To stream several pre-recorded videos in sequence, run a playback process and encoder on a Hetzner server. The playback layer advances through your files; the encoder sends one continuous feed to the YouTube Live URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio. Use YouTube’s RTMPS ingest option, test your actual files and transitions, and keep the stream key secret.
How the setup works
The server needs to do two jobs: play the selected files in order and encode or pass that playback into a continuous live feed. The encoder then connects outbound to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room. The audience watches the YouTube stream; viewers’ playback traffic is not served from your Hetzner server.
- Prepare the media: Put the videos on the server and decide their order. Check each file’s container, video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, audio tracks, and timestamps. Differences between files can affect whether a sequence plays cleanly or needs re-encoding.
- Choose a playback/playlist layer: Configure software on the server to move from one selected file to the next while keeping output continuous. The right implementation depends on the media and whether you need seamless transitions. There is no single command that is safe to assume will work unchanged for every collection of files.
- Configure the encoder: Send the playback output to YouTube’s ingest URL using the stream key created for the event or stream in YouTube Studio.
- Test the whole chain: Preview the stream in Live Control Room and check video, audio, stream health, and transitions before relying on it for a long broadcast.
Create a YouTube Live stream and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Use the stream details shown there to configure your encoder.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: do not put it in a public repository, screenshot, or log. Anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Select the RTMPS URL supplied by YouTube rather than guessing an ingest endpoint. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts RTMP transport with TLS.
- If the key is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder configuration. If the encoder reports an SSL error, confirm that the URL starts with
rtmps, notrtmp. YouTube’s RTMPS help page also notes that specifying port 443 can resolve some SSL errors.
Keep credentials out of command histories and service logs where possible. Restrict access to the server and configuration files that contain the key.
Set video, audio, and keyframe parameters
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS and lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and frame rates up to 60 fps. Match output to the source and the encoder you are using; if the files differ, test whether your playback and encoding setup can keep output consistent.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Bitrate: Use YouTube’s recommendation for your selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. As one reference point, its H.264 recommendation for 1080p at 30 fps is 10 Mbps. This is a recommendation, not a guarantee that a particular source or network will work well at that rate.
- Audio: AAC or MP3 are listed options. Listen for gaps, clipping, or unexpected changes when the playlist moves between files.
- Health checks: Watch Live Control Room’s stream-health indicators and preview. A stable-looking encoder process alone does not establish that YouTube is receiving a healthy feed.
Do not copy a bitrate or format setting blindly from one video to another. A test using representative files is the practical way to find out whether the chosen settings and transitions work together.
Make the videos play in the intended order
The playlist or playback process—not YouTube—controls which local file plays next. Configure it to read the chosen files in order and provide a continuous output to the encoder. Whether a direct playlist is sufficient or the files need a common encoded output depends on their formats, dimensions, frame rates, audio streams, and timestamp behavior.

- Start with a short test sequence containing representative files, especially files with different formats or audio characteristics.
- Check that the second file begins when expected, the image remains correctly sized, and audio continues without a gap or drift.
- Watch the transition in YouTube’s preview, not only in the local playback process.
- Only schedule a longer broadcast after the full playback-to-encoder-to-YouTube path behaves as intended.
Because the exact media and encoder are installation-specific, a universal FFmpeg command cannot be responsibly prescribed here. Validate any command or playlist configuration against your own file properties and encoder version before using it for a long broadcast.
Check Hetzner networking and traffic
This workflow starts an outbound connection from the Hetzner server to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. It does not inherently require opening a public inbound streaming port. Hetzner Cloud Firewall documentation says inbound traffic is blocked and outbound traffic is permitted when no firewall rules are configured. If you add restrictive outbound rules, allow the connection to the selected YouTube ingest endpoint. Hetzner states that Cloud Firewalls have no charge.

Check the traffic allowance for the particular server type and location before planning a long stream. Hetzner’s traffic documentation lists 20 TB of included monthly traffic for CX, CPX, and CAX Cloud Servers in EU locations; US and Singapore allowances vary by plan and type. The cited traffic documentation was last changed on 2024-05-21, so verify the current allowance in the pricing view when choosing a server.
Estimate outbound transfer using your actual output bitrate and expected streaming hours. Do not count YouTube viewers’ playback as traffic delivered by the Hetzner machine.

Test, start, monitor, and end the broadcast
- Run a representative test: Check the complete sequence, audio continuity, transitions, YouTube preview, and stream-health indicators in Live Control Room.
- Confirm the watch page: Check that the event is accessible through its YouTube watch page before directing viewers to it.
- Monitor the live feed: Keep an eye on encoder status and YouTube’s audio/video health information. A server process can continue running even if the ingest connection or media playback has a problem.
- End deliberately: Stop sending content from the encoder and end the stream in Live Control Room as appropriate for your configuration. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume the same archive behavior for longer streams.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Encoder reports an SSL error | The endpoint may be using RTMP instead of RTMPS, or the connection may need port 443. | Copy the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room. If the issue remains, check YouTube’s RTMPS guidance about specifying port 443. |
| YouTube receives no feed | Incorrect stream URL or key, or outbound traffic is restricted. | Recheck the URL and key in Live Control Room and inspect any custom Hetzner egress rules to ensure they permit the ingest connection. |
| The first video works but the next does not | The playlist process may not advance as configured, or the next file may differ in a way the playback/encoding chain cannot handle. | Test the next file on its own, inspect its codecs, dimensions, frame rate, audio, and timestamps, then test the transition in the full chain. |
| Audio drops or changes at a boundary | The files may have different audio streams or timing, or the playback layer may not preserve continuous audio. | Listen to a representative transition locally and in YouTube preview; adjust the playback or encoding approach for the actual source files. |
| Keyframe or bitrate warnings | Output settings may not match YouTube’s recommendations for the selected format, resolution, and frame rate. | Check the encoder output, use the appropriate YouTube bitrate recommendation, and set a two-second keyframe frequency without exceeding four seconds. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube channel to loop uploaded videos without maintaining your own playback and encoder process on Hetzner, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot. If YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
Copyright and channel considerations
Only stream videos and music you have the rights or permission to use. A live format does not remove copyright obligations, and this technical workflow does not determine whether YouTube will allow, monetize, or archive a particular program. Review YouTube’s current rules for the material and channel you plan to use before scheduling a broadcast.
