If live chat is disabled on a scheduled YouTube broadcast made with Wirecast, check the event’s settings in YouTube Studio first—not Wirecast’s audio or video controls. In the Live Control Room, open the scheduled event, select Edit > Live Chat, and check whether Enable live chat is available and selected. If it is on but chat remains unavailable, check the audience setting and any YouTube policy or channel restrictions.
First, identify what is not working
“Chat is disabled” can mean viewers cannot see the chat, can see it but cannot send messages, or that the scheduled broadcast itself is not live. These are different problems. The chat switch is in YouTube Studio; Wirecast handles the broadcast destination and output. Confirm which symptom viewers see before changing settings.
- Broadcast is live, but chat is missing or unavailable: check the event’s Live Chat setting and YouTube restrictions.
- The scheduled event is not receiving video: check the event selection, account connection, and output in Wirecast as well as the event status in Studio.
Enable live chat for the scheduled event in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room.
- Select the scheduled broadcast that matches the event you intend to stream.
- Choose Edit, then open Live Chat.
- Turn on Enable live chat if the control is available, then save the change.
- Check the event again to confirm the setting and whether viewers can use chat.
YouTube says live chat can be turned on or off at any time, including after an event has started. That means you can check the setting during a live broadcast rather than assuming it had to be enabled in advance. YouTube’s live chat help describes the control.
Check whether YouTube has disabled chat for the content or channel
Made for Kids audience setting
If the stream or channel is set as Made for Kids, YouTube disables live chat. YouTube also says chat replay and Super Chat are disabled for this audience setting. Check the audience designation for the event and channel in Studio; a Wirecast setting cannot override it. YouTube’s guidance on Made for Kids content explains the effects.

Age-related safety restrictions
YouTube says chat may be disabled on streams featuring 13- to 15-year-olds who are not visibly accompanied by an adult. If that could apply to the broadcast, review YouTube’s safety guidance and any notices shown in Studio. Do not assume a missing chat control is a Wirecast fault.
Live-streaming eligibility, policy, or copyright restrictions
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days to live stream. YouTube also identifies policy, copyright, and channel-status restrictions that can affect a stream or channel. Review Studio notifications and account status for the specific reason; the general rules cannot determine what restriction, if any, applies to an individual channel. YouTube’s live-streaming access guidance covers eligibility, while its live-streaming restrictions guidance describes restrictions that may affect streams.

Use Wirecast to check the broadcast—not the chat switch
Wirecast’s YouTube integration is for configuring and sending the broadcast, including connecting to YouTube, choosing an event, and setting output and encoding. The reviewed Wirecast guidance does not replace YouTube Studio’s Live Chat setting. Telestream’s Wirecast YouTube guide, updated May 15, 2026, describes its YouTube workflow.
- In Wirecast, verify that the intended YouTube account is connected and authenticated.
- Confirm the selected destination or scheduled event is the same event you opened in the Live Control Room.
- Check that Wirecast is sending output to YouTube if the event is supposed to be live.
- Compare the event shown in Studio with the event selected in Wirecast. If the event is receiving video but chat is unavailable, return to the Studio Live Chat setting and review the restrictions above.
If the chat control is unavailable or changing it does not help
- Enable live chat is missing or unavailable: check whether the event is Made for Kids, whether a safety or policy restriction applies, and whether Studio displays a channel or stream notice.
- The switch is on, but viewers still cannot use chat: verify that you changed the correct scheduled event, save the change, and check the audience setting and Studio notices.
- The event is absent, or it is not receiving a Wirecast feed: verify the connected account, destination, selected event, and Wirecast output. This is a broadcast-setup problem, distinct from chat availability.
- A restriction appears on the channel: follow the notice and any review or appeal route YouTube provides. The restriction for one channel cannot be diagnosed from the general help pages alone.
If the broadcast itself cannot be scheduled or sent after checking the account and event selection, contact Telestream support or use Wirecast’s in-app support ticket workflow. For a chat restriction or unavailable Studio control, start with YouTube’s notices and account guidance.
