To compare them fairly, use the same YouTube Analytics metric, date range, currency, and comparison unit, then examine audience geography, ad delivery, revenue sources, monetization status, and music rights. YouTube’s public guidance defines the metrics but does not publish a controlled music-versus-ambient RPM benchmark.
What RPM measures—and what it does not
YouTube defines Revenue Per Mille (RPM) as the revenue you earn per 1,000 video views. It is calculated after YouTube’s revenue share and includes all views, including views that did not monetize. That makes RPM a creator-revenue measure, not a measure of what advertisers paid for each ad impression. YouTube’s explanation of ad revenue analytics sets out the distinction.
RPM can include revenue from ads, YouTube Premium, channel memberships, Super Chat, and Super Stickers. A change in the total therefore does not, by itself, reveal which revenue source changed. For a 24/7 stream, state whether you are looking at a particular stream/video, a whole channel, or a portfolio of streams; do not compare one level with another.
Keep RPM separate from CPM
CPM describes advertiser cost per 1,000 ad impressions before YouTube’s revenue share. Playback-based CPM is also an advertising metric, not the same as creator revenue per 1,000 views. RPM includes non-monetized views and other included revenue sources, so a higher RPM does not necessarily mean advertisers value that niche more. A fair music-versus-ambient comparison
- Choose the comparison unit. Decide whether you are comparing individual streams/videos, whole channels, or a portfolio. Keep that unit consistent throughout.
- Match the time window and currency. Compare the same dates for each stream and use the same reporting currency. Several matched periods are more informative than one unusually strong or weak week; disclose the periods and any known seasonality.
- Use the same RPM definition. Record YouTube’s RPM for both sides. Do not substitute CPM or playback-based CPM for one niche, or compare one stream’s RPM with another channel’s CPM.
- Capture the context alongside RPM. For each stream and period, note views and estimated revenue, plus monetized playbacks or ad impressions and revenue-source breakdowns where available. YouTube’s Analytics and Reporting API metric documentation describes the reporting context; the exact dimensions and metrics available depend on the report.
- Record audience and monetization conditions. Note audience geography, stream format, monetization status, and any known differences in ad availability. YouTube says a view may have no ad because of advertiser suitability, ad availability, targeting, geography, recent ad exposure, or Premium viewing. These factors can affect RPM without showing that music or ambient content is inherently more valuable.
- Check rights and revenue allocation. Review the stream’s copyright and Content ID status before explaining a difference as a niche effect. A matched music claim can affect whether ads run and who receives revenue.
- Describe the sample before drawing a conclusion. If you say one niche performed better, give the sample, timeframe, comparison unit, and controls. A result from your channels is evidence about those channels and periods—not a universal niche ranking.
Why a stream’s RPM can differ without a niche effect

Does ambient music earn more on YouTube?
The available official metric, reporting, rights, and policy guidance does not establish that ambient streams earn more—or less—than music streams. It also does not provide a typical dollar range for 24/7 streams in either niche. Avoid treating a creator anecdote or a single channel’s result as a general benchmark; without a described, comparable dataset, a claimed niche average is not supported.
For your own channels, report the observed RPM with its dates and comparison unit, then show the contextual measures that help explain it. A difference can be real for the streams you measured while still not demonstrating that the niche caused it.

Find RPM and revenue reporting in YouTube Analytics
Use YouTube Analytics to examine the reporting for the relevant video or channel, selecting the same dates and currency for each side. The exact report controls and available breakdowns can vary; YouTube’s Analytics overview explains the reporting environment. For programmatic analysis, consult the YouTube Analytics and Reporting API metrics. Keep a note of your selected metric, dates, currency, unit, and any context fields included so the comparison can be reproduced.
