Protect a Vultr YouTube streaming server by installing an SSH public key during deployment, allowing only the inbound ports its actual software needs, and sending the encoder’s YouTube feed over RTMPS. The right firewall rules depend on the topology: a machine that encodes locally and sends directly to YouTube usually does not need a public inbound RTMP port.
This guide uses Ubuntu with UFW for the server-side examples. It assumes the Vultr instance is a Linux host in a YouTube streaming workflow; identify whether it encodes, relays, or hosts a control panel before applying rules. Vultr’s OBS-on-Ubuntu guide is one deployment example, not a requirement that every stream be encoded on the server: Vultr’s OBS and Ubuntu streaming guide.
Decide what the Vultr instance actually does
Before changing firewall rules, write down the operating system, the software running on the instance, and which machine performs encoding. A local encoder that connects to YouTube is different from a server running an RTMP relay or web control panel. The required inbound ports follow the services you operate; there is no universal port list for every YouTube streaming setup.
- Local encoder sends to YouTube: SSH is the main inbound administrative service. The encoder initiates an outbound connection to YouTube, normally over RTMPS. Do not expose an inbound RTMP listener on Vultr unless the architecture specifically needs one.
- Vultr-hosted relay or ingest service: Identify that software’s listener and access requirements first. Allow only the ports and source ranges its documented configuration requires.
- Web control panel: Allow HTTP or HTTPS only if the instance actually serves the panel, and restrict administrative access where the software permits.
Keep the two network directions distinct: SSH is an inbound connection to administer the Vultr host; the YouTube RTMPS connection is generally outbound from the encoder. YouTube’s setup guidance does not imply that the Vultr host must accept inbound RTMP.

Set up SSH keys without risking an existing instance
Install the public key during deployment
Create an SSH key pair on the workstation you will use to administer the server, then add the public key during Vultr instance deployment when that option is available. Keep the private key on your trusted device and do not paste, upload, or publish it in a website, shared configuration, screenshot, or log. Vultr describes OpenSSH as the connection protocol used to access an instance and documents connecting with a selected private key: Vultr’s SSH connection guide.
Connect using the private key
From a terminal on the workstation, use the username and address appropriate to the deployed image. For an Ubuntu image, the command commonly takes this form:
ssh -i /path/to/private_key username@SERVER_IP
Replace /path/to/private_key, username, and SERVER_IP with the actual private-key path, login name, and instance address. Do not assume every image uses the same username. Confirm you can log in with the key before tightening firewall access or changing SSH settings.
Important: do not casually add a key after deployment in the console
Vultr warns that applying an SSH key through its console after deployment can reinstall the instance and wipe its data. Treat this as a destructive recovery or redeployment operation, not as a routine way to add a key to a running server. If an existing instance lacks key access, review Vultr’s documented recovery process and make a verified backup before choosing a reinstallation path.

Configure Ubuntu UFW with only necessary inbound access
UFW is Ubuntu’s uncomplicated firewall; these commands are specifically for Ubuntu systems where UFW is installed. Other operating systems use different tools, including firewalld, IPFW, pf, nftables, or Windows Firewall. Do not apply UFW commands to those systems. Vultr’s firewall quickstart explains the OS-specific tools and demonstrates allowing SSH before enabling a default-deny incoming policy: Vultr’s firewall quickstart.
Inspect before changing anything
Keep your current SSH session open, and have Vultr console or another recovery path available. Then inspect the rules and current status:
sudo ufw status verbose
Confirm the SSH port actually used by the instance and any existing application rules. The default SSH port is commonly 22, but administrators can change it. If SSH uses a different port, substitute that port in the allow rule below.
Allow SSH before enabling UFW
For SSH on the default port, add the rule first:
sudo ufw allow 22/tcp
If the server uses another SSH port, allow that TCP port instead. Do not enable UFW until the rule for the actual administrative port is in place; otherwise, you can cut off your remote access.

Set least-exposure defaults and add only required services
For a server whose needed inbound service is SSH, set incoming traffic to deny by default and outgoing traffic to allow, then enable the firewall:
sudo ufw default deny incoming
sudo ufw default allow outgoing
sudo ufw enable
sudo ufw status verbose
Review the resulting status and rules. Add an exception only for a service the stated architecture runs. For example, a host serving a public website may need HTTP and HTTPS rules; a relay may need its specific listener. A local encoder sending RTMPS directly to YouTube does not, by that fact alone, require inbound RTMP on the server.
Do not close the original SSH session until you have opened a second session and confirmed access still works. If the connection is lost, use Vultr console access to inspect or correct UFW rules. Vultr’s troubleshooting guidance covers firewall-related remote access failures: Vultr firewall troubleshooting.
Limit who can reach SSH when practical
If you administer the server from a stable, known public IP address, restrict the SSH allow rule to that source instead of allowing connections from every address. Vultr recommends trusted-IP restrictions for SSH in its Ubuntu UFW guidance: Vultr’s UFW guide for Ubuntu.

sudo ufw allow from YOUR_TRUSTED_PUBLIC_IP to any port 22 proto tcp
Replace YOUR_TRUSTED_PUBLIC_IP with the administrator’s public IP address. Before removing a broader SSH rule, test a new connection from the trusted address. A changing residential IP, mobile network, or travel can make a strict allowlist lock you out; keep console recovery available and update the allowlist deliberately when your source address changes.
Changing the SSH port is not a substitute for access controls
A non-default SSH port can reduce routine automated connection attempts, but it does not replace key authentication, source-IP restrictions, updates, or a restrictive firewall. If you choose to change the port, allow the new port in UFW before restarting the SSH service, test a fresh connection on the new port, and only then remove the old-port rule. Vultr’s production guidance treats a port change as one measure rather than a complete hardening solution: Vultr SSH production practices.

Use RTMPS where the encoder supports it. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP protected by TLS/SSL and directs streamers to copy the RTMPS URL and stream key from Live Control Room into the encoder: YouTube Help: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and locate the stream’s connection details.
- Copy the exact RTMPS server URL and the stream key shown there.
- Enter those values in the encoder’s YouTube or custom RTMPS destination settings.
- Run a test before the event and monitor stream health while live.
YouTube says port 443 can be specified if needed while troubleshooting SSL connectivity. Treat it as a connection troubleshooting option, not as a reason to open inbound port 443 on Vultr for a stream that only makes outbound connections.

Protect the stream key as a credential
YouTube states that stream keys are like the stream’s password and address: YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings. Avoid screenshots, public configuration files, shared documents, and logs that reveal the key. If you suspect it was exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement key before streaming.
Choose firewall rules according to the network path
| Choice | What it controls | Practical trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Ubuntu UFW on the host | Operating-system firewall rules for traffic reaching that instance | Configurable from the server, but an incorrect SSH rule can interrupt remote access; preserve a console recovery path. |
| Provider or network firewall | Rules configured outside the operating system, at the provider/network layer | Can add a separate access-control layer; the exact Vultr console behavior and rule scope depend on the provider feature and are not established here. Do not assume it replaces host firewall configuration. |
| SSH open to all source addresses | Allows connection attempts from any public source, subject to authentication | Simpler when the administrator’s address changes, but exposes the SSH service more broadly. |
| SSH restricted to trusted IPs | Allows SSH only from listed source addresses | Reduces exposure, but can block legitimate access after an IP change or while traveling unless rules and recovery access are maintained. |
| Encoder sends directly to YouTube over RTMPS | Outbound connection from the encoder to YouTube | Usually avoids opening a public streaming listener on Vultr when the Vultr instance is not acting as a relay. |
| Vultr-hosted relay or ingest service | Inbound connection to the specific relay service, plus its administrative access | Requires software-specific port and source decisions and adds operational complexity; open only the documented listener the chosen architecture needs. |
Troubleshoot access and streaming problems
SSH stops working after enabling UFW
The actual SSH port may not have been allowed, or a source-IP restriction may no longer match your current address. Use the Vultr console recovery path to inspect sudo ufw status numbered, correct the rule, and test a new SSH session before ending any working session.
The encoder cannot connect to YouTube
Check that the encoder uses the RTMPS URL and current stream key copied from Live Control Room, and verify the encoder supports RTMPS. If SSL connectivity remains a problem, YouTube identifies port 443 as an option to specify during troubleshooting. Confirm outbound connectivity from the encoder; adding an inbound RTMP rule to the Vultr host will not fix a direct encoder-to-YouTube connection.
The stream key may have leaked
Reset the key in Live Control Room, replace it in the encoder, and avoid retaining the old value in public files or logs. Do not continue broadcasting with a key believed to be exposed.

Firewall hardening does not guarantee video quality. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, testing before an event, and monitoring stream health; quality also depends on encoder configuration and available upload capacity: YouTube Help: encoder settings and stream health.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube channel that needs uploaded videos to loop continuously, StreamNeo is an alternative to maintaining an always-on computer or configuring a server for that playback task: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded-video playback, not a camera feed. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free day.
