For a simpler detached command, nohup can work if you redirect input and output explicitly. In all three cases, include FFmpeg’s -nostdin option when it should not read from the terminal.
Choose the right way to detach FFmpeg
An SSH disconnect is not itself a guarantee that a foreground process will continue. Use a deliberate process or session manager, then verify the job after reconnecting. DigitalOcean’s SSH documentation covers Droplet access and troubleshooting; it does not establish a special process-persistence guarantee for FFmpeg jobs. DigitalOcean’s SSH connection guide and SSH troubleshooting guide address the connection, not the process lifecycle.

Use tmux for an interactive one-off job
A detached tmux session stays available on the Droplet through an SSH disconnection and can be reattached later. Install tmux with the package manager for the Droplet’s Linux distribution if needed.

Start a named session:
tmux new -s ffmpeg. -
Run your FFmpeg command inside it, using your actual input, output, codec, and paths. For example:

Detach without closing the session: press Ctrl-b, then d. You can now disconnect SSH.

After reconnecting, list sessions with
tmux ls, then reattach withtmux attach -t ffmpeg.
If FFmpeg exits, reattaching may reveal its final terminal output. Save logs separately if the session’s scrollback is not enough. The tmux(1) manual documents detaching and continuing a session.
Use systemd when the Droplet should manage the job
A systemd unit is useful when you want the server to track a process and expose its status and logs. This is a starting shape, not a ready-made unit: adapt the absolute executable path, arguments, working directory, and file permissions for your job.

Enable it at boot only if that is actually the intended behavior. A one-off encode may already be complete at the next boot, or its output may already exist.
Choose Restart= to match the workload: a one-time transcode that exits successfully generally should not be restarted after success. See the systemd service manual for restart policy details and the journalctl manual for journal inspection. Available options and behavior depend on the systemd version installed on the Droplet.
Use nohup for a basic detached command
If you do not need to reconnect to the live terminal or have a service manager supervise the job, this shell pattern redirects output to a log and input from /dev/null:
nohup ffmpeg -nostdin -i INPUT OUTPUT >ffmpeg.log 2>&1 < /dev/null &
printf '%sn' "$!"Save the printed PID and check process state after reconnecting. A PID alone is not a reliable health check if the process has exited. Unlike tmux or systemd, this does not provide an attachable terminal, a restart policy, or service status. Validate the command for your shell and installed packages.

Why -nostdin matters
FFmpeg normally checks console input, which can suspend a process running in the background. Its FAQ recommends adding -nostdin to the FFmpeg invocation; on Linux and macOS, redirecting standard input from /dev/null is another documented remedy. Use -nostdin when the job should not accept keyboard input. The FFmpeg FAQ covers background execution, and its command-line documentation is regenerated nightly; if your installed build behaves differently, consult documentation for that version.
Troubleshoot a job that stopped or is hard to find

FFmpeg appears suspended or mentions a terminal. It may be checking console input. Add
-nostdinor redirect standard input from/dev/null. -
The tmux session is missing. Check
tmux lsafter reconnecting. Make sure you detached with Ctrl-b, then d, rather than closing the session. If it is listed, reattach to view the terminal. -
A systemd job is inactive or failed. Run
systemctl status ffmpeg-job.serviceand inspectjournalctl -u ffmpeg-job.servicefor the exit state and output.PC Slower Than It Used to Be?

The process is alive but the encode fails. Check input and output paths, file permissions, available storage, and the FFmpeg output. A surviving process cannot fix an unavailable input, a full disk, expired credentials, or a disconnected remote source.

The job did not survive a reboot or another server failure. Session detachment addresses the SSH terminal, not Droplet reboot, host failure, out-of-memory termination, or FFmpeg errors. A service manager can apply a chosen restart policy, but that does not guarantee successful completion of a media job.
