You can keep a YouTube Live stream playing from a Vultr Cloud Compute server by running OBS on an Ubuntu instance, uploading the media to that server, and enabling OBS’s Loop option for the source. This moves playback and encoding off your personal computer, but it does not guarantee uninterrupted uptime: you still need to size the server and bandwidth for the workload, secure the stream key, and monitor the encoder.
What this setup does—and what “playlist” means here
This guide uses OBS on an Ubuntu server as a cloud-based encoder. The source-backed continuous-play method is to upload media files to the server, add a source in OBS, and enable Loop. Vultr’s Broadcaster guide specifically recommends uploading source files for a 24/7 stream and turning on Loop.
That instruction supports looping a source file. It does not establish that every playlist format, multi-file ordering scheme, or headless FFmpeg workflow will work unchanged. If you mean an ordered sequence of several files, confirm that your chosen OBS source or playlist workflow advances and repeats as intended before making the public broadcast continuous.
1. Provision an Ubuntu server that fits the workload
Create a Vultr Cloud Compute instance with Ubuntu. Vultr’s OBS/Ubuntu tutorial lists 2 vCPUs, 4 GB RAM, 80 GB storage, and 3 TB bandwidth as its prerequisites. Treat these as that tutorial’s example baseline, not as a tested universal minimum or a guarantee for a particular resolution, bitrate, encoder, or 24/7 workload. See Vultr’s OBS and Ubuntu guide.

Before choosing a plan, estimate three separate needs: CPU for encoding, disk for the source media, and monthly outbound transfer to YouTube. Vultr’s provisioning guidance describes choosing configurations by vCPU, memory, storage, and bandwidth; its Cloud Compute overview describes shared-CPU instances and the ability to scale compute, memory, storage, and bandwidth. A shared-CPU configuration is not a performance guarantee for software encoding.
- CPU: Watch OBS’s load and dropped-frame indicators during a representative stream. If encoding cannot keep pace, reduce output demands or consider more compute; Vultr’s tutorial also recommends monitoring CPU.
- Storage: Check that the uploaded media fits on the instance, with room for the operating system and any other files you need.
- Bandwidth: Estimate monthly egress from the outgoing bitrate and planned stream hours, then compare it with the selected plan’s current allowance. Include protocol overhead. The cited setup documentation does not establish a universal bitrate or current plan price.
2. Install OBS and FFmpeg
Follow Vultr’s Ubuntu streaming-server tutorial to install OBS Studio and FFmpeg. The documented workflow uses OBS; the available instructions do not provide a complete, supported FFmpeg command for arbitrary playlists or a ready-made headless service configuration. Do not assume the graphical OBS procedure is automatically a headless-server recipe.

3. Create the YouTube Live event and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream and retrieve the stream URL and stream key from its live setup.
- In OBS, configure the YouTube service and enter the URL and key as described in Vultr’s tutorial. Use the endpoint provided for your channel and chosen ingestion method; do not substitute an endpoint copied from an unrelated setup.
- Keep the stream key secret. It is a credential that lets an encoder publish to your channel. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
YouTube distinguishes a stream—the incoming audio/video feed and its settings—from a broadcast, the event or video viewers see. A stream can be reused for recurring broadcasts. The YouTube Live Streaming API also documents a scenario in which a 24/7 broadcast can coexist with a second broadcast using the same live feed; this is not a requirement for the single-broadcast setup described here. See YouTube Live Streaming API documentation.
4. Upload and loop the media in OBS
- Upload the video file or files from your computer to the Vultr instance. For continuous playback, Vultr’s Broadcaster guide advises keeping the source files on the server rather than depending on a local computer.
- In OBS, add the uploaded media as a source and enable its Loop option. The exact source configuration can vary by OBS version and how you have organized the media.
- Check OBS’s preview before going live. Confirm that both picture and audio are present and that the source repeats in the way you intend. If using more than one file, verify the order and transition behavior rather than assuming a single-file loop proves a playlist works.
- Start the broadcast only after the preview and YouTube event are ready. Observe the stream after startup to confirm YouTube is receiving it.
5. Choose an ingestion protocol
YouTube supports RTMP, RTMPS, HLS, and DASH for third-party ingestion. For the basic OBS workflow, use the YouTube service and stream details provided in the channel setup. Google’s RTMPS documentation states: “RTMPS is a regular RTMP (RealTime Messaging Protocol) video stream tunneled through an SSL connection.”

| Protocol family | Security and compatibility | Latency and use considerations |
|---|---|---|
| RTMP | Unencrypted transport; commonly supported by encoders. | YouTube lists it for normal through ultra-low latency use. |
| RTMPS | RTMP tunneled through SSL. Google’s documentation requires a valid RTMPS URL/path, port 443, and the server hostname for SNI authentication. | YouTube lists it for normal through ultra-low latency use. Prefer it when your encoder supports it and you can configure the exact endpoint and SNI details correctly. |
| HLS and DASH | YouTube describes these as encrypted ingestion options associated with advanced codecs. | They tend toward higher latency; use them only when your encoder supports the required workflow and their latency profile suits the stream. |
Protocol support and the correct ingest URL depend on the encoder, codec, resolution, and YouTube’s live setup. Obtain the current URL and key from the channel’s live setup or API response.
6. Configure recovery, firewalls, and monitoring
Reconnect behavior
Vultr’s OBS tutorial recommends configuring automatic reconnect. Set it in OBS’s streaming/reconnection settings, then observe a real startup and recovery rather than treating the setting as proof of uninterrupted service. The tutorial does not promise continuous availability.

Firewall exposure
A push encoder connects outbound to YouTube. You do not need to expose inbound RTMP port 1935 to YouTube for this basic push setup; that port is relevant to receiving RTMP input or operating an RTMP relay. Vultr Firewall Groups filter inbound traffic and can be attached to an instance. Restrict administrative access to trusted sources, and check both Vultr-level and Ubuntu host-level firewall rules if the server cannot connect. See Vultr Firewall Groups documentation.
Operational checks
- Monitor OBS CPU load and dropped frames; high CPU can cause dropped frames. Reduce output demands or increase compute if the encoder cannot keep up.
- Watch the instance’s bandwidth use against the plan allowance, especially over a full billing period.
- Check YouTube’s live status after startup and after any reconnect.
- If you add a startup or restart mechanism, validate it against your selected Ubuntu and OBS versions. The cited guides do not supply a tested systemd service definition for this workflow.
7. Keep the stream eligible and appropriate
A server can keep sending a video, but it cannot make that video eligible for YouTube Live or guarantee that a channel’s content complies with YouTube policies. Use media you have the rights to stream, including music and other embedded material, and review YouTube’s current Community Guidelines and monetization policies if monetization matters. Repeated or reused material may raise separate monetization questions even when you have permission to broadcast it. Check the current rules and your channel’s status before relying on a 24/7 loop.

Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| OBS will not connect to YouTube | Incorrect URL or key, wrong protocol endpoint, or outbound network restriction. | Retrieve the current stream details from YouTube Studio; verify the selected OBS service and that outbound traffic is permitted. For RTMPS, verify the URL/path, port 443, and SNI hostname. |
| Black video or no audio in preview | Source path, media selection, or audio routing is wrong. | Confirm the media exists on the server, the source points to it, and audio meters move. Test preview before broadcasting. |
| The video plays once and stops | Loop is not enabled on the media source, or the intended multi-file behavior is not configured. | Enable the source’s Loop option and test the repeat behavior. For a multi-file playlist, verify progression and looping with the actual source arrangement. |
| Dropped frames or unstable output | Encoding load, network conditions, or insufficient resources. | Monitor CPU and bandwidth; lower output demands or increase compute if encoding load is too high. Check the server’s network and YouTube ingest status. |
| It stops after a disconnect or reboot | OBS did not reconnect or restart as expected. | Review OBS automatic reconnect settings and supervise recovery. Any external startup/restart mechanism must be validated for the installed versions. |
| Connection fails after firewall changes | Outbound access or administrative rules are too restrictive, or an unnecessary inbound rule was added instead. | Check Vultr Firewall Groups and the host firewall. For a push stream, allow the required outbound connection; do not open inbound RTMP merely for YouTube ingestion. |
