Best AWS Architecture for Looping Prerecorded Videos to YouTube Live with MediaPackage

MediaLive handles the S3 file loop and RTMP delivery to YouTube. MediaPackage is an optional HLS packaging path for separate playback clients.

For a single prerecorded MP4, use AWS Elemental MediaLive to ingest the file from Amazon S3, set the file input’s Source end behavior to LOOP, and send a dedicated RTMP output to YouTube Live. Add MediaPackage only if you also need a packaged HLS playback endpoint for other viewers or clients; MediaPackage is not the component that loops the file or delivers the YouTube feed.

Recommended architecture

The direct path is MP4 in S3 → MediaLive file input (Source end behavior: LOOP) → MediaLive channel → RTMP output to YouTube Live. In MediaLive, the file input loops until a scheduled next input begins. If you need a separate playback service, add another output: MediaLive HLS output → MediaPackage endpoint → playback clients or CDN.

AWS documentation supports MediaLive’s RTMP output capability, but the reviewed AWS material does not provide a YouTube-specific end-to-end recipe. Check YouTube Studio for the current ingest URL, stream key, and encoder requirements when configuring the destination; do not rely on hard-coded values from an unverified guide.

What each AWS service does

Service Role in this workflow
Amazon S3 Stores the source MP4 used by a MediaLive file input. AWS also documents S3 as an eligible location for MP4 or TS dynamic inputs. AWS: Dynamic inputs
AWS Elemental MediaLive Ingests and encodes the source, handles file-input looping and scheduled input switches, and sends configured output groups such as RTMP and HLS. AWS: Outputs
AWS Elemental MediaPackage Receives live HLS from an upstream encoder such as MediaLive and packages it for downstream playback requests. It is useful when you need that playback endpoint, not as the loop engine or YouTube destination. AWS: What is AWS Elemental MediaPackage?
Amazon CloudFront Can distribute packaged playback from MediaPackage to viewers in an AWS reference architecture. Include it for that distribution use case, not simply because the channel sends a feed to YouTube. AWS: Live Streaming on AWS architecture overview

Configure a single-file loop

  1. Put the MP4 in S3. Use a source location accessible to the MediaLive input configuration. Confirm that the selected input type supports the file and container you intend to use.
  2. Create a MediaLive file input. Point it at the S3 source. AWS documents file inputs and dynamic inputs for media such as MP4 or TS; consult the current MediaLive input documentation for the exact configuration available in your account and region. AWS: Dynamic inputs
  3. Set Source end behavior to LOOP. This repeats the file when playback reaches its end. AWS describes LOOP as continuing to repeat while waiting for a scheduled fixed or immediate next input. AWS: Setting input source end behavior
  4. Configure the MediaLive channel and RTMP output group. Make the YouTube feed a distinct RTMP destination. Select output settings that meet YouTube’s requirements as shown in the current YouTube Studio setup; the correct ingest URL and stream key are account/session-specific details to verify there.
  5. Start the channel and verify both ends. Check MediaLive input and output status, then confirm in YouTube Studio that the incoming stream is detected and healthy before making it public or scheduling the live event.

Looping one file versus rotating a playlist

One repeated file

Use LOOP when the same file should repeat. It continues until a scheduled next input starts.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

A sequence of files

For a sequence, use scheduled input switches rather than treating MediaPackage as a playlist manager. MediaLive supports scheduled switches between inputs, and AWS describes a VOD-to-live pattern where file inputs run one after another. Dynamic inputs can select different S3 or MediaStore MP4/TS files through schedule variables. AWS: Input switching

When a file should play only once

MediaLive’s CONTINUE behavior plays the file once and then uses input-loss behavior until the next input starts. Choose this when the schedule, rather than a repeated file, should govern what follows. AWS: Setting input source end behavior

When MediaPackage belongs in the design

Add MediaPackage when you need a packaged HLS endpoint for downstream playback clients. Configure a separate MediaLive HLS output to MediaPackage while retaining the RTMP output for YouTube. MediaLive channels can contain multiple output groups, which makes the split-output design appropriate when both destinations are needed. Confirm the exact output settings against the current AWS configuration and platform requirements.

If YouTube is the only destination and you do not need a separate HLS playback endpoint, the documented workflow does not require MediaPackage. Adding it introduces another service and configuration path without replacing MediaLive’s file ingest, loop, or RTMP delivery role.

Reliability and cost decisions

Do not assume the reference architecture guarantees this feed

AWS’s live-streaming reference design uses redundant feeds and processing, MediaPackage, and CloudFront. That is useful for understanding resilience in a packaged viewer-delivery system, but it does not establish automatic end-to-end redundancy for one S3 file loop sent to YouTube. Validate channel class and input constraints, and test the recovery behavior of the specific configuration you deploy. AWS: Live Streaming on AWS architecture overview

Estimate the running workflow before launch

The AWS material cited here does not establish a workload-specific price. Estimate the continuously running MediaLive channel and any additional MediaPackage or CloudFront services against your region, output configuration, bitrate ladder, and desired resiliency. The key architecture choices are whether a separate packaged endpoint is actually needed, which output formats and bitrates are required, and how much operational overhead and redundancy the channel warrants.
