How to Upload a Large Video Library to Vultr for a YouTube Loop Stream

A practical guide to transferring a video library to Vultr, looping it in OBS, and connecting a YouTube Live stream—plus Rclone and troubleshooting notes.

To loop prerecorded videos on YouTube Live using Vultr, transfer the files to a Vultr server over SFTP, add them in OBS as a looping Media Source or VLC Video Source, then connect OBS to YouTube with the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. For a large library, you can also stage files in Vultr Object Storage with Rclone—but the documented workflow does not show OBS playing directly from an Object Storage bucket.

Choose where the library will live

For the most direct playback path, put the files in a server directory that the OBS process can access. Vultr’s Broadcaster guide demonstrates transferring files over SFTP and selecting them from that directory in OBS. Its example uses /tmp; treat that as an example, not a durable-storage recommendation. Choose a suitable directory for your server and deployment, and confirm OBS has permission to read it. See Vultr’s Broadcaster guide.

If you want a separate staging or storage location, Rclone can transfer files to Vultr Object Storage using its S3 backend. The cited documentation does not describe OBS reading those objects directly, so plan how to make the files accessible to the playback server—for example, by copying them to its local playback directory. Do not assume that configuring a bucket alone makes it an OBS media source. See Vultr’s Rclone guide.

Route A: transfer files directly to the Vultr server

  1. Connect over SFTP. Open a terminal on your computer and connect to your Vultr server with an SFTP client. Use the server address and account credentials for your deployment; keep credentials private.
  2. Choose a remote directory. Change to a directory accessible to the account and OBS. Vultr’s example uses /tmp, but it does not establish a universally suitable persistent path.
  3. Create a folder for the library. Make a directory for the files you intend to use in OBS, then change into it.
  4. Upload the files. Use SFTP’s put command to transfer files from your local directory to the remote working directory. For a large library, transfer in manageable batches and check that the uploaded files are present before configuring OBS.
  5. Confirm access from OBS. In OBS, browse to the uploaded folder when selecting a media file. If the files are missing from the chooser or fail to load, check the directory path and the permissions of the OBS process.

Route B: stage files in Vultr Object Storage with Rclone

Configure the S3 remote

Vultr’s Rclone guide configures the S3 backend with provider Vultr, a region-specific endpoint, and your Object Storage access key and secret key. The guide’s endpoint example is https://ewr1.vultrobjects.com; use the endpoint for your own region rather than assuming that example applies everywhere. It sets the bucket ACL to private. Keep objects private unless you have a deliberate need for public URL access.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose copy or sync carefully

  • rclone copy transfers files without mirroring deletions from the source.
  • rclone sync makes the destination match the source and can remove destination objects that are absent from the source. Check the destination and command before running it; do not treat sync as a harmless upload.

The guide also demonstrates transfers between buckets and regions. These are storage and transfer steps, not a documented direct connection between an Object Storage bucket and an OBS media source. Arrange a separate way to make the video files available to the server for playback.

Handle Object Storage rate-limit errors

Vultr says HTTP 429, 503, or 504 responses may indicate Object Storage rate limiting. Its guide suggests limiting transactions to 100 per second with --tpslimit 100 and using --transfers 1 to avoid parallel file transfers. These are troubleshooting suggestions, not guarantees of a particular transfer speed or completion time.

Set up OBS to loop one video or a playlist

Loop a single file

  1. In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene.
  2. Browse to the video file on the Vultr server.
  3. Enable Loop in the source properties and save.
  4. Check the preview for the expected picture. Confirm that the Audio Mixer shows the source audio if the file includes audio.

Rotate through multiple files

For a library that should play multiple files in sequence, Vultr’s guide directs users to the VLC Video Source and says to set up the files to play and loop repeatedly. Check the playlist order and verify playback in the OBS preview and Audio Mixer before going live. File paths must remain accessible to OBS while the stream is running.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. Prepare the live stream in YouTube Studio. Open the Live Control Room and create or manage the stream you intend to broadcast.
  2. Copy the ingest details. Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube’s live settings into OBS’s streaming settings. YouTube describes stream keys as “your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key private; if it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room.
  3. Use RTMPS. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingest. Confirm that OBS is set to the intended server URL and key before starting.
  4. Choose live encoder settings for your connection and output. YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 options, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant-bitrate encoding, and a recommended keyframe interval of two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. Choose resolution and bitrate using YouTube’s current settings table and your measured upload capacity; there is no universal preset that fits every connection.
  5. Test before the full broadcast. YouTube recommends a test with movement and audio representative of the real stream. Start streaming in OBS, check that the stream appears in the Live Control Room, and monitor stream health and any messages during the broadcast.

For a stream without audience interaction, lower latency may be less important; YouTube notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering. Select the latency setting with the viewing experience you need in mind.

Keep YouTube upload limits separate from Vultr transfers

YouTube’s rules for uploading an ordinary video to YouTube do not define limits for SFTP transfers to Vultr or Vultr Object Storage capacity. YouTube Help says unverified accounts are limited by default to individual uploads of 15 minutes or less; verified accounts can upload longer videos. For an individual YouTube upload, the maximum is 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever is less, and YouTube recommends using an up-to-date browser for files larger than 20 GB. Those figures concern YouTube’s ordinary video-upload feature, not the Vultr library workflow described here. See YouTube Help: Upload videos longer than 15 minutes.

Likewise, ordinary-upload encoding guidance is separate from live-encoder settings. Do not apply an upload preset in place of configuring OBS for YouTube Live; consult YouTube’s live encoder settings for the broadcast.

Common problems and fixes

  • OBS cannot find an uploaded file: Check that the transfer completed, the source points to the server-side path rather than your local computer’s path, and the OBS process can read that directory.
  • A file appears but does not play correctly: Verify the selected file and VLC playlist, then check the OBS preview and Audio Mixer. Confirm that the media files remain available at their configured paths.
  • The playlist stops after one item: Recheck the VLC Video Source playlist and its playback/loop configuration. A single Media Source’s Loop option is for repeating that source, not for building a multi-file rotation.
  • YouTube does not receive the OBS stream: Check the stream URL and key in OBS against the Live Control Room. If the key may have been exposed, reset it there and update OBS.
  • Stream health reports problems: Run a representative test and review YouTube’s health messages. Revisit the selected resolution, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, and measured upload capacity rather than increasing settings blindly.
  • Rclone receives HTTP 429, 503, or 504: Apply Vultr’s suggested --tpslimit 100 and --transfers 1 options, then retry and monitor the transfer.

Decide whether to self-host or use a managed service

Vultr plus OBS gives you control over the server and media workflow, but you are responsible for server setup, library access, stream monitoring, and recovery. YouTube’s verified-encoder directory lists OBS as open-source streaming and recording software, and also lists Gyre as a cloud-based service for 24/7 prerecorded-video streams. That directory does not establish comparative prices, reliability, limits, or terms, so compare current offers directly before choosing.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is the first alternative to consider if your goal is a continuous prerecorded-video stream to YouTube without maintaining a Vultr server and OBS setup. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud. It streams to YouTube only and does not go live from a camera.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the YouTube 256 GB upload cap limit SFTP uploads to Vultr?

No. It is YouTube’s limit for an individual ordinary video upload; it does not establish an SFTP or Vultr Object Storage limit.

Can OBS play videos directly from a Vultr Object Storage bucket?

The cited Vultr guide does not document that setup. It covers Rclone transfers to Object Storage, so arrange a separate way to make files accessible to the OBS playback server.
