Use the steps below to check the Ubuntu/OBS version pairing, install OBS, connect YouTube Live, and configure a stream. Vultr’s April 2025 guide is a practical baseline, not a guarantee that every instance or setting will perform well.
Check the Ubuntu release and OBS installation route first
OBS installation instructions depend on the Ubuntu release and the package source. Vultr’s guide, dated April 1, 2025, installs OBS from Ubuntu’s default repositories. That is a documented route, but the package version can differ by release and repository; a successful install does not prove that you have the newest OBS build.
The OBS Project’s download page presents its Ubuntu PPA instructions for Ubuntu 24.04 and newer. The OBS Project also announced on June 19, 2026 that the future OBS Studio 33 release would drop Ubuntu 24.04 support. The announcement describes a planned future release, not confirmation that OBS 33 is already released. Check the current OBS release notes and the instructions for your chosen Ubuntu version before deciding between the PPA, Ubuntu repositories, or another supported package route. OBS says Ubuntu 24.04 users who want future major/minor updates should consider upgrading to Ubuntu 26.04 or later, or switching to Flatpak.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:obsproject/obs-studio
sudo apt install obs-studio
Choose a Vultr instance and desktop environment
Vultr’s 2025 guide specifies a fresh Ubuntu Server with at least 2 virtual CPUs, 4 GB RAM, 80 GB storage, and 3 TB bandwidth. These are that guide’s deployment baseline, not independently tested performance guarantees. It recommends 720p (1280 × 720) with 2 or more vCPUs and cautions that higher resolutions and frame rates need more processing capacity.

OBS’s Linux requirements call for an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and an X window system or Wayland. A command-line-only Ubuntu server is not automatically ready to run OBS’s desktop workflow. Make sure your selected image and instance expose working graphics support, and install and access a graphical desktop session. Vultr’s tutorial uses remote desktop software such as VNC Viewer or NoMachine. OBS also notes that meeting its basic requirements does not guarantee successful streaming: CPU load depends on encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity.
See OBS system requirements. The OBS requirements page’s OpenGL figure is stated there; check the current requirements for your release rather than treating an older minimum as a forecast of future compatibility.

Install and open OBS over remote desktop
- Connect to the Ubuntu instance over SSH using the non-root sudo user configured for it. Apply system updates and install OBS using the route appropriate to your Ubuntu release.
- Install and configure a graphical desktop and remote desktop access. Follow Vultr’s desktop instructions for your Ubuntu image, then connect with a client such as VNC Viewer or NoMachine.
- Launch OBS from the desktop session. If it does not open, first confirm the desktop session is active and graphics support is available; installing the package alone does not create a display environment.
- Run the OBS auto-configuration wizard when prompted. Treat its result as a starting point, then check output resolution, frame rate, and encoder settings against your server’s capacity and YouTube’s current guidance.
Create a YouTube Live stream and connect its key
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and open its stream settings.
- Copy the stream key and keep it private. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your stream; if it is exposed, rotate it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube or YouTube Gaming as the service, and paste the key into the stream key field. Use the server option appropriate to the YouTube setup shown in the current OBS interface.
- Open Settings > Video to choose the output resolution and frame rate. Open Settings > Output to configure the encoder and bitrate. Match these to the stream’s intended resolution and frame rate and to YouTube’s current encoder recommendations.
- Use RTMPS where available; YouTube recommends this secure extension of RTMP. Start streaming in OBS, then verify the incoming preview and stream status in YouTube Studio before sharing the live link.
YouTube’s live encoder settings specify that the encoder should be configured for resolution, frame rate, and bitrate, and recommend RTMPS. Choose bitrate values from YouTube’s current table for your selected resolution and frame rate; do not assume a particular value will work on every Vultr instance or network path. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple viewing formats.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Copyright and channel-policy checks before going live
Only stream video and audio you have the rights to use. A stream key does not grant permission to broadcast music, gameplay, or other material. Review YouTube’s live-stream and copyright requirements for the content and territory involved, and confirm the stream’s visibility and audience settings in YouTube Studio before going live. OBS itself does not establish that a channel’s content complies with YouTube policies.

Troubleshoot common setup failures
- OBS installs, but no window appears: confirm that an X or Wayland desktop session is running and that the remote desktop connection is attached to that session. A headless server does not supply a graphical display merely because OBS is installed.
- OBS reports graphics or rendering problems: verify the instance/image exposes compatible OpenGL graphics and revisit the OBS Linux requirements. Vultr’s baseline resource figures alone do not confirm GPU or display compatibility.
- The package is missing or the version is unexpected: check which Ubuntu release you deployed and which repository supplied OBS. Compare the available package against the OBS Project’s current release guidance; do not treat the default-repository command as a guarantee of the latest version.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: check that the stream is created or scheduled in YouTube Studio, that OBS has the correct service and current stream key, and that the selected server and connection settings are valid. Rotate the key if there is any chance it was disclosed.
- The stream drops or becomes unstable: inspect OBS’s connection/status indicators and YouTube Studio’s incoming-stream status. Check CPU use, encoder settings, frame rate, resolution, and the instance’s available outbound bandwidth; reduce output demands if the instance cannot sustain them.
- Video is choppy or encoder load is high: lower resolution or frame rate and simplify scenes, then reassess. Vultr’s guide suggests 720p for its 2-or-more-vCPU baseline, but does not guarantee that setting will work for every scene or encoder.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded video playing on YouTube without maintaining an OBS desktop session on a Vultr server, StreamNeo is a different, cloud-based option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a camera feed. No computer or home connection has to stay on, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Each slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. Start your free day on StreamNeo.
