Short answer: If you already own a suitable PC and can rely on its power and internet connection, using it is usually the simpler option—and may cost less. Google Cloud Compute Engine is useful when remote management or an existing cloud setup is worth the recurring VM, storage, and network charges, but it is not a turnkey YouTube encoder. Your actual costs and reliability depend on your hardware, electricity rate, cloud configuration, and connection.
What you are comparing
A spare PC runs encoder software at your home or office and sends the video to YouTube. Compute Engine runs a virtual machine (VM) in Google Cloud; you configure its operating system and encoder, then connect that encoder to YouTube. Neither option removes the need to set up the stream and monitor it.
Compute Engine is not the same as Google Cloud’s separate managed Live Stream API. The API has its own channel and output charges, which vary by resolution and codec. Do not treat its pricing as the price of a Compute Engine VM.
Compare the trade-offs
| Decision | Spare PC | Compute Engine VM |
|---|---|---|
| Initial hardware | No new purchase if you already have a suitable PC; otherwise include its purchase cost. | No local encoder PC is needed, though a device for setup and control is useful. |
| Recurring costs | Electricity, based on actual power draw and your tariff; include existing broadband and any backup-power costs. | VM runtime, plus applicable disk, image, and network charges. Region and configuration affect the total. |
| Setup and upkeep | Install and configure an encoder locally; plan for updates, unattended restarts, and monitoring. | Configure and maintain the VM and encoder remotely; plan for access, updates, restart behavior, and monitoring. |
| Encoding capacity | Depends on the PC’s CPU or GPU, encoder support, and chosen settings. | Depends on VM resources and whether its environment supports your intended encoder workflow. |
| Connectivity and failures | Depends on local upload capacity, ISP continuity, power, and PC hardware. | Depends on VM setup and cloud/network services; account for network charges and verify end-to-end ingestion. No uptime advantage is assumed here. |
| Likely fit | You have capable hardware, dependable local power and internet, and want a straightforward setup. | Remote management or an existing cloud workflow makes the VM useful enough to justify its recurring costs. |
This is a decision framework, not a measured price or reliability ranking. The right answer depends on your own hardware, location, configuration, and service requirements.

Work out the real cost
Estimate a PC’s electricity
Use this calculation:
Monthly electricity cost = average wall power in kW × hours in the billing period × electricity price per kWh.
For a 30-day month, use 720 hours. If you do not know the machine’s draw, measure it with a plug-in power meter while it is doing the actual streaming workload. An idle reading or the power supply’s nameplate rating may not represent continuous operating power. Add any relevant broadband or backup-power costs separately.

Estimate Compute Engine charges
Configure your intended region, machine type, disk or image, and expected network use in the Google Cloud pricing calculator. Check VM instance pricing and disk and image pricing for their billing details. The disk and image pricing page excludes VM instance and networking charges, so a disk figure alone is not a complete estimate. Avoid relying on one generic monthly total without specifying region, machine, disk, traffic, and any applicable discounts.
Configure the YouTube stream
- Enable live streaming if needed. YouTube says first-time live streaming may require enabling the feature in advance. Follow the encoder workflow in YouTube’s guide to creating a live stream with an encoder.
- Choose where the encoder runs. Install and configure encoder software on the spare PC, or configure it in your Compute Engine VM. Compute Engine does not supply a finished YouTube encoder setup.
- Connect to YouTube. Use the YouTube stream URL and stream key in the encoder. Treat the key as a secret: anyone with access to it may be able to connect to your stream. YouTube’s encoder guidance says it detects the encoder settings you choose.
- Set video and audio options for your actual output. YouTube’s current guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), AAC or MP3 audio, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube recommends a 14 Mbps video bitrate; that is a recommendation for that specific format, not a universal minimum. Check YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec.
- Verify the ingest path. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP over SSL. For custom encoder configurations, its developer guidance specifies a valid RTMPS ingestion endpoint on port 443 and use of the server hostname for SNI authentication. See Delivering Live YouTube Content via RTMPS.
- Allow upload headroom. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend upload capacity 20% above the combined primary and backup stream bitrates. A speed test alone does not establish that a connection will remain stable during a broadcast.
- Test and monitor. Preview the feed in YouTube Live Control Room, check stream health, and monitor audio and video. YouTube also recommends checking local archive files when recording locally; see YouTube’s streaming tips.
Plan around YouTube’s archive limit
A continuous broadcast is not guaranteed to become one complete YouTube archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If the archive matters, schedule shorter sessions and/or keep a local recording as a backup. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

Common problems and what to check
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Check that the encoder has the correct stream URL and current stream key, then verify the selected ingest protocol and endpoint.
- The stream reports connection or ingest trouble: Check upload capacity and stability against the primary and backup bitrates, confirm the encoder is using a supported configuration, and inspect Live Control Room stream health.
- Playback stutters or drops frames: Compare the encoder’s output settings with the PC or VM’s available encoding resources, then test a lower-demand configuration if necessary. The suitable change depends on the encoder and workload.
- A VM stops or the encoder does not return after a restart: Review VM state, encoder startup configuration, remote access, software updates, and billing/resource setup. Plan how you will detect and respond to an interruption.
- A long broadcast is missing from archives: Check whether it exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour archive threshold; use shorter sessions and local recording when a complete copy is important.
Or let it run in the cloud
If managing a PC or VM is the part you want to avoid, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing at home has to stay on; it loops uploaded video, not a live camera feed. It supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
