If FFmpeg reports Connection timed out while sending a YouTube Live stream over Indian broadband, first verify the exact server URL shown in YouTube Live Control Room and confirm that your installed FFmpeg build supports RTMPS. Those are YouTube’s two first checks for this error. The message alone does not show whether the cause is the endpoint, FFmpeg’s TLS/RTMPS support, or network connectivity; being in India does not by itself establish an ISP block or regional fault.
Start with the two checks YouTube specifies
Match the current server URL in YouTube Studio
Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and inspect the stream settings for the stream you are trying to send. Compare the assigned server URL and protocol character for character with FFmpeg’s output destination. YouTube advises using RTMPS rather than RTMP for this troubleshooting check; do not substitute a guessed ingest hostname or assume an old saved URL is still the right one. YouTube’s timeout guidance names an incorrect server URL as a possible cause. YouTube: Troubleshoot live streaming issues.
Check the FFmpeg build you are actually running
YouTube also identifies an encoder without RTMPS support as a possible cause. Check the installed binary, not just the package name or the fact that another FFmpeg installation worked before. Record the version and build configuration, and verify that this build supports the TLS/RTMPS transport required by the destination. FFmpeg distributions can differ in how they are built, so do not assume support without checking.
RTMPS is RTMP carried through an SSL connection, as described in Google’s YouTube Live Streaming API RTMPS guide. A URL that merely resembles an RTMP address is not proof that the connection is using YouTube’s requested secure transport.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Capture enough evidence to locate the timeout
Connection timed out by itself does not identify the stage that failed. Depending on the command and log context, the failure may involve resolving the host, opening a TCP connection, establishing TLS, completing the RTMP handshake, or transmitting media later. Preserve the full command and the surrounding output before changing multiple settings at once.
- Record the timestamp, FFmpeg version and build configuration, exact destination host and protocol, and the preceding and following log lines.
- Redact the stream key before sharing logs or commands. Treat it as a password: anyone with it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Note whether the failure happens immediately or after a connection appears to have succeeded, and whether YouTube Studio shows an incoming stream.
- Keep a copy of the original command so you can tell which single change altered the result.
Use port 443 advice only in the right context
YouTube’s guidance mentions explicitly specifying port 443 in its section about an invalid SSL certificate. Its separate section for Connection timed out emphasizes checking the server URL and encoder support. Therefore, adding :443 is not a universal timeout fix. Compare the endpoint with the value YouTube currently gives you, and only alter the port when the applicable YouTube setting or error diagnosis supports doing so. See YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance.

Separate FFmpeg problems from broadband reachability
Confirm the encoder is functioning
YouTube recommends checking that the encoder is working, then checking the outbound internet connection if encoder output is healthy. First establish whether FFmpeg is running the intended command and whether its logs show a connection attempt or successful transmission. If it reaches YouTube but the stream does not play correctly, investigate stream health and media settings rather than treating that as the same problem as a connection timeout.
Test connectivity without over-interpreting a speed test
A speed test can show whether the line has obvious general connectivity or throughput trouble, but it does not prove that the specific YouTube ingest host and port are reachable. If possible, compare the same FFmpeg command and destination from a separate network, such as a mobile hotspot, while keeping the stream key private. A failure on one broadband connection and success on another is useful evidence for narrowing the issue; it does not alone prove that the ISP is blocking YouTube.

YouTube advises contacting the ISP if outbound connectivity testing identifies a connectivity problem. When you do, provide the timestamp, destination host and port, whether the attempt reaches DNS/TCP/TLS stages if known, and whether the same setup succeeds on another network. The actual ISP, city, router, and line type matter to a case-specific diagnosis; none can be inferred from “Indian broadband” alone. YouTube: Troubleshoot live stream issues.
Use FFmpeg protocol options only when they match the failure
FFmpeg documents timeout, connection-timeout, and reconnection options for particular protocols and operations. They are not interchangeable global fixes. In particular, HTTP input reconnection flags should not be pasted into an RTMPS output command as if they repaired an ingest connection timeout. Inspect the help and protocol documentation for the installed build, then use only options applicable to the protocol and whether FFmpeg is reading or writing. See the FFmpeg protocol documentation.

Increasing a timeout may change how long FFmpeg waits, but it does not correct a wrong host, missing RTMPS support, or unreachable route. Avoid changing timeout, reconnect, URL, and encoding parameters together: that makes it harder to identify what resolved the issue.

A timeout before YouTube receives a connection is different from a connected stream that delivers unsupported or insufficient media. Once FFmpeg reaches YouTube, use the Live Control Room’s stream-health diagnostics and their listed status descriptions to investigate media or ingest problems. Do not use stream-health messages as proof of an earlier network timeout’s cause. See YouTube’s live stream troubleshooting and health guidance.

Common symptoms and the next useful check
| Observation | What it suggests | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg uses a different host or RTMP instead of the current RTMPS setting | The destination may not match the server YouTube assigned. | Copy the current URL and protocol from Live Control Room; do not guess an ingest hostname. |
| The build’s RTMPS/TLS capability is unknown | The encoder may lack the transport support YouTube requires. | Check the installed binary’s version, build configuration, and documentation. |
| The error appears before any incoming stream is visible | The failure is likely before YouTube can assess the media; the message alone does not identify whether DNS, TCP, TLS, or handshake failed. | Capture full logs and compare connection behavior on a separate network if available. |
| YouTube receives the stream but reports a media or stream-health problem | The connection has progressed beyond a simple failure to establish it. | Use YouTube’s stream-health status and descriptions to diagnose the media/ingest issue. |
| The setup works over another network but not the broadband line | The network path or local configuration may be relevant, but the comparison does not prove ISP fault or blocking. | Share timestamped connection details with the ISP and continue checking endpoint and local network behavior. |
