A high-bitrate source file does not automatically cause a YouTube 24/7 stream to buffer. The source bitrate can stress storage reads or decoding, but the stream FFmpeg sends has its own encoded bitrate and must also fit the available upload capacity. First locate where the problem occurs: FFmpeg processing, YouTube ingest, or viewer playback. Then check file pacing, processing speed, outgoing settings, and YouTube’s health messages in that order.
Find where the buffering starts
“Buffering” can describe several different symptoms in the chain from source file to viewer: source reading and decoding, filters and encoding, muxing and network output, YouTube ingest, and playback. A problem at one point does not prove another point is at fault.
- FFmpeg stalls or falls behind: inspect its progress output and determine whether it is reading, decoding, filtering, or encoding too slowly to sustain the intended media clock.
- YouTube reports an ingest or stream-health error: record the exact message and timestamp in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health and its messages during the event.
- Only some viewers report buffering while ingest appears healthy: investigate playback conditions and latency separately; changing FFmpeg’s file-read rate may not help.
Use the exact health message and the timing of the symptom to choose the next check. YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance recommends testing upload bitrate and monitoring stream health.
Check how FFmpeg reads the file
When FFmpeg reads a regular file, it can consume the file faster than real time unless its input rate is constrained. FFmpeg’s current command-line documentation defines -readrate 1 as real-time pacing, equivalent to -re. The default -readrate 0 imposes no speed limit.

For a prerecorded file being sent as a live stream, real-time pacing is commonly the relevant behavior to verify. Check the input options in the command and confirm they are applied to the file input. FFmpeg describes read-rate controls as useful for simulating a capture device when reading from a file.
Do not apply a low read rate indiscriminately to a live capture input. FFmpeg warns that throttling an actual capture or live input can cause packet loss. The correct pacing depends on whether the input is a file or a source that is already arriving in real time.

Verify that processing can sustain the media clock
Real-time file pacing does not make decoding, filters, or encoding faster. If those stages cannot keep up, the output can fall behind even when FFmpeg reads the file at the intended rate. Monitor progress during a representative run and identify which stage is consuming time; a single short run does not establish stable 24/7 performance.
- Record FFmpeg’s progress output and note whether the processed media time continues to advance at the intended pace.
- Use FFmpeg’s
-benchmarkoption for end-of-run CPU, time, and memory statistics. Use-benchmark_allfor timings during encoding and decoding stages. - Assess the actual workload, including source format, frame rate, filters, and chosen encoder. The benchmark options provide timing information; they do not guarantee sustained operation over a long stream.

Match the outgoing stream to YouTube’s live guidance
Compare the stream FFmpeg sends—not merely the source file—with YouTube’s current live recommendations for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe frequency, with no interval over 4 seconds. Its guidance also specifies different bitrate ranges for different video configurations.
| Example YouTube live configuration | Published bitrate range |
|---|---|
| H.264, 1080p30 | 5–14 Mbps |
| H.264, 1080p60 | 6–17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not measurements of your connection or a guarantee that a particular host can sustain a 24/7 stream. Use the row matching the actual codec and frame rate rather than treating either example as universal. Check the current YouTube live encoder settings table before changing settings; do not substitute YouTube’s upload-file recommendations for live ingest guidance.

Measure upload capacity and check keyframes
FFmpeg’s output must reach YouTube reliably. YouTube says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” Measure the actual connection under representative operating conditions and compare sustainable upload performance with the complete outgoing stream bitrate. If the connection cannot sustain it, reduce the outgoing bitrate or resolution. YouTube does not specify a universal upload-headroom percentage, so do not treat an arbitrary margin as a platform rule.
If Live Control Room reports a keyframe problem, inspect the actual encoded output after any frame-rate or encoder changes. YouTube says, “Currently, keyframes are not being sent often enough, which can cause buffering.” Set keyframes every 2 seconds and do not exceed 4 seconds; YouTube also recommends a closed GOP for optimal transcoding. See its live streaming error messages for the reported error and remedy.

When ingest is healthy but viewers still buffer
A healthy ingest indicator alongside viewer-only buffering points away from assuming a source-read fault. Check the selected latency mode and the conditions on affected viewers’ devices, players, and connections. YouTube cautions that “Lower latency may mean more playback buffering.” Whether lower latency is worth that trade-off depends on how much live interaction matters for the stream. See Manage live stream settings for YouTube’s latency guidance.
Do not buy hardware before measuring a bottleneck
A high source bitrate alone does not establish that an SSD, GPU, workstation, router, cable, or standalone encoder is needed. First determine whether source reads, processing, outgoing bitrate, upload capacity, YouTube ingest, or viewer playback is the limiting step. Choose hardware only if measurements identify a specific bottleneck it can address.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the aim is to keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running without leaving a home computer on, StreamNeo is a cloud service that loops uploaded videos or playlists to YouTube. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. For Indian creators, UPI is supported. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera.
