You can run a radio-style YouTube feed from a DigitalOcean Droplet by encoding a continuous playlist on the server and sending it to YouTube with the stream’s ingestion details. YouTube treats the incoming feed (the live stream) separately from the viewer-facing event (the live broadcast), so configure both, then monitor the encoder, YouTube stream health and Droplet’s outbound transfer. This is an architecture and setup workflow—not a tested Droplet configuration or a guarantee of uninterrupted uptime.

How the 24/7 setup fits together

The Droplet runs an encoder that plays your audio playlist, optionally paired with a static image or visualizer, and sends the resulting audio/video feed to YouTube. YouTube calls that incoming feed a live stream; the event viewers watch is a live broadcast. They are distinct resources. YouTube documents 24/7 feeds as a use case and describes using a stream with an additional broadcast while an ongoing broadcast remains live. See YouTube’s guide to broadcasts and streams.

  1. Prepare the host: create and secure a Linux Droplet able to sustain the chosen encoder workload and network output.
  2. Prepare the YouTube destination: obtain the broadcast’s stream ingestion details from YouTube.
  3. Run the playlist encoder: continuously encode compatible audio/video and send it to the ingestion address, preferably over RTMPS.
  4. Connect and monitor: connect the incoming stream to the broadcast, check stream health, and track the Droplet’s transfer usage.

The exact encoder software, playlist format and Droplet size depend on your media and workload. The available platform guidance does not establish a universally adequate Droplet size or a tested minimum.

Secure the Droplet before sending a stream

DigitalOcean recommends a production setup that includes SSH-key access, a non-root user with sudo, monitoring, backups where appropriate, and a cloud firewall. Its baseline firewall approach restricts inbound traffic to SSH while allowing outbound connections. For this workflow, the encoder initiates an outbound connection to YouTube, so do not open inbound streaming ports unless your actual architecture needs them. Follow DigitalOcean’s recommended Droplet setup.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Use a Droplet that can keep the playlist and encoder running continuously at the chosen output settings. Check sustained CPU and memory use after starting the encoder; a server that can start a job is not necessarily one that can maintain it reliably. Choose monitoring and restart behavior deliberately. This workflow does not prescribe a particular Linux distribution, encoder command or process manager.

Configure YouTube’s stream and broadcast

Get the ingestion details

In YouTube’s live setup, create or select the broadcast and the live stream it will use. The YouTube LiveStreams resource includes the ingestion type, primary and backup ingestion addresses, stream name, resolution, frame rate and health status. Use the details YouTube supplies for the stream rather than guessing an endpoint. Treat the stream key/name as a secret: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to that destination. See the LiveStreams API reference.

Prefer RTMPS

RTMPS is RTMP carried over SSL. YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion guidance specifies a valid RTMPS endpoint and port 443 and recommends RTMPS as a secure option for low-latency streaming. Configure the encoder with the RTMPS address and stream key/name provided for your stream, and ensure the Droplet can make the outbound connection. Refer to YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion guide.

Connect the incoming feed to the viewer-facing event

Verify that the selected live broadcast is connected to the stream receiving the Droplet’s feed. Starting an encoder does not by itself confirm that the intended broadcast is live to viewers. Check the YouTube live control room’s preview and status before making the event public, and confirm the broadcast remains connected after any restart or reconnection.

Choose encoder settings for a radio playlist

YouTube’s encoder settings are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that every Droplet or media file will work at a given profile. Match settings to the actual video format, audio, network capacity and the current YouTube guidance. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 subject to format-specific constraints, up to 60 fps, and constant-bitrate encoding. Its current recommendations are in the YouTube live encoder settings.

Setting Guidance and practical choice
Video codec and transport Use RTMP/RTMPS ingestion; YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 with format-specific constraints. Confirm the selected combination against its current encoder guidance.
Bitrate mode Use constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube recommends. Set a bitrate that fits the selected resolution and frame rate in YouTube’s current table.
Keyframes YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed 4 seconds.
Stereo audio YouTube’s guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio and recommends stereo at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps.
5.1 audio YouTube lists AAC at 48 kHz and 384 kbps for 5.1 audio.
Frame rate YouTube’s guidance supports up to 60 fps. A still image or simple visualizer may not benefit from a high-motion profile; select a format that reflects the actual visuals.

For concrete H.264 examples, YouTube’s current table lists 720p at 30 or 60 fps at a recommended 8 Mbps, and 1080p at 30 fps at a recommended 14 Mbps. Those are YouTube recommendations for the listed profiles, not a claim that a lower bitrate is officially recommended for a static radio image. Do not assume that reducing motion means YouTube endorses a lower rate; consult its current table for the profile you choose.

Before leaving the feed unattended, test a representative section of the playlist with the actual audio and visuals. Confirm that audio stays present, levels are appropriate, the picture is valid, and YouTube reports healthy ingestion. Monitor the stream after launch rather than treating a successful initial connection as proof that the service will remain uninterrupted.

Check music rights before making the feed continuous

Confirm that you have rights to use each recording and composition in the exact way you plan to use it, including a continuous YouTube livestream. A general subscription to a music catalog does not, by itself, establish that its license covers livestreaming or how YouTube Content ID claims will be handled. Check the specific catalog’s terms and obtain clarification from the rights holder or provider if the scope is unclear. Do not put music on a 24/7 feed until the relevant rights are confirmed.

Estimate DigitalOcean transfer costs

A 24/7 stream sends data outbound for as long as it runs. Estimate monthly transfer from the encoder’s configured bitrate and operating time, then compare that projection with the pooled transfer allowance for your team’s current Droplet plans and other Droplets. There is no single allowance that applies to every Droplet or team.

DigitalOcean’s pricing documentation says inbound transfer is free, allowances are pooled across the team, and additional outbound transfer is $0.01 per GiB. The page’s pricing information was last verified on 2026-08-25; check the current plan and dashboard before budgeting. DigitalOcean says its transfer usage and projection dashboard updates daily. See Droplet pricing and transfer details.

Troubleshoot the common failure points

Symptom What to check Next step
YouTube receives no feed Confirm the encoder is running, the stream key/name and ingestion address match the selected YouTube stream, and the outbound RTMPS connection can reach the supplied endpoint on port 443. Correct the destination details or outbound network rule, restart the encoder, and check YouTube’s incoming stream status.
Feed arrives but the broadcast is not showing it Check that the viewer-facing broadcast is connected to the stream receiving the Droplet feed. Select or reconnect the intended stream in the live setup, then verify the preview and broadcast status.
YouTube reports an unhealthy stream Compare codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate mode, keyframe interval and audio settings with YouTube’s current encoder guidance. Correct incompatible settings and test again with representative media; use YouTube’s stream-health feedback to narrow the issue.
Audio or visuals stop or become irregular Check whether the playlist or source file reached its end, whether the encoder process stopped, and whether the Droplet is under sustained resource pressure. Verify playlist repeat behavior and process status, then inspect host monitoring before restarting the encoder.
Unexpected transfer charges or usage growth Compare the configured bitrate and hours streamed with the team’s pooled transfer allowance and other Droplet traffic. Review the DigitalOcean usage/projection dashboard, which updates daily, and revise the plan or output configuration if appropriate.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you would rather not maintain an encoder process on a Droplet, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded media from the cloud, so nothing has to stay running at home. It does not stream from a camera.

  • One flat price per slot for the uploaded quality, up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card; one free day per account.
  • Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot (pooled across active slots), 24/7 looping and playlists, and StreamNeo team support.

The Monthly option is $9.99 per month; the same product is included on every plan, with only the billing length changing. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
