You can use a Hetzner Cloud server and FFmpeg to broadcast a continuous sequence of local video files to YouTube Live. The files must be available to FFmpeg on the server or accessible storage, and you must configure the output to match the ingest method shown in YouTube Studio. A YouTube watch-page playlist URL is not an established or rights-cleared FFmpeg input for this workflow.

What this setup does—and does not do

FFmpeg reads media files you own or are licensed to rebroadcast, combines or loops them, and sends the resulting live broadcast to YouTube. The YouTube stream is the destination; the source is a local playlist or another FFmpeg-readable sequence of files. FFmpeg’s documentation describes playlist and muxer options, but the documentation cited here does not provide a complete, tested command for looping a concat playlist into YouTube Live. FFmpeg Formats Documentation

Do not treat a YouTube watch-page playlist URL as a supported input for this setup. Technical guidance on ingest and packaging does not grant permission to copy or rebroadcast videos found on YouTube. Use content you created or have permission to transmit; the cited sources do not settle the legal status of every possible use.

Plan the server and stream before starting

Choose the source and ingest protocol

Prepare the files on the server or on storage the server can access, and make an FFmpeg-readable sequence. Check that the installed FFmpeg build can read your files and that their video and audio formats are compatible with the destination’s current ingest requirements.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

In YouTube Studio’s live setup flow, choose an ingestion protocol and use the endpoint and stream key it provides. Keep the key private: do not publish it, expose it in screenshots, or include it in public logs. Follow the current setup screen rather than relying on a copied endpoint or settings that may have changed.

RTMP and HLS are distinct ingest choices, not interchangeable labels for the same output. YouTube says, “HLS has higher latency because it sends segments of video, instead of a continuous stream like RTMP.” Choose HLS when the format or protocol needs call for it; if your stream is compatible with RTMP and lower latency matters, compare that route with YouTube’s current requirements. Check HLS constraints if you select HLS

YouTube’s HLS guidance specifies segment duration between 1 and 4 seconds, MPEG-2 Transport Stream segments, no byte range, HTTPS POST/PUT, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. It also says encryption beyond HTTPS is unsupported by that guidance. These are YouTube’s requirements for its HLS ingest, not universal settings for every HLS output. FFmpeg’s HLS muxer options do not by themselves ensure YouTube will accept the broadcast. YouTube HLS setup requirements · FFmpeg format and muxer options

Estimate outgoing traffic

Hetzner Cloud bills outgoing traffic; its billing FAQ says overage is charged in blocks of 100 MB. Its 75% and 100% usage notifications are informational and do not cap or stop traffic. Estimate your monthly egress from the encoded bitrate, then check the included traffic and current overage terms for the specific server type and region you plan to use. Hetzner Cloud billing FAQ

As a rough planning calculation—not a published Hetzner statistic—monthly decimal GB ≈ encoded bitrate in megabits per second × 0.45 × 24 × 30. Refine this for protocol overhead, reconnects, and the billing period you will actually use. A higher output bitrate means more outgoing traffic, even when the source files are already stored on the server.

Allow for shared bandwidth and server availability limits

Hetzner says Cloud bandwidth is not guaranteed and that users can expect about 300–500 Mbit/s; the host connection is shared among instances. That is an expectation, not a per-server minimum or an assurance of uninterrupted streaming. Hetzner Cloud technical FAQ

Hetzner’s Cloud and vServer service agreement says it will use commercially reasonable efforts to ensure monthly availability of 99.9% for Cloud Servers, measured for each individual server during a calendar month. The agreement includes exclusions, including customer software or configuration failures and some network interruptions outside Hetzner’s reasonable control. This availability language applies to the Cloud Server, not to your FFmpeg process, YouTube ingest, or the end-to-end broadcast. Hetzner Cloud and vServer service agreement

Hetzner’s server overview distinguishes shared-resource and dedicated-resource types and notes that public connectivity requires a Primary IP. Compare current server, IP, and traffic costs for the region and server type you choose; the overview page states it was last changed on 2022-06-28, so do not rely on it for current prices. Build and launch the continuous broadcast

  1. Prepare authorized media. Upload the video files you own or are licensed to rebroadcast to the server, or make them accessible from it. Confirm the files are readable and arrange them in the sequence you want played.
  2. Create an FFmpeg-readable playlist or input sequence. Use FFmpeg’s documented formats and muxer behavior to build the source sequence. The exact playlist syntax depends on how your files are organized and what your installed FFmpeg build supports; the cited documentation does not establish one tested command that covers every looping playlist and YouTube ingest combination. FFmpeg Formats Documentation
  3. Set up YouTube Live. In YouTube Studio, create or open the live broadcast, select the ingest protocol, and retrieve the current endpoint and stream key. Choose RTMP or HLS based on your format and protocol needs, and apply the requirements shown by YouTube for that route.
  4. Configure FFmpeg for real-time output. Use the local playlist as the input, make the output run at real-time speed, and configure the muxer, codecs, and destination for the selected YouTube ingest protocol. FFmpeg’s general documentation covers its options, but there is no single command here that can be asserted as valid across different builds, source media, and current YouTube settings. FFmpeg Documentation
  5. Protect the stream key. Supply the key through a private configuration mechanism appropriate to your server environment. Avoid putting it in material that will be shared or in logs with public access.
  6. Run and supervise FFmpeg. Start the process and arrange operating-system service supervision or another monitoring-and-restart mechanism. A running FFmpeg process is not proof that YouTube is receiving a valid stream; the sources cited here do not verify a particular service unit or guarantee that a given command survives every failure.
  7. Verify the broadcast. Check FFmpeg logs, YouTube’s live status, server resource use, and outgoing traffic. Confirm the stream is being received and that the playlist advances as intended.

Keep it running and diagnose failures

A continuous stream depends on more than the FFmpeg command: the server must remain reachable, the files must stay accessible, the output must satisfy YouTube’s ingest requirements, and the process needs supervision. Use these checks to narrow down common failure patterns:

  • FFmpeg exits or stops advancing through files: check the process logs, playlist paths, file permissions, and whether each file is readable by the account running FFmpeg. Confirm the playlist and loop behavior match your installed FFmpeg build.
  • YouTube does not show an incoming stream: compare the destination and protocol configured in FFmpeg with the current YouTube Studio endpoint and ingest selection. Verify the stream key privately and review FFmpeg’s output for connection or muxer errors.
  • YouTube rejects or fails to process HLS: check the segment format and duration, transport, playlist behavior, and other requirements against YouTube’s current HLS guidance. A valid FFmpeg HLS output in general is not necessarily valid for YouTube ingest.
  • The stream disconnects or becomes unstable: examine server connectivity, FFmpeg logs, resource use, and YouTube’s live status. Hetzner’s bandwidth expectation is not guaranteed; check whether the selected server and region meet your actual workload.
  • Traffic approaches the plan allowance: compare the observed outgoing usage with the bitrate-based estimate and current plan terms. Hetzner’s usage alerts do not stop traffic or prevent overage.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is simply to keep a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos, StreamNeo is an alternative to operating FFmpeg on a server: it runs in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not broadcast a camera feed.

  • Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams as made, at one flat price per slot with no re-encoding or quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card, one free day per account.

One slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops, and support from the StreamNeo team. Every plan has the same product; only the billing length changes. Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for the service and plan details. Start your free first day on StreamNeo.
