You can run a YouTube Live feed from a DigitalOcean Droplet by preparing an Ubuntu server, connecting an encoder such as FFmpeg or the DigitalOcean Marketplace SRS image to YouTube’s stream URL and key, and supervising the encoder process. A Droplet is a virtual machine, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service: sizing depends on the workload, a single server is a single point of failure, and YouTube’s guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived—not that one continuous 24-hour stream will produce one complete archive.

This guide is for Tamil-speaking creators who want to stream a video file, playlist, or other supported source to YouTube. It does not require a camera for a file-based workflow. Configure YouTube’s stream and test the intended schedule before relying on it.

Choose an approach before creating the Droplet

There are two practical server-side routes. Direct FFmpeg is the simpler fit when the source is already a file, playlist, or generated media and the server only needs to send it to YouTube. DigitalOcean’s SRS one-click image is aimed at broader ingest and restreaming workflows, including RTMP, SRT, WebRTC, and RTSP sources. Neither route has a universally correct Droplet size: CPU, memory, disk, network transfer, source format, and whether you transcode all matter. DigitalOcean’s production example uses Ubuntu 24.04 and shows a 2-vCPU/2-GB plan in a `doctl` example, but does not establish that size as sufficient for every encoding job (DigitalOcean recommended Droplet setup).

Consideration Direct FFmpeg DigitalOcean SRS Marketplace image
Best fit Local media file, playlist, or generated source sent directly to YouTube. Workflows needing multi-protocol ingest, restreaming, or handling sources such as RTSP.
What the source establishes FFmpeg is part of the SRS stack, but the cited official pages do not provide a ready-tested 24/7 FFmpeg command. DigitalOcean’s catalog describes RTMP, SRT, and WebRTC publishing; FFmpeg transcoding; RTSP pulling; restreaming; and MP4 recording.
Configuration and exposure Configure the media input and YouTube output. A push-only setup generally does not need inbound RTMP publisher access. May require additional configuration and inbound ports for publishers or a control panel; expose only what the chosen setup needs and restrict sources where possible.
Capacity, reliability, cost Depends on media, encoding, and workload; no comparative benchmark or specific cost is established. Depends on media, encoding, and workload; the catalog does not establish suitability, sizing, performance, or cost for a particular 24/7 feed.

When DigitalOcean’s Marketplace catalog was crawled on 3 October 2026, it displayed SRS Stack 5.13.31, SRS 5.0, and FFmpeg 4.2. These are catalog labels as displayed at that time, not a claim that they are the latest upstream versions; check the current listing before deployment (DigitalOcean Marketplace SRS listing).

Prepare the YouTube channel and stream

  1. Enable live streaming. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours. Complete it before scheduling a broadcast.
  2. Create or schedule an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream using the encoder workflow. Copy the stream URL and stream key for the encoder.
  3. Protect the key. YouTube describes a stream key as like a password and address. Do not put it in a public script, screenshot, or source repository. If it is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room.
  4. Test the planned duration and content. Check stream health in Live Control Room before treating the setup as ready. YouTube’s encoder guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; it does not establish that a single 24-hour stream becomes one complete archive.

See YouTube’s encoder workflow and stream-key guidance for the current Live Control Room process.

Create and harden the DigitalOcean Droplet

  1. Create a Droplet with a current Ubuntu LTS image. Ubuntu 24.04 is the example in DigitalOcean’s production setup documentation. Choose CPU, memory, disk, and transfer capacity for the actual workload; a sample plan is not a universal encoding recommendation.
  2. Use SSH-key authentication and a sudo non-root account. Avoid making routine server changes as root.
  3. Apply a cloud firewall. DigitalOcean recommends beginning with inbound SSH access and permitted outbound traffic. A server that only pushes a feed to YouTube normally needs outbound connectivity, not an open inbound RTMP port. Add inbound ports only if the selected architecture accepts incoming publishers or uses a web control panel, and restrict their sources where possible. Do not open port 1935 by default without a reason tied to your topology.
  4. Enable monitoring and backups. Keep a recovery path for server changes and watch resource use while the encoder runs.
  5. Optionally automate first-boot setup. DigitalOcean user data accepts Bash scripts or cloud-config, which cloud-init consumes on first boot. This is optional rather than a prerequisite (DigitalOcean user data documentation).

DigitalOcean describes Cloud Firewalls as a free, stateful firewall service for Droplets. Its recommended setup documentation was last verified on 3 September 2026 (recommended setup; Cloud Firewalls).

Connect FFmpeg to YouTube with RTMPS

For a file-based stream, FFmpeg can read and encode or mux the media, then push it to YouTube. The official sources cited here establish YouTube’s encoder settings but do not provide a ready-tested FFmpeg command for a 24/7 deployment. Commands vary with the input’s codecs, audio tracks, installed FFmpeg build, and desired reconnect behavior, so validate the command against your actual file and installed version instead of pasting an unverified recipe into production.

  1. Install FFmpeg using a trusted method appropriate to the Ubuntu release, then confirm the installed version and available codecs.
  2. Inspect the input file and determine whether it can be sent without transcoding or needs video/audio conversion. Transcoding adds CPU load; test the chosen Droplet under the intended settings.
  3. Configure the output with the YouTube stream URL and key. Prefer RTMPS, YouTube’s recommended secure extension to RTMP (YouTube encoder settings).
  4. Keep credentials out of shell history, publicly readable files, logs, and repositories. Restrict access to any file or service configuration containing the key.
  5. Start a private or unlisted test stream where suitable, then check YouTube’s stream-health status and the server’s CPU, memory, network, and logs. Confirm the feed remains healthy after a process restart before scheduling a longer run.

A playlist or generated source needs its own tested input and looping behavior. Confirm that transitions, audio, and reconnects behave as intended; a process that starts successfully is not proof that the stream will sustain your schedule.

Use the DigitalOcean SRS image when you need its ingest features

DigitalOcean’s SRS Marketplace image is an alternative to a direct file-to-YouTube FFmpeg pipeline when you need SRS’s described protocol options, RTSP pulling, restreaming, or recording. The listing describes publishing over RTMP, SRT, and WebRTC, FFmpeg transcoding, and recording to MP4 (SRS Marketplace listing). Those features do not establish a tested 24/7 configuration or the resources needed for your source.

  1. Deploy the SRS image from the current DigitalOcean Marketplace listing and review its current installation instructions and version labels.
  2. Decide whether SRS will accept an incoming publisher, pull an RTSP source, or simply send an existing source onward. Configure only the required roles.
  3. Permit only the inbound ports required by that design in the cloud firewall. If an incoming publisher or control panel is reachable from the internet, limit access where possible and secure its credentials.
  4. Configure the YouTube output using the stream URL and secret key. Prefer RTMPS where supported by the configured output path, then verify stream health in Live Control Room.
  5. If recording to MP4, monitor disk consumption and set a retention and cleanup plan before storage fills.

Set encoder quality and check bandwidth

YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest and recommends RTMPS. Its published encoder guidance includes H.264, H.265, or AV1; up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds that must not exceed 4 seconds. Choose a resolution and frame rate your source and server can sustain, and use the bitrate row for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually select (YouTube encoder settings).

H.264 example from YouTube’s bitrate table Recommended bitrate Minimum bitrate
1080p30 14 Mbps 5 Mbps
720p30 8 Mbps 3 Mbps
480p30 4 Mbps 0.4 Mbps

These are YouTube’s platform recommendations, not a guarantee of picture quality or a measurement of your server’s capacity. As a lower-bandwidth starting point, the listed H.264 recommendation for 480p30 is 4 Mbps; use the matching codec-and-frame-rate guidance when you choose other settings (YouTube bitrate table).

YouTube advises keeping upload bandwidth 20% above the stream bitrate and checking available upload capacity. For a cloud server, estimate outbound transfer from the chosen bitrate and number of streaming seconds, then include audio and protocol overhead and compare the result with the current Droplet plan’s transfer terms before committing. This is an engineering estimate, not a DigitalOcean price quote; transfer allowances and plan costs should be checked for the plan and region you intend to use (YouTube streaming tips; DigitalOcean Droplet pricing).

Keep the stream running and recover deliberately

A process supervisor can restart an encoder process after it exits, but a restart policy alone does not make a fault-tolerant 24/7 service. One Droplet remains a single point of failure. Build and test the recovery path rather than assuming uninterrupted uptime.

  • Supervise the process: configure a service manager or equivalent to start the encoder on boot, restart it after failure, and make its logs available to an administrator.
  • Watch the right signals: monitor process status, CPU and memory pressure, network activity, disk space if recording, and YouTube’s stream health.
  • Test failures safely: verify what happens after an encoder exit, a server restart, a lost input, or a dropped YouTube connection. Confirm whether the process resumes and whether YouTube accepts the restarted feed.
  • Plan for storage: if SRS records MP4 files, track free space and remove or move recordings according to a deliberate retention policy.
  • Account for YouTube archives: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a single continuous 24-hour feed will be one complete archive; test the schedule and review YouTube’s current live-stream behavior (YouTube encoder workflow).

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube does not receive the feed Incorrect stream URL or key, live streaming not enabled, or outbound connectivity failure. Recheck the stream details in Live Control Room, confirm activation is complete, and inspect server network and encoder logs. Reset the key if you suspect exposure.
Connection fails or is rejected Ingest URL, protocol, or key mismatch; the encoder may not be using the intended RTMPS endpoint. Use the URL and key issued for that stream, verify the configured output protocol, and prefer RTMPS as YouTube recommends.
Stream health is poor or unstable Insufficient outbound headroom, an unsuitable bitrate, CPU overload during transcoding, or an unstable source. Compare sustained bandwidth with the stream bitrate plus YouTube’s 20% headroom recommendation; check server resource use and choose settings the source and server can maintain.
Encoder stops and does not return No process supervision or restart configuration, or the source/output failure is not handled. Inspect service status and logs, configure and test restart behavior, and verify recovery after an intentional test interruption.
SRS publisher cannot connect Required inbound port is blocked, or the server is not configured to accept that publisher. Confirm the selected SRS topology and its required ports before changing the firewall; open only the necessary inbound access and restrict sources where possible.
Recording stops because storage is full MP4 files accumulated without a retention or cleanup policy. Check disk usage and logs, free space safely, and implement a tested retention plan before enabling long recordings.
