Short answer: Wowza documents how to forward an already-live source to YouTube and separately documents file inputs and an always-on channel mode in Wowza Video Legacy. The available documentation does not confirm that a prerecorded file will loop or that a playlist will play continuously in that mode. So you can configure a documented Wowza-to-YouTube live relay, but you should not rely on Wowza alone for unattended 24/7 prerecorded playback until Wowza confirms the required playout setup.
First, identify which Wowza product you are using
“Wowza” can mean different products with different workflows. Wowza Streaming Engine is the route documented for forwarding an incoming live source to YouTube. Wowza Video Legacy documents file inputs and a 24×7 channel mode separately. These are not interchangeable procedures.

If your source is already live from a camera or encoder, use the Streaming Engine procedure below. If your source is an MP4 or other hosted file, treat Wowza Video Legacy’s file-input and 24×7 details as separate facts—not as proof that one file will loop into the other.

This procedure follows Wowza’s Streaming Engine guide, updated August 7, 2026. It forwards an active source; it does not configure file playout.

- Create the YouTube destination. In YouTube Studio, create a live stream and copy its Stream URL and stream key/name. Keep the key private: it authorizes delivery to your broadcast.
- Open or create a Live application. In Wowza Streaming Engine Manager, select an existing Live application or create one if needed.
- Add a target. In the application’s Stream Targets settings, add a target and choose YouTube Live.
- Enter the source and destination details. Set the incoming source stream name, YouTube destination host, destination application, and YouTube stream key. The destination application is the part that appears after the host in YouTube’s Stream URL. Use the default RTMP port, 1935, unless your configuration requires otherwise. Wowza says the destination application instance can be left blank.
- Enable the target service. Enable Stream Targets and the individual YouTube target. Restart the application or service if Wowza prompts you to do so.
- Start and verify the source. Start the incoming source stream. Check that Wowza reports the stream and target as active, then confirm that YouTube Live Control Room shows a preview before relying on the broadcast.
The incoming stream must include audio, according to Wowza’s guide. A video-only source may not satisfy the documented setup.
What Wowza Video Legacy documents for files and 24×7 channels
Wowza Video Legacy’s setup reference lists “Stream from File” inputs as publicly accessible MP3 or H.264-encoded MP4/FLV files reachable over HTTP, HTTPS, GS, or S3. The same reference identifies 24×7 as an always-on billing mode and defines its purpose as “always on, as opposed to a single live stream for a single event.” These statements do not document that the file repeats when it ends or that a playlist is supported.

The Legacy documentation also says a 24×7 stream continues until it is manually stopped or stopped by a schedule; it cannot be recorded, does not support 4K, and its billing mode cannot be changed after stream creation. These are Wowza Video Legacy details, not universal limits for every Wowza product or current plan. Check current Wowza documentation or support for availability and plan compatibility before deployment.
Configure the Wowza Video route to YouTube
Wowza’s YouTube-specific Wowza Video guide, updated February 24, 2025, documents sending a Wowza Video live stream to YouTube. It does not settle the missing file-looping step, so use it as destination setup guidance rather than a complete prerecorded 24/7 recipe.

- Create the live stream in YouTube Studio and copy the primary Stream URL and stream key.
- In Wowza Video, select the highest available output rendition for the stream.
- Add an external service and choose provider RTMP.
- Enter YouTube’s primary Stream URL and stream key. The guide also offers an optional backup URL for redundancy.
- Before production, confirm the stream appears in YouTube Live Control Room and check Wowza’s stream status.
Wowza’s 2025 guide says YouTube performs transcoding for this route. It lists a maximum output of 2160 (3840 × 2160) at 60 fps and an I-frame at least every two seconds, no more than four seconds apart. These are requirements stated in that guide, not a guarantee that they remain current: check YouTube’s current encoder settings before configuring a production stream.
Can Wowza loop a prerecorded video for YouTube?
The official documentation covered here confirms file input and a 24×7 channel mode separately, but does not verify how to connect them for continuous looping or playlist playback. It therefore does not support a reliable step-by-step claim that you can upload one file, select 24×7, and have it restart indefinitely. Ask Wowza support to confirm the current product, plan, input type, and exact playout or looping controls before building a channel around that behavior.

For a dependable 24/7 broadcast, the operational requirement is a source that keeps supplying video and audio after a file ends, plus a destination connection that recovers if it drops. Confirm both parts in a test broadcast and watch the transition at the end of a file; a successful initial preview alone does not demonstrate looping.

- YouTube shows no preview: Check that the source is running, the target is enabled, and the Stream URL, destination application, and stream key were copied into the correct fields. Verify the target status in Wowza.
- Wowza target is inactive: Confirm Stream Targets and the specific target are enabled. Complete any restart Wowza requests, then start or restart the incoming source.
- Video appears without sound or is rejected: Wowza’s Streaming Engine guide specifies that the source must include audio. Check the encoder’s audio output and confirm it reaches Wowza.
- The stream starts but stops when the file ends: The cited Wowza documentation does not establish automatic looping. Do not assume 24×7 channel mode restarts a file; confirm a supported playout method with Wowza.
- Resolution or frame-rate settings fail: Re-check YouTube’s current encoder requirements and Wowza’s available rendition settings. The 2160/60 fps and I-frame intervals above come from Wowza’s February 2025 guide and may change.
- A 24×7 option or feature is missing: The cited file and lifecycle details are from Wowza Video Legacy documentation. Confirm that the current product and plan expose the same feature before planning around it.
