YouTube’s “under 12 hours” rule is about automatic archiving, not a documented 12-hour maximum broadcast or automatic disconnect. If your 24/7 stream stops when an RTMP output timer expires, first check whether that timer belongs to your encoder, relay, or scheduled event. Then compare the exact stop time with your encoder log and YouTube’s stream-health status.
Does YouTube disconnect a stream at 12 hours?
YouTube’s encoder help says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That describes when YouTube automatically archives a stream; it does not say a stream is forcibly disconnected at 12 hours. The rule also does not establish what caused a particular stream to stop. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
So if an encoder reports that its “RTMP output” reached a time limit, treat that as a clue about the output configuration—not proof of a universal YouTube RTMP session cap. The responsible limit could be configured in the encoder, a relay, or a scheduled event. Without the product name, exact error, and logs, the cause cannot be identified with certainty.
Find out which part of the setup stopped the stream
- Record the elapsed time. Note when the output began and the precise time it ended. Save the encoder’s log and the stream-health status shown in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s Live Streaming API exposes stream status and health information, but it does not provide a universal error-to-fix mapping. YouTube Live Streaming API: LiveStreams.
- Identify the timer’s owner. Check the encoder’s output or session-duration settings, any relay’s duration and reconnect settings, and the event’s schedule or state. If the stream stops at the same elapsed duration on repeated attempts, that is useful evidence for locating a configured limit, but it does not by itself identify which component imposed it.
- Check whether the encoder or relay ended output first. Compare the timestamp and wording in its log with YouTube’s status. If output stopped at the source before YouTube reported a problem, investigate that source or its configured timer. If the encoder says it is still sending while YouTube reports an interruption, inspect the connection and destination configuration.
- Verify the YouTube destination. Confirm that the encoder is using the intended YouTube Live server URL and the stream key for the intended stream. YouTube’s setup instructions treat the server URL and stream key as separate fields. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Inspect delivery health. Look for warnings such as low video bitrate, a frame-rate mismatch, or missing audio. These can affect delivery or quality, but the API documentation does not say they explain every timer-related disconnection.
Check RTMPS settings if the connection times out
If your encoder connects to YouTube over RTMPS, verify the protocol and full destination details against YouTube’s documented requirements: an rtmps URL, a valid ingestion server and path, port 443, TLS, and the correct SNI hostname. A protocol mismatch is a concrete possibility: Google notes that an RTMP library may time out without a sensible response when cleartext RTMP is used with a YouTube server that expects RTMPS. - Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Do not change several connection fields at once. Compare the configured URL and protocol with the destination information supplied for your YouTube stream, then check the next connection attempt’s log. A timeout alone does not prove the protocol is wrong.
What a relay’s disconnect protection can—and cannot—do
A third-party relay may provide fallback video during a source interruption, but that is continuity protection, not proof of a fix for a YouTube RTMP duration limit. Restream documents disconnect-protection windows of 5, 15, or 30 minutes, eligibility on paid plans, and termination of destination streams if the source does not reconnect before the selected window expires. Restream Help Center: Set up stream disconnect protection.

If you use a relay, check its own output-duration setting, reconnect behavior, and logs as well as YouTube’s status. A fallback window may bridge a brief interruption, but it will not remove an underlying encoder timer or keep a destination stream running indefinitely when the source does not return.
Keep a YouTube stream running without leaving a computer on
For a YouTube channel that needs pre-recorded video to loop continuously, StreamNeo is the cloud-based option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos in the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. This is a different operating approach from diagnosing a timer in a local encoder; it does not establish the cause of an existing disconnect.

Troubleshooting by symptom
| What you see | What to check |
|---|---|
| The stream stops at the same elapsed time. | Check duration or session settings in the encoder, relay, and scheduled event. Use logs and timestamps to identify which component ends output; YouTube’s documentation does not establish a universal RTMP time limit. |
| The RTMP library times out or receives no sensible response. | Check whether the destination expects RTMPS and verify the rtmps URL, ingestion host and path, port 443, TLS, and SNI hostname against YouTube’s guidance. |
| YouTube shows a stream-health warning. | Read the specific warning and check bitrate, frame rate, and audio in the encoder. These are documented health concerns, but a warning is not automatically the cause of a timer-triggered stop. |
| The encoder appears to keep sending, but YouTube’s stream ends. | Compare encoder and YouTube timestamps, then verify the selected server URL, stream key, event state, and any relay output log. |
| A relay inserts fallback video, then ends the destination stream. | Check the relay’s configured reconnect window and whether the source returned before it expired. A fallback feature has a finite window and is not a remedy for the underlying source failure. |
What to include when asking for case-specific help
To distinguish an encoder-side limit from a connection or service issue, provide the encoder or relay name and version, the exact error text, the elapsed time before disconnect, the relevant log excerpt, whether the destination uses RTMP or RTMPS, and YouTube’s stream-health status at the time. Remove or redact your stream key before sharing logs; it grants access to your stream output.
