Compare the same region, inputs, outputs, add-ons, and pipeline type under both options, and include the hours the channel is running without content. AWS’s published example shows how large the difference can be for one specific configuration; it is not a quote for your channel.
What changes between on-demand and reserved pricing?
MediaLive charges for running inputs, outputs, and add-on features. On-demand lets you pay hourly without a long-term commitment or upfront payment, while reserved pricing commits to usage for 12 months. Reservations apply to matching inputs, outputs, and add-ons rather than to a named channel, so a reservation helps only when your running resource mix matches what you committed to.

These pricing terms are described on AWS’s MediaLive pricing page. The 75% figure is a maximum advertised saving, not a guaranteed discount or a universal break-even point.
What AWS’s example does—and does not—tell you
AWS’s pricing page gives a single-pipeline example at $0.5566 per hour and $400.75 for 720 hours in a 30-day month under reserved pricing, compared with $1,702.94 on-demand for that same month. Those figures apply to the page’s described configuration, which includes specified inputs, AVC outputs, and advanced audio. They are AWS-published example values, not a personalized estimate or a price that applies to every MediaLive channel.

AWS says reserved pricing is relevant for channels running more than 180 hours a month. Treat that as guidance to investigate a reservation, not a guaranteed threshold at which every workload becomes cheaper. The sources do not establish a universal break-even hour for an always-on YouTube setup.
Why an always-on channel’s configuration matters
Match the actual resource mix
MediaLive pricing depends on the resources and settings in your workflow. Build the estimate around the region, pipeline type, number and type of inputs, output renditions, codecs, resolution, bitrate, frame rate, and add-ons you expect to run. AWS’s FAQ also describes input and output prices as scaling with codec, resolution, bitrate, and frame rate. Its definitions classify SD as below 1280×720, HD as 1280×720 through 1920×1080 inclusive, and UHD as above 1920×1080 through 4096×2160.

Account for pipeline type
A standard channel uses two pipelines in different Availability Zones; a single-pipeline channel uses one. The pricing example above is specifically a single-pipeline example. Do not compare it with a standard two-pipeline design as if the configurations were equivalent. Confirm which pipeline type your availability requirements call for, then price that same type under both billing options.
Count running time, including quiet periods
AWS states that a channel incurs costs while running even when its inputs receive no content and its outputs produce none. That makes idle time important for a continuous channel: include maintenance, testing, failover, and periods when the channel may be left running without content. AWS’s billing guide explains that charges depend on resource state and that an input can remain idle while a channel is not running. How to make a fair cost comparison
- Choose the region and design. Record the AWS region, single- or standard-pipeline type, input count and type, output ladder, codecs, resolution, bitrate, frame rate, and add-ons.
- Estimate monthly hours. Include planned streaming, maintenance, testing, failover, and any time a channel might remain running with no content. For on-demand, account for AWS’s nearest-minute rounding and 10-minute minimum for resource duration.
- Price equivalent resources both ways. Compare the same region and matching input, output, and add-on mix. A reservation is not attached to a channel name; its value depends on whether the resources you run match the committed resources.
- Include services beyond MediaLive when your workflow uses them. AWS’s live-streaming deployment guide lists MediaLive, MediaPackage, and CloudFront as separate components. Their costs depend on the architecture and assumptions; the guide’s example is not a YouTube quote.
- Check YouTube ingest compatibility separately. Verify the planned encoder output against YouTube’s current settings, then test the stream. Ingest compatibility does not determine whether a MediaLive reservation saves money.
Check YouTube’s ingest requirements before committing
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Its encoder guidance includes supported codecs and settings, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. It also gives bitrate ranges by resolution and frame rate. Check the current YouTube encoder settings and confirm that the specific MediaLive output configuration is accepted for your account and workflow; the available guidance does not establish acceptance for every combination.
YouTube advises testing before an event, monitoring stream health, and choosing a quality level that is reliable for the available connection. For encoder setup and starting a stream, see YouTube’s live-streaming instructions.

What the MediaLive price does not include
MediaLive is not necessarily the entire cost of delivering a live stream. Packaging, delivery, and data transfer can add separate charges depending on the architecture. AWS’s live-streaming deployment guide shows MediaLive, MediaPackage, and CloudFront as distinct components, but its example assumptions should not be treated as a cost estimate for your YouTube channel. Model only the services your workflow actually uses, and check for applicable idle-resource and data-transfer charges.
Is MediaLive the right way to keep a YouTube channel live?
MediaLive is an option when you need its configurable live-video processing and are prepared to estimate and manage AWS resources. If the goal is simply to keep uploaded videos looping as a 24/7 YouTube stream, compare that operational need with the cost and complexity of a managed cloud service before committing to a MediaLive design.
