Neither OBS nor FFmpeg is proven to use less electricity for a YouTube loop stream in every setup. The result depends on the computer and the work it performs: encoder, output resolution and frame rate, and—in OBS—the scene’s compositing and rendering workload. No matched wall-power comparison for this exact use case establishes a universal winner or a reliable wattage saving. To know which uses less on your system, compare them under controlled, equivalent conditions.
Why the software name does not settle the power question
Streaming electricity use depends on the whole workload, not just whether you launch OBS or FFmpeg. OBS says its CPU requirements vary considerably with the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. OBS also uses GPU resources to composite and render scenes. FFmpeg can loop, filter, and transcode media, and its hardware options depend on the build, device, and drivers.
As a result, a simple OBS scene and a straightforward FFmpeg pipeline may do different amounts of work even when they send the same video. A more complicated scene, scaling or filtering, or a different encoding path can change the comparison. A configuration described as “hardware accelerated” is not automatically more energy-efficient for the complete computer.
What each workflow does that can affect electricity use
OBS: encoding plus scene rendering
OBS can capture and compose sources into a scene before encoding the stream. Its performance guidance recommends simplifying scenes and reducing resolution, frame rate, or expensive sources when resource use is a problem. If the loop is just one video source, avoid adding unnecessary browser sources, filters, overlays, or animated elements; they add work that a bare loop may not need.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
FFmpeg: loop and processing pipeline
FFmpeg is a media converter that can read media, filter or transcode streams, and write outputs. Its loop video filter repeats frames; setting loop=-1 requests an infinite loop. That documents how to repeat frames, not how much power a complete live-streaming pipeline will draw. Decoding, scaling, filtering, encoding, audio handling, and output settings all matter.
Software and hardware encoding
OBS generally recommends hardware encoders for performance because they move encoding work off the CPU to a specialized GPU component. That guidance does not quantify a reduction in total wall power. Hardware encoder generations can also differ in image quality at the same bitrate, so a lower-power result is not a fair win if the video quality changes materially.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
FFmpeg’s hardware support depends on its build and the installed drivers. Its documentation cautions that many hardware-acceleration methods target playback and may not be faster than software decoding on modern CPUs. “Hardware acceleration” alone therefore does not establish either a lower electricity bill or a better streaming result.
How to compare OBS and FFmpeg on your computer
If your decision depends on electricity use, run a controlled comparison rather than relying on a general claim. The following controls are practical recommendations based on the workload factors documented for the two workflows; they are not results from a published head-to-head test.

- Keep the system and stream target fixed. Use the same computer, source file, destination, and network conditions for both runs.
- Match the output. Set the same resolution, frame rate, and audio and video settings. Match the encoding path and quality target as closely as each program allows, and note where the settings cannot be made equivalent.
- Record your configuration. Write down the OBS or FFmpeg version, encoder, relevant settings, and any scene sources, filters, scaling, or other processing. This helps explain a difference instead of attributing it to the program name.
- Measure whole-system wall power. Let each run stabilize and measure for equal intervals. Repeat the runs and compare averages. If you want the added draw caused by streaming, measure the same computer’s idle baseline under the same conditions and compare each run with it.
- Check that the result is equivalent. Confirm that each stream stays live and that video and audio quality are acceptable. A run that drops frames or sends lower-quality output is not an equivalent lower-power result.
A general outlet power meter can measure the computer’s whole-system draw, but the available evidence does not establish a specific model as necessary. Avoid converting a short or unmatched reading into a universal claim about OBS or FFmpeg.
What the available energy evidence can—and cannot—show
A 2015 study hosted by Simon Fraser University measured energy use in a game streaming and recording benchmark and reported an increase in energy consumption for its software-encoding condition. That is a different workload from streaming an already-rendered video loop, and it did not compare OBS with FFmpeg. Its result should not be used to predict watts or percentage savings for this question.
