If OBS stopped sending your YouTube 24/7 stream after its stream key was lost or reset, copy the current key from YouTube Studio and replace the saved value in OBS. Then confirm the server and stream settings and restart the encoder. If it still will not connect, diagnose the encoder, network, or YouTube account separately: a correct key cannot fix those problems.
Restore OBS’s connection with the current YouTube stream key
A YouTube stream key is a credential that lets an encoder send a feed to YouTube. It is not something you buy. If the key was reset or replaced, OBS must use the current key along with the correct YouTube Live server URL. YouTube says a channel owner or manager can reset a key; editors and viewers cannot.
- Copy the current key from YouTube Studio. Open YouTube Studio, select Go Live to enter Live Control Room, then open the Stream tab and copy the current stream key. If you have streamed before, YouTube may load prior stream settings, including the key, unless it has been changed or reset.
- Replace the saved key in OBS. In OBS, open Settings → Stream and paste the current YouTube key. Check that the service/server selection and YouTube stream URL are for the intended stream. YouTube’s encoder setup requires both the server URL and the stream key.
- Start the encoder and check Live Control Room. Start streaming in OBS, then confirm that the preview appears in YouTube Live Control Room. For a scheduled stream, select Go live there if that stream’s workflow requires it. Check the current stream configuration rather than assuming auto-start or auto-stop is enabled.
- Verify the public stream. Once YouTube indicates the stream is live, check the channel or watch page. Do not assume every reconnect keeps the same viewing experience or transitions without interruption; YouTube’s behavior can depend on the stream configuration.
If the new key does not reconnect OBS
Separate a key rejection from a stream that starts but drops frames or stops. Check the current Live Control Room error and metrics, then follow the branch that fits the symptom.
The key or destination is still wrong
Copy the key again from the intended stream’s Live Control Room and confirm that OBS is using that stream’s server URL and service selection. A key for another stream or an outdated saved value will not authenticate the intended feed. YouTube’s direct recommendation for third-party encoder start errors is to retrieve the stream key from Live Control Room and paste it into the encoder (YouTube: Fix live stream errors).

OBS reports an encoder or output problem
Check OBS for output errors, update the encoder, and inspect CPU load, audio and video output, and any local recording. YouTube also suggests trying another encoder if source and encoder checks do not explain poor output. A different key will not resolve an OBS encoder fault (YouTube: Troubleshoot live streaming issues).
The stream connects but drops frames or disconnects
OBS defines dropped frames as a connection that is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate; enough dropped frames can disconnect a stream. Compare the stream’s total bitrate with available outbound upload capacity. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. For a primary and backup encoder, its guidance is to allow for the primary bitrate plus the backup bitrate plus 20% (YouTube: Troubleshoot live streaming issues; YouTube: Streaming tips).

OBS lists security software, VPNs, bundled network-optimization software, and outdated network drivers as possible connection factors. Treat these as diagnostic checks, not guaranteed fixes. Reducing bitrate may help when upload capacity is insufficient, but it lowers video quality and does not repair the underlying network problem (OBS: Stream connection troubleshooting).
YouTube shows a copyright match, strike, or restriction
Copyright matches can result in a placeholder, interruption, or termination; strikes can also terminate a stream. Check YouTube Studio for strikes or restrictions. If you have licensed the material, the rights owner may still need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Replacing the key does not remove a policy restriction (YouTube: Troubleshoot live streaming issues).

Make a 24/7 stream more resilient after it is back
Keep a tested recovery path
YouTube recommends a reliable network and says to test backup-encoder failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet, then checking that the player switches to the backup. Monitor audio and video, check the stream on channel or watch pages and on mobile, and confirm that local archive files are growing. A backup that has not been tested may not help during an interruption (YouTube: Streaming tips).
Plan your own recording and retention
YouTube says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not establish that one archive will preserve a continuous 24/7 broadcast end to end. If you need a complete record, arrange local recording and retention, and plan transitions in the public stream deliberately (YouTube: Archive live streams).

Watch for a connection or policy problem, not just another key prompt
After recovery, keep an eye on the current stream’s status, encoder output, and local recording. If YouTube reports a restriction or OBS begins dropping frames, address that specific cause instead of repeatedly changing a valid key. YouTube warns, “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” (YouTube: Streaming tips)
