen output, do not assume-c copycan fix them. - If a file’s stored duration is wrong, check the actual end time before using the demuxer’s
durationdirective to override it in the list. The directive is for correcting a known duration, not for inserting guessed pauses or crossfades. Re-test the affected join after any correction.
Use the concat filter when re-encoding or normalizing
The concat filter is the better fit when clips need processing or you already plan to re-encode. Build a filter graph that feeds each segment’s video and audio into concat, then map its resulting video and audio outputs to the encoder. In schematic form for two inputs, the graph is [0:v:0][0:a:0][1:v:0][1:a:0]concat=n=2:v=1:a=1[v][a]; the output maps are -map '[v]' -map '[a]'. This is a graph pattern, not a complete universal command: input stream availability, dimensions, frame rate, audio layout, codecs, and target output settings must be checked for the actual files.
Ensure each segment starts at timestamp zero before it enters the concat filter. The filter uses the longest stream duration for each non-final segment and pads shorter audio streams with silence as needed. Consequently, a short audio stream can produce a silent tail before the next segment; inspect audio and video end times rather than treating this behavior as a lost audio packet. See the FFmpeg filters documentation for the concat filter’s input rules.

Add a crossfade only for an intentional blend
FFmpeg’s acrossfade filter can blend adjacent audio, with configurable duration, curves, and overlap behavior. Choose those settings to suit the content and desired transition. The documentation’s acrossfade=d=10 example is illustrative, not a universal duration. A crossfade can conceal an abrupt-sounding edit when a blend is intended, but it does not validate or repair timestamp alignment (FFmpeg filters documentation).
Match the audio configuration to YouTube ingest
For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 as audio codec options. Its current encoder guidance recommends 44.1 kHz for stereo audio and 48 kHz for 5.1 audio; the listed recommended advanced audio bitrates are 128 Kbps for stereo and 384 Kbps for 5.1 surround sound. These are platform configuration recommendations, not a fix for unequal source durations or bad timestamps. Check the YouTube encoder settings page for the full, current live output guidance.

YouTube’s live-stream error guidance calls for one audio stream and matching audio sample rates for primary and backup stream configurations. If the encoder is sending multiple audio streams or the backup differs in sample rate, correct that ingest setup; do not mistake an ingest correction for a source-file timing fix (YouTube live-stream error messages).
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test the complete playlist before going live
- Use representative clips, including the transitions most likely to cause trouble. Include the same audio and motion characteristics planned for the live stream.
- Run the full playlist through the intended FFmpeg method and listen through every boundary, not only the first join.
- Check the encoder output and local archive. Note whether a gap happens at the same boundary every time, and save relevant FFmpeg messages and timestamps.
- Preview the stream in YouTube and watch stream health and messages while testing. YouTube says to test before starting a live stream (encoder settings guidance).
- If the audio is already wrong in the encoder output or archive, investigate the media, join method, routing, encoder errors, and system load. If local output is healthy but YouTube playback is not, check outbound connectivity and the ingest path (YouTube troubleshooting guidance).
Common causes and fixes
| What you hear or see | Likely area to inspect | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| A brief gap or jump at each file boundary | Demuxer timing, inaccurate duration metadata, or audio and video streams with unequal lengths. | Compare actual stream end times with stored durations. Correct known duration errors or switch to a re-encoding workflow with the concat filter where appropriate. |
| The first clip plays, but joining fails or output is malformed | Input streams do not meet concat demuxer compatibility requirements. | Check codecs, time bases, and stream layout across all files. Normalize and re-encode using a filter workflow if needed. |
| Silence appears at a non-final segment in a concat-filter workflow | The segment’s audio is shorter than its longest stream, so the filter pads the shorter audio with silence. | Check source audio and video lengths and timestamps. Decide whether to edit the source, adjust the segment, or accept the aligned silent tail. |
| YouTube reports an audio configuration error | Audio codec, number of audio streams, or sample-rate mismatch between primary and backup. | Use an accepted RTMP/RTMPS audio codec, provide one audio stream, and match primary and backup sample rates. |
| The encoder output and archive sound right, but viewers hear gaps | Outbound connection or YouTube ingest path. | Check YouTube stream health and messages and investigate outbound connectivity rather than re-editing clips first. |
