There is no single reliable price for running AWS Elemental MediaLive continuously with one HD output and a looping YouTube playlist. The bill depends on your AWS Region, channel class, input and output settings, operating hours, and enabled features. AWS’s US East (N. Virginia) example lists $0.234 per hour for a specified HD AVC input and $0.88 per hour for a specified HD AVC output—$1.114 per hour combined under those example assumptions, not a quote for your setup. The playlist’s playback source is a separate, unresolved cost and workflow.
What does the AWS example cost?
AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS deployment guide gives these illustrative hourly figures for US East (N. Virginia):
| Component | Example configuration | Illustrative price |
|---|---|---|
| Input | HD AVC, 10–20 Mbps | $0.234 per hour |
| Output | One HD AVC output at 1280×720p or 1920×1080p | $0.88 per hour |
| Combined input and output | Those two example components | $1.114 per hour |
These values come from AWS’s pricing example, which assumes US East (N. Virginia), standard pricing without free-tier benefits or discounts, and the example’s stated media characteristics and deployment profile. They are useful as a transparent reference point, not as an exact quote for a one-output channel. See the AWS Live Streaming on AWS cost example.
Why “one HD output” is not enough to calculate your bill
MediaLive charges for configured inputs and outputs according to their characteristics and resource state. A usable estimate needs the complete configuration, not just output resolution.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Region: Pricing varies by AWS Region.
- Channel class: Standard channels use standard-class input and output rates; single-pipeline channels use single-pipeline rates.
- Input: Input type and settings—including codec, resolution, and bitrate—affect the rate. AWS bills according to specified input options, so an HD specification may be billed as HD even when the actual source is SD.
- Output: Codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and rate-control settings can affect output charges.
- Runtime and state: Charges depend on whether resources are running or idle, and on which inputs and outputs remain attached or configured.
- Optional features: Add-ons may have separate charges.
For a current price in your Region, use the AWS Elemental MediaLive pricing page with the exact configuration you expect to run.
What keeps billing when the channel is paused or stopped?
AWS’s billing rules distinguish running resources from idle ones; stopping a channel does not guarantee that every associated charge disappears.

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.

- For a running channel, AWS charges for each attached input, including one that is inactive or not currently receiving content, and for each configured output.
- A configured output can remain chargeable while paused.
- A non-running channel can incur idle channel charges for its inputs and outputs. Idle push inputs can also incur charges in specified cases; idle pull inputs do not.
- AWS states, “There is no channel charge for a running channel.” That does not mean a running channel is free: input, output, and applicable add-on charges still apply. See the MediaLive pricing documentation.
When estimating savings from stopping or pausing, account for the individual resource states rather than assuming the total falls to zero.
How the playlist changes the estimate
MediaLive’s documented workflow describes upstream content entering a MediaLive channel and then going to a downstream system. That makes playlist playback a separate architecture question: something must provide the looping source and connect it to MediaLive. The AWS pricing and workflow material cited here does not establish a YouTube playlist-looping method, identify source software, or state what that source would cost. Therefore, the illustrative input-plus-output total above is not an end-to-end price for a looping YouTube stream. Confirm the source workflow and its cost before treating any estimate as complete. Could a reservation lower the cost?
AWS offers reservations that may reduce processing rates for a matching configuration. They require a one-year commitment, are billed through monthly allocations, and unused minutes expire at the end of each month. Matching depends on settings such as Region, codec, resolution, bitrate range, and output frame-rate range. Compare the actual configuration and expected monthly operating time before counting a reservation as a saving. Details are in AWS’s MediaLive reservations documentation and reservation pricing documentation.
A practical way to build your estimate
- Choose the Region and channel class. Decide where the channel will run and whether you need standard or single-pipeline operation.
- Specify the source input. Record the input type, codec, resolution, and maximum bitrate; make the configured specification match the source and service configuration.
- Specify the output. Set the intended codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and rate control, then price that exact output.
- Set the run schedule. Estimate running hours and account separately for paused outputs, attached inactive inputs, and idle resources.
- Identify the playlist source. Determine what will play and loop the playlist, how it feeds MediaLive, and any related service or software cost. Do not treat the playlist as a built-in MediaLive feature or include an unverified source cost as zero.
- Add applicable features or reservations. Include add-ons that your workflow enables; evaluate a reservation only against its one-year commitment and expected usage.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a simpler alternative to assembling a MediaLive pipeline and a separate playlist source: upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It runs from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Your upload streams as made, at any quality up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
