To send a live encoder feed from a Google Cloud Compute Engine VM to YouTube, copy the event’s stream URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room, enter them in your encoder, configure a YouTube-supported video and audio format, then verify the VM’s outbound network path and test the whole pipeline before going public. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; Google Cloud’s published egress ceilings are not guarantees of sustained throughput.

What the ingest settings control

Ingest settings define what your encoder on the VM sends to YouTube: the destination URL, stream key, video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval. YouTube then transcodes the incoming live stream into playback formats for viewers, so the encoder’s outgoing settings do not dictate every viewer’s playback rendition.

A stream key is a credential. YouTube describes stream keys as the stream’s “password and address.” Keep the key private; if it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance and instructions for managing live stream settings.

Choose a protocol, codec, and keyframe interval

Use RTMPS when the encoder supports it

YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Select the RTMPS server URL supplied for your event in Live Control Room and enter it with the stream key in the encoder’s stream settings. Do not substitute an unrelated endpoint or expose the key in a public script, log, or screenshot.

Match the video codec to your encoder

YouTube’s encoder settings page lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video. Use a codec your encoder supports reliably in real time, and select its matching bitrate guidance rather than applying H.264 figures to a different codec. The same page lists AAC and MP3 audio. It documents frame rates up to 60 fps. Check the current YouTube settings for codec-specific and HDR requirements before relying on specialized configurations.

Set CBR and a two-second keyframe interval

For standard encoder-based streaming, use constant bitrate (CBR) and a keyframe interval of two seconds. YouTube says the interval should not exceed four seconds. This is an encoder setting, not a Google Cloud networking setting.

Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate

Start with the resolution and frame rate you intend to send, then choose the bitrate for that combination and codec. The figures below are YouTube’s listed recommended H.264 ingest rates; the help page also lists minimum rates and separate guidance for H.265 and AV1. Its publication year is not shown, so check the current page when configuring a production stream.

H.264 ingest format YouTube minimum YouTube recommended
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
2160p (4K) at 60 fps 14 Mbps 50 Mbps

YouTube recommends keeping 20% bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate. For example, a single stream configured at 17 Mbps needs at least 20.4 Mbps of sustained available upload capacity to leave that margin. This is a capacity target, not a guarantee that a VM or route will deliver it. If the VM sends multiple feeds, budget for their combined bitrates and headroom.

Upload capacity can be lower than download capacity. Test the outbound path from the VM rather than relying on a download-speed result or a published maximum alone. If the stream health is unstable, reduce the target bitrate or resolution and retest before increasing complexity.

Decide whether to let YouTube detect the format

YouTube automatically detects resolution and frame rate by default. If you need to set them manually, YouTube says to create a custom stream key and enable manual settings under stream resolution. The relevant labels can change, so follow the current controls in Live Control Room rather than assuming a setting appears identically in every account or workflow.

Choose manual values only when the encoder’s output is known and the workflow needs that control. Ensure the encoder actually sends the selected resolution and frame rate; a mismatch between configured expectations and the source can complicate diagnosis.

Prepare the Google Cloud VM’s outbound path

Confirm the VM has a route to the internet

A VM with an external IP can communicate with external systems. A VM without one needs another configured outbound path, such as Cloud NAT. Use the path intended for the deployment and verify it from the VM before the event.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check effective egress rules, not just defaults

Google Cloud’s default VPC firewall rules allow outbound connections and block incoming connections. Custom VPC rules or organization-level hierarchical firewall policies can change that behavior. Check the effective policy for the VM and confirm it permits outbound access to the selected YouTube ingest endpoint. Sending an outbound stream does not, by itself, require opening inbound ports.

Size the VM for encoding and sustained egress

Compute Engine bandwidth ceilings depend on machine type and routing. Google Cloud also documents per-flow constraints and project-level internet egress limits. These are limits under applicable conditions, not a promise that the encoder will sustain the same rate during a real stream. See Google Cloud’s VM network bandwidth documentation.

There is no universally correct machine type without knowing the resolution, codec, frame rate, encoder implementation, region, and redundancy needs. Confirm that the selected VM can encode the workload in real time, then test sustained outbound throughput under representative load and check applicable quotas. Do not choose a VM solely from a headline maximum network rate.

Set up and test the stream

  1. Create or select the live event. In YouTube Live Control Room, open the event’s stream settings and copy its stream URL and key. Treat the key as a password; reset it if it is exposed.
  2. Configure the encoder on the VM. Enter the event URL and key in the encoder’s streaming settings. Prefer RTMPS when supported, choose a supported codec, and set the resolution, frame rate, bitrate, CBR mode, and two-second keyframe interval appropriate to the stream.
  3. Verify network policy and routing. Confirm the VM has an external IP or an alternative outbound path such as Cloud NAT. Check effective VPC and organization-level egress rules. Do not open inbound ports just to send the stream.
  4. Run a representative private or unlisted test. Use comparable motion and audio to the intended broadcast. Confirm that YouTube receives the preview, stream-health indicators are acceptable, and the VM sustains both real-time encoding and the planned outbound rate.
  5. Monitor the live event. Watch YouTube’s stream-health messages while broadcasting. If the key may have been compromised, reset it in Live Control Room and replace it in the encoder.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely area to inspect What to do
YouTube does not receive the encoder feed Stream URL, key, route, or egress policy Recheck the event’s URL and key, confirm the VM has a working outbound route, and inspect effective VPC and organization firewall rules for blocked egress.
YouTube reports poor or unstable stream health Insufficient or inconsistent upload capacity Compare the configured total bitrate with sustained VM upload capacity, including YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Test again with a lower bitrate if needed.
The encoder cannot keep up in real time VM compute capacity or encoder configuration Check whether the chosen machine type and encoding implementation sustain the intended codec, resolution, and frame rate. Retest with a representative workload before the public event.
The stream format differs from the intended resolution or frame rate Automatic detection or manual stream-key settings Check whether YouTube is detecting the format automatically. If manual control is required, use a custom stream key and enable manual resolution settings, then verify the encoder output.
The stream key may have been exposed Credential security Reset the key in YouTube Live Control Room and update the encoder with the new key.

Copyright and live-content checks

Before broadcasting, confirm that you have the rights needed for the video, music, gameplay, and other material in the stream. A technically healthy ingest does not establish permission to use the content or guarantee that it complies with YouTube’s policies. Review YouTube’s current live-stream requirements and the rights for any third-party material, especially before making the event public or monetizing it.
