A systemd service can restart FFmpeg after a process failure, but it cannot guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast: the VPS, network, media input, or YouTube connection can still fail. This guide covers setup, sensible YouTube settings, monitoring, and the archive and rights issues that matter for a continuous stream.
What you need before you start
- An Ubuntu VPS that permits continuous outbound video streaming and has enough sustained transfer capacity for your chosen bitrate.
- SSH access with permission to install packages and create a systemd service.
- FFmpeg installed on the server.
- A playlist of local video files and audio you are entitled to stream worldwide, including the necessary music rights.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled, plus a live stream configuration and its stream key.
- Enough VPS storage for the media and, if you choose to keep one, a local recording archive.
An Indian VPS is a hosting choice, not a YouTube requirement. Locating the server in India may reduce network distance for an operator or audience there, but it does not by itself prove better reliability. Choose on sustained outbound capacity, transfer limits, CPU if encoding, storage, support, and monitoring or restart options—not just the advertised port speed.
Choose the YouTube stream settings
Use the current YouTube Live control room and encoder guidance for the exact resolution and bitrate choices available to your stream. YouTube’s guidance, accessed in 2026, supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. YouTube transcodes the incoming feed for different viewer formats.
- Pick a resolution and bitrate the VPS can sustain continuously. Higher quality requires more sustained outbound capacity; for real-time transcoding, it also requires sufficient CPU.
- Test the upload bitrate from the VPS and check the provider’s transfer allowance. A headline link speed does not establish guaranteed throughput over time.
- Use RTMPS where available. YouTube recommends it as the secure extension of RTMP; Google describes the connection as RTMP over SSL. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance and Google’s RTMPS documentation.
- Test with representative movement and audio, then check YouTube’s stream health. A process that is still running may nevertheless be sending frozen frames or silent audio.
Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password: do not publish it in a repository, screenshot, or shared log. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the server configuration.

Prepare a playlist and loop it with FFmpeg
Put your media on the VPS in a directory such as /srv/youtube-stream/. Create a text file named playlist.txt in that directory with one FFmpeg concat-demuxer entry per file, using paths appropriate to your server:

It sets the output to CBR-style video rate control, a two-second GOP, and RTMPS output. Replace the placeholder stream key with your own, and confirm that your files’ codecs, frame rate, resolution, and audio are compatible with the settings chosen in YouTube. If they are not, use an FFmpeg encoding configuration appropriate to your installed version and media; real-time transcoding uses VPS CPU.

Therefore, verify that the source files meet YouTube’s chosen output expectations before relying on this command. The loop option and concat input behavior should also be checked against the FFmpeg version installed on the VPS. If you need transcoding, select explicit video and audio settings that match your stream configuration rather than blindly copying this example.

Run FFmpeg under systemd
A systemd unit can start the encoder at boot and restart it if the FFmpeg process exits. Create /etc/systemd/system/youtube-playlist.service with the correct paths and a protected key in the command:

WantedBy=multi-user.targetRestrict access to the unit file because it contains a credential; a root-readable environment file or another protected secret mechanism is preferable to a key embedded in a broadly readable command. After editing the unit, load and start it:

sudo systemctl status youtube-playlist.serviceUse sudo journalctl -u youtube-playlist.service -f to inspect live logs. A restart policy is a recovery mechanism for a stopped process, not an uptime guarantee or a full stream-health monitor.

Monitor the broadcast and plan for recovery
Check both the server and YouTube. In YouTube Live Control Room, confirm that the stream is receiving video and audio and review its health indicators. On the VPS, check systemd status and logs, available disk space, network connectivity, and whether the playlist inputs are still advancing. If the encoder appears active but YouTube reports poor health, verify that frames and audio are actually progressing rather than assuming process liveness means the stream is healthy.
- FFmpeg exits: inspect the journal for missing files, permission errors, unsupported media, or connection failures; correct the cause and confirm systemd restarts the service.
- YouTube receives no feed: check the RTMPS endpoint, current stream key, outbound firewall rules, and network connection.
- Video freezes or audio stops: inspect the input files and FFmpeg logs, then test with representative movement and sound while watching YouTube’s stream health.
- Quality is unstable: lower the selected output demand or move to a VPS plan whose sustained network and CPU capacity match it; do not infer continuous capacity from a port-speed label.
- A playlist item fails: confirm its path, permissions, and decode compatibility, and test the complete sequence rather than one file.
A public FFmpeg/systemd setup example documents an intermittent input or decoder issue, illustrating why supervision alone is not a substitute for monitoring. Vendor claims about unthrottled links or continuous FFmpeg tasks should be checked against the actual plan terms; they are not independent performance guarantees.

Understand YouTube archives, rights, and monetization
Do not rely on YouTube as the only archive
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends keeping a local recording backup. A single 24/7 broadcast should therefore not be treated as a guaranteed complete replay. See YouTube’s archive live streams guidance.

Confirm worldwide rights to every item
YouTube’s livestream terms put responsibility on the provider to have the necessary rights for worldwide exploitation of the live content, including music licensing rights. Looping a file technically does not grant permission to broadcast it. Use original or properly licensed video and audio, and verify that the license covers livestreaming and the relevant territories. Read YouTube’s terms.
Copyright permission and monetization eligibility are different
YouTube’s monetization policy applies to livestreams and assesses whether content is original and authentic. On July 15, 2025, YouTube clarified the policy and renamed “repetitious content” as “inauthentic content,” including repetitive or mass-produced material. Reused-content review is distinct from copyright enforcement: permission to use content does not by itself guarantee monetization eligibility. YouTube says eligible monetized livestreams may earn through ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and memberships, but ads are not guaranteed to serve. Compare plans using the traffic and workload your stream actually needs. Continuous outbound streaming can consume substantial monthly transfer, and the total depends on bitrate and service terms. Also account for storage, CPU if you transcode, backup space, region, support, and monitoring. The available India-host vendor result advertises an unthrottled gigabit uplink and continuous FFmpeg task loops; treat these as vendor claims and confirm the exact plan conditions rather than as independent evidence of sustained performance.

For an optional local archive, external storage can help preserve recordings, but it is not required to run the VPS stream. Keep the archive plan separate from the server’s source media and ensure that recording itself fits available disk and transfer limits.
