You can run a continuous YouTube radio stream from a Google Cloud Compute Engine virtual machine (VM): run an encoder or playout application on the VM, then send its output to YouTube Live using the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. The VM can keep broadcasting while your own computer is off, but a single VM and encoder are not a guarantee of uninterrupted playback. Plan for monitoring, restart and reconnect procedures, rights clearance, and ongoing cloud costs.
How the setup works
The basic chain is prerecorded audio and any accompanying visuals, a playout application or encoder on a Compute Engine VM, and an RTMPS connection to YouTube Live. The VM runs the process that would otherwise run on a local computer. It must remain powered on, have adequate CPU and network capacity, and be configured to restart or reconnect when something fails.
- Prepare the program. Organize the audio and any visuals you have permission to broadcast. For a simple radio stream, a static image or modest visual loop can be sufficient; a camera or capture card is not required.
- Create a Compute Engine VM. Choose a suitable operating system, machine type, region, and disk for your playout software and media. Keep the machine type and available network bandwidth in mind when choosing encoding settings.
- Install and configure an encoder or playout application. Set it to play your program continuously and output a live stream. The exact application steps vary by software; use its documented Linux or other supported operating-system setup instructions.
- Create or select a YouTube live stream. In YouTube Studio / Live Control Room, obtain the stream URL and key, then enter them in the encoder. Check the preview and stream health before making the broadcast public.
- Keep it monitored. Configure the process to restart after failure, check both the VM process and YouTube’s stream health, and have a procedure to reconnect or restart the broadcast.
Google describes Compute Engine costs as a combination of virtual machines, networking, and storage; use its Compute Engine product and pricing information to understand the current billing model. Your choice of VM, region, disk, runtime, and traffic path affects the actual cost.
Configure YouTube and protect the stream key
YouTube’s stream settings guidance covers the stream URL and key, DVR, and auto-start and auto-stop options. Select the visibility and other options you intend to use in the current YouTube interface; do not assume every stream has the same settings.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Use RTMPS where supported. YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP for the connection to Google’s servers. See YouTube’s encoder setup and streaming recommendations.
- Treat the key as a credential. YouTube describes the stream key as like the stream’s password and address. Do not publish it in scripts, screenshots, or source repositories. Store it so only the encoder and authorized operators can access it. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder with the replacement.
- Decide on automatic start and stop deliberately. YouTube provides auto-start and auto-stop settings. Confirm their current state and behavior for your stream rather than relying on a default.
- Understand DVR’s role. DVR can allow viewers to pause and resume during a live stream; it does not replace recording or backup procedures on your side.
Choose encoder settings that can run continuously
YouTube’s recommendations are a baseline, not a promise that a particular VM will sustain every quality level. Its current guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video codecs, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed four seconds. Use the bitrate table in YouTube’s live encoder settings for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you choose instead of applying one bitrate to every setup.
- Match quality to the program. A static radio visual may not need high resolution or frame rate. Higher settings can demand more CPU and sustained network capacity without improving the audio experience.
- Check the VM’s capacity. Compute Engine’s outbound bandwidth limits vary by machine family, traffic path, and instance configuration. Consult Google’s network bandwidth documentation and leave practical headroom rather than treating a nominal bitrate as the only requirement.
- Test representative material. YouTube recommends testing the stream and monitoring its health. Test the actual audio, visual motion, and settings you plan to use; a brief test with a static screen may not reveal problems that appear during more demanding content.
- Watch for drift and discontinuities. Check that audio remains audible and synchronized, the playout advances as intended, and the preview does not freeze or disconnect.
Plan for failures instead of assuming 24/7 uptime
A process that runs for a long time can still fail because of an application crash, VM issue, network disruption, exhausted disk, or YouTube disconnect. Set up automatic process restart where your software and operating system support it, but do not treat a restart policy as full recovery: verify that the encoder reconnects and that YouTube resumes receiving the feed.

- Monitor YouTube’s stream health and preview, and investigate any interruption rather than assuming playback recovered.
- Keep a secure copy of the stream key and documented steps for replacing it in the encoder if YouTube resets it.
- Test your restart and reconnect procedure before depending on the stream. Know whether YouTube expects a new broadcast or can resume the existing setup in your configuration.
Google’s Compute Engine SLA distinguishes a single instance from instances deployed across multiple zones, and its applicability depends on the SLA terms and architecture. A multi-zone design may offer different resilience characteristics, but adds design and cost considerations; an SLA is not a guarantee that a particular YouTube broadcast will never be interrupted.
Google Cloud’s Live Stream API is a different, managed media-processing architecture, not a drop-in setting for a self-managed VM encoder. Its channel may be restarted after 24 hours in a streaming state other than stopped or stopping, according to the Live Stream API quotas and limits. It should not be presented as an eternal uninterrupted session.

Estimate Google Cloud costs and network capacity
Compute Engine pricing depends on the VM, storage, and networking choices. Estimate the specific machine type, region, disk, expected hours, and network path with Google’s pricing calculator before deploying; prices and applicable terms can change. A limited free tier is not, by itself, evidence that a 24/7 production setup will be free.
Google’s VPC pricing page lists transfer from Compute Engine to specific Google products, including YouTube, as no-charge under the stated pricing category. That narrow listing does not mean every stream-related transfer, destination, IP configuration, or service is free. Check the exact traffic category for your setup and the machine’s documented egress limits.

Clear music and broadcast rights
Being able to send a track to YouTube does not mean you have permission to broadcast it. You are responsible for establishing rights appropriate to the music, territories, platform, and use. YouTube for Artists advises: “If you’re planning on using copyright-protected music during your live stream, we recommend coordinating with your label or distributor to avoid any issues, such as copyright strikes.” That is general guidance, not a license or a ruling that a particular track is cleared. Review YouTube’s live-stream guidance for artists and obtain the permissions your use requires.
