The key is to size the instance for sustained encoding and outbound network traffic, then supervise and monitor the stream process. There is no verified one-size-fits-all instance size or FFmpeg command: confirm YouTube’s current encoder requirements and test your actual source, output and workload before leaving it unattended.
What “without a GPU” means
A GPU is not essential to software video encoding. AWS documentation for Amazon DCV says software encoding is used when a server has no GPU, which supports the general feasibility of CPU-based encoding—not a guarantee that a particular EC2 instance can encode your chosen video at a given resolution, frame rate or quality. AWS DCV server documentation
For a prerecorded loop, the CPU must encode the video continuously if you are using software encoding. The workload depends on the source, output settings and encoder preset. Test with the actual content and intended configuration; do not treat a successful short launch as proof that the instance can sustain the stream indefinitely.
Choose EC2 for sustained CPU and network capacity
Prefer predictable CPU performance
AWS recommends fixed-performance EC2 instances for applications that need consistent high CPU performance and lists video encoding as an example. Burstable T instances depend on CPU credits, so validate them carefully before relying on one for a continuous encoding workload. The cited AWS guidance does not establish a specific instance family or size for your stream. AWS EC2 burstable performance instances

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check the network profile, not just a headline maximum
EC2 network performance varies by instance type. Some types have baseline bandwidth with burst capability; an “up to” figure should not be treated as guaranteed sustained throughput. Compare the instance’s documented network characteristics with the stream’s continuous outbound bitrate, allowing headroom for protocol overhead and recovery. AWS EC2 instance network bandwidth
Test the complete workload
Run the intended source, encoder, output resolution and frame rate for an extended test while observing CPU utilization, encoder errors, dropped frames and network behavior. Check compatibility with the instance architecture and the software encoder you select. The consulted AWS material does not provide a benchmark that supports a universal instance-size recommendation or a cost comparison; operating cost also depends on region and instance choice.

Prepare the stream and confirm YouTube’s current requirements
Before building an encoder command, identify whether you are looping a prerecorded file, generating content or using another source. Then check current official YouTube Live documentation for the ingest endpoint and protocol, supported video and audio codecs, bitrate guidance, keyframe interval, stream-key setup and any applicable duration or continuous-broadcast rules. Those details are not established by the AWS sources cited here, so do not infer them from an AWS example.
- Use YouTube’s current requirements for the stream’s ingest settings; do not copy settings from another platform as if they were YouTube requirements.
- Keep the stream key private. Store it outside source code, restrict access to configuration files and avoid printing it in logs or shell history.
- Confirm you have the rights to stream the video and audio. A continuous broadcast does not make copyrighted material permissible, and YouTube’s monetization and reused-content decisions are separate from whether a stream can technically connect.
Build the EC2 workflow
- Choose an instance and region. Select an architecture compatible with your encoder, favor predictable CPU capacity for sustained software encoding, and review the instance’s network characteristics. Estimate ongoing outbound traffic from the configured bitrate plus overhead.
- Install and configure your encoder. Install a software encoder compatible with the instance operating system and architecture. Configure it only after checking YouTube’s current ingest and encoding requirements. There is no YouTube-ready FFmpeg command supported by the AWS sources cited here.
- Supply the source. Make the video or other input available to the instance and verify that the process can read it for the intended duration. For a loop, confirm the playback behavior at the end of the file rather than assuming the encoder will repeat it.
- Protect the stream key. Place the key in a restricted configuration or secret-management mechanism. Do not embed it in a public script or log output.
- Start a supervised process. Run the encoder under a service manager or process supervisor configured to restart it after failure. Set up logs and health checks, and alert on process exit, sustained CPU saturation and loss of connectivity. These are operational practices, not requirements attributed to AWS or YouTube.
- Test before leaving it unattended. Verify the live output in YouTube, inspect logs and resource use, and confirm that a restart recovers cleanly. Continue monitoring the real workload because a brief test may not reveal sustained CPU or network limits.
Do not substitute an AWS IVS example for YouTube settings
AWS IVS documentation includes an FFmpeg publishing example, but it is for IVS. Its endpoint and configuration are not YouTube requirements and should not be copied into a YouTube setup. AWS IVS streaming configuration

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | What to check | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| Encoder exits or the stream becomes unstable under load | Process logs, CPU saturation, source decoding and the selected instance’s sustained performance | Reproduce with the real source and settings; reduce the workload or choose an instance with more predictable CPU capacity. Configure supervised restart and alerting. |
| Stream disconnects or frames are lost while CPU is not saturated | Instance network profile, sustained outbound capacity, connectivity and configured bitrate | Compare actual traffic needs with the instance’s baseline characteristics and leave headroom. Do not rely on an “up to” network figure as a continuous guarantee. |
| YouTube does not accept the stream | Current YouTube ingest protocol and endpoint, encoder/audio requirements, bitrate and keyframe settings, and the stream key | Recheck YouTube’s official Live documentation and the key in YouTube Studio; AWS IVS settings do not establish YouTube compatibility. |
| The stream fails to resume after an encoder or connectivity failure | Supervisor restart behavior, error logs, network recovery and whether the encoder reconnects as configured | Test a controlled process restart and connectivity interruption before relying on unattended operation; alert on repeated failures. |
| The broadcast is blocked, claimed or not eligible for monetization | Rights to the video and audio, and YouTube’s current content and monetization policies | Use content you are authorized to broadcast and review YouTube’s policies. Technical uptime does not resolve copyright or reused-content issues. |
