MediaPackage has no single flat price for a 24/7 YouTube stream. AWS bills for live video ingested and video originated and packaged, while a complete workflow may also incur separate encoder, CDN, and data-transfer charges. Your estimate depends on region, input bitrate and stream count, redundancy, audience delivery, and how much traffic is served from cache.
What MediaPackage charges for live streaming
AWS identifies two usage components for live packaging: video ingest, and video origination and packaging. Ingest charges reflect the amount of input video received; origination and packaging charges reflect the volume MediaPackage serves toward a CDN. Higher-bitrate or additional input streams increase ingest volume. More video served from MediaPackage increases origination and packaging volume. See the AWS Elemental MediaPackage pricing page for the current billing model and applicable rates.
CloudFront caching can reduce how much video MediaPackage has to originate and package: requests served from cache do not require the same volume to be delivered from MediaPackage. AWS recommends caching for this reason. The effect depends on actual cache behavior and traffic; a cache-hit assumption is not a guaranteed result.
AWS’s worked example—and what it does not tell you
AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS deployment guide provides an illustrative one-hour example for about 1,000 viewers watching an SD-540p profile in US East (N. Virginia). Under the guide’s assumptions, MediaPackage ingest is estimated at $0.11 and packaging/origination at $0.40 for that hour. In the same scenario, the guide estimates MediaLive at $1.99 per hour and CloudFront distribution at $67.24 per hour. These figures are scenario-specific estimates, not a current quote for your channel or a YouTube-specific bill. The guide assumes standard pricing with no free tier or discounts, a 99% CDN cache/hit ratio, and viewers consuming the highest bitrate; AWS says actual costs may be lower and prices can change. See the AWS Live Streaming on AWS cost estimate.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The guide’s ingest example uses $0.03 per GB for standard live ingest and derives billable data from the aggregate bitrate of the live input streams. Its example converts 4.2 Mbps to about 1.85 GB per hour before its stated redundancy assumption, or 3.70 GB per hour with redundancy, yielding $0.11 per hour. Treat this as the guide’s example calculation and unit convention, not a universal rate for every region or setup.
How to estimate a 24/7 workload
Do not extrapolate the one-hour, 1,000-viewer example into a continuous-stream quote without matching its assumptions. Model your actual operating hours and traffic, and check current pricing for the region and services you plan to use. AWS recommends cost estimation and budget monitoring; rates can change.

- Choose the AWS region. Pricing is region-dependent. The US East example above should not be treated as a rate card for another region.
- List every live input. Record each input’s bitrate and number of streams. Calculate from aggregate input bitrate, and state whether you use redundant input pipelines.
- Estimate MediaPackage output volume. Use expected output bitrate and audience traffic, then account for the portion served from CDN cache versus fetched from MediaPackage.
- Use actual operating hours. For continuous operation, estimate the hours the workflow will run over your billing period rather than applying a one-hour example without adjustment.
- Include the whole delivery workflow. Identify whether MediaLive, CloudFront, internet data transfer, storage, or other services apply, and include them in the estimate where relevant.
- Verify the result against current AWS prices. The deployment guide recommends estimating costs and monitoring budgets. Its scenario is illustrative, and your account-specific total depends on configuration and current rates.
For delivery through a CDN other than CloudFront, internet data-transfer charges may also apply. Compare estimates only when region, input bitrate and redundancy, MediaPackage-originated volume after caching, operating hours, and encoder/transcoder and viewer-delivery costs are aligned. AWS’s May 20, 2019 live-streaming cost FAQ makes the same practical point: the question “how much will a live video stream cost?” requires working through the workflow details first. Its older example prices are not a current rate card.
Clarify the YouTube route before budgeting
The cited AWS material describes MediaPackage receiving encoder input and providing endpoints for players or CDNs. It does not establish that MediaPackage itself is the direct contribution route to YouTube. Before treating this as a YouTube workflow or pricing a complete setup, clarify whether you mean using AWS to send a contribution feed to YouTube, serving a separate audience-facing origin, or both. Do not assume that MediaPackage’s endpoint role proves direct YouTube compatibility; verify the intended architecture and each service’s role in current AWS setup guidance.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is simply to keep uploaded videos looping on a YouTube channel, StreamNeo is a simpler alternative to assembling an AWS workflow: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube only; it is not a camera-live service.
