The AWS-documented host setup uses Amazon Linux 2023; the encoder image, EC2 capacity, and container command depend on your chosen software and workload.
Before you start: confirm YouTube access
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions during the previous 90 days, and says streamers must be at least 16. First-time live-streaming activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before planning a broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Copy the server URL and stream key for that specific stream. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your channel. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update your encoder.
Install Docker on Amazon Linux 2023

sudo usermod -a -G docker ec2-userLog out and reconnect after changing the ec2-user group membership. Check that the Docker client can reach the daemon:
docker infoIf Docker reports that the daemon is unreachable, confirm the service started. AWS notes that a reboot may be needed if the daemon remains inaccessible. Consult the current AWS Docker guidance because installation instructions can change.

Choose and run an encoder container
Docker on the host does not itself encode or stream video. You need a maintained container image containing an encoder that supports your input, output protocol, codec, resolution, and frame rate. The available AWS and YouTube guidance does not establish a particular image or tested Docker command, so check the image’s documentation for architecture support, required devices or libraries, persistence, and how it accepts stream credentials.
Do not put a live stream key in a public image or commit it to a source repository. Supply it through the encoder’s supported secret or environment configuration method, and limit access to the EC2 account and deployment files. The precise syntax depends on the selected image.

Connect the encoder to YouTube
- Use the stream’s own settings. In Live Control Room, copy the server URL and key belonging to the stream you created or scheduled.
- Prefer RTMPS when supported. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL. Choose the RTMPS URL displayed by YouTube rather than assuming the default RTMP endpoint is encrypted. Your encoder must support RTMPS. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
- Configure the encoder. Enter the copied URL and key in the encoder’s documented fields, then configure resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval. Keep the URL and key distinct; the server URL is not a substitute for the key.
- Start the container and inspect YouTube’s preview. For a scheduled event, start the encoder first and wait for the preview in Live Control Room, then start the live event there. For an immediate stream, YouTube’s encoder workflow is to start the encoder after entering the URL and key. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup steps.
YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. It automatically detects incoming settings and transcodes the feed into output formats, but you still need to configure the encoder’s source resolution, frame rate, and bitrate appropriately. Use the current YouTube recommendations for your selected resolution and codec rather than assuming one bitrate fits every stream; see encoder settings and bitrates.
Allow outbound connectivity and plan capacity
This workflow has the EC2 encoder initiate an outbound connection to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. Do not open a public inbound RTMP port merely because the protocol is called RTMP. Keep administrative access such as SSH restricted to trusted source addresses. The appropriate outbound network configuration depends on your instance and networking setup; the available guidance does not establish a complete security-group rule set for every deployment.

Estimate bandwidth from the combined bitrate of the stream’s audio and video. YouTube advises that total streaming bitrate must stay within available upload bandwidth and recommends 20% headroom. For example, if the combined stream bitrate is 10 Mb/s, plan for at least 12 Mb/s of sustained outbound capacity. This is a planning calculation, not a guarantee of EC2 throughput; the relevant capacity is the instance’s sustained outbound bandwidth, not a viewer’s download speed. There is no universally correct EC2 size or price for this task. CPU or GPU demand varies with the encoder, codec, resolution, frame rate, and whether the container encodes or merely forwards a pre-encoded feed; runtime and AWS region also affect cost. Test the actual workload before relying on it for a long event.

Test the stream before going live
- Use representative video movement and audio; a static test image may not reveal encoding or bandwidth problems.
- Check that YouTube receives the feed and displays the expected preview before starting a scheduled event.
- Confirm the watch page, audio, image, and stream health indicators, then monitor them during the broadcast.
- Prepare the encoder well ahead of the event. YouTube recommends testing and checking stream health; see its streaming tips.
Stopping the encoder ends its feed. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; see YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.
RTMP, RTMPS, and HLS: which ingest should you use?

Use the protocol supported by both the encoder and the stream configuration in Live Control Room. For an RTMPS SSL connection failure, first check that the endpoint actually begins with the RTMPS scheme and that the encoder supports it. YouTube’s RTMPS help page also suggests trying port 443.
Troubleshoot common failures
