Neither a Proxmox home server nor a VPS is automatically cheaper for a 24/7 YouTube stream. At home, the incremental cost depends on the host’s measured power draw, your electricity rate, and whether your internet connection can sustain the upload. A VPS gives you a recurring hosting bill, but its transfer allowance and compute capacity must fit the stream. Compare both using your actual encoder bitrate and costs—not the number of viewers.
What drives the cost of a 24/7 stream?
Your encoder sends one continuous stream to YouTube. YouTube then creates viewer-facing formats; you do not multiply your upload by your audience size. YouTube’s guidance says it automatically transcodes a live stream to create output formats for viewers across devices and networks (YouTube live encoder settings).
The major cost inputs are therefore the host, electricity, broadband or VPS transfer, and any hardware or maintenance costs. The two options also shift operational responsibilities differently: a home host depends on your local power, router, and ISP; with a VPS, the physical host and data-center network are provided by the vendor, while you still manage the guest operating system and encoder. The available figures do not establish a measured uptime advantage for either option.
Estimate the stream’s monthly upload
Use the encoder’s bitrate, not the combined playback quality delivered to viewers. At a constant bitrate, a 30-day month carries about 324 decimal GB per Mbps before protocol overhead. This is a calculation from bitrate and time, not a provider’s allowance figure.

Actual metered transfer can be higher because of protocol overhead and the provider’s accounting method. Check whether the provider counts decimal GB or binary GiB and whether its allowance is pooled. For a home stream, confirm that your ISP permits and can reliably sustain the continuous upload; an advertised upload speed alone does not guarantee a stable stream.
Compare the home-server and VPS costs
Proxmox host at home
If you already own a suitable machine and pay for broadband regardless, the incremental cash cost may be mainly electricity. Measure the host’s average wall draw while it runs the actual encoder. Do not use the processor’s rated TDP as a substitute for measured system power.
Calculate monthly energy as: average watts × hours running ÷ 1,000 = kWh. For a 30-day month, hours running is 720. Multiply the resulting kWh by your electricity tariff. Add any incremental internet cost, and, if you are buying equipment for the stream, account for purchase cost over a clearly stated useful life. UPS equipment, storage replacement, cooling, and repairs may also matter for your setup.

Separate sunk or household-baseline costs from costs caused by the stream. If your broadband and server would be running anyway, they are not necessarily new cash expenses; the additional electricity used to keep the encoder online still is.

DigitalOcean’s 2026 Basic Droplet pricing lists these examples. They are provider-listed configurations, not evidence that a plan has enough CPU or RAM for a particular OBS or FFmpeg workload.

DigitalOcean documents additional outbound Droplet transfer at $0.01/GiB; inbound transfer is free, and included outbound transfer depends on the plan and is pooled across a team. A 10 Mbps stream’s approximate 30-day upload of 3,240 decimal GB is already around 3,018 GiB, before overhead. That exceeds the listed transfer allowance of each example above if the full upload is metered against a single Droplet’s allowance. Hetzner’s European Cloud listing advertises up to 20 TB of included traffic on listed plans and hourly billing capped at a monthly price. The available listing does not provide a stable, fully comparable plan quote here; check the current plan, region, and terms at purchase time (Hetzner Cloud plans).
Choose encoder settings that match the cost estimate
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends H.264 at 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60, with constant bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval (YouTube live encoder settings). Those bitrates are the basis for the monthly transfer examples above; a higher chosen bitrate increases transfer proportionally.
- Set the encoder to a constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval.
- Use the bitrate appropriate to your selected resolution and frame rate; YouTube’s cited recommendations are 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60.
- Ensure the home connection has upload headroom beyond the encoder bitrate and test under the conditions in which the stream will run.
- Monitor YouTube stream health rather than assuming that a configured bitrate proves the connection is stable.
YouTube recommends testing before going live. For a secure ingest connection, Google describes RTMPS as RTMP tunneled through SSL and specifies port 443 (Google RTMPS ingestion guide). Use the stream key from YouTube’s live control room in your encoder or streaming service, and treat it as a secret: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel.

Check whether your server can encode the stream
A transfer allowance does not prove that a VPS can encode your chosen source at the required resolution and frame rate. The cited plan listings do not benchmark OBS or FFmpeg performance, and CPU needs depend on the source, codec, encoder settings, and whether hardware encoding is available. Confirm the provider’s current resource configuration and validate your specific workload before relying on a low-cost instance for continuous encoding.
On Proxmox, the same principle applies: the host must sustain the encoder workload while leaving enough resources for the hypervisor and any other guests. A setup that works in a short test may still need longer observation for thermal behavior, contention, storage issues, or network interruptions.

There is no defensible universal break-even price without your measured watts, electricity tariff, internet costs, chosen VPS region and plan, and stream settings. Put those values into a monthly comparison, and include one-time hardware costs only when they are genuinely part of the decision.

Troubleshooting cost and reliability assumptions
The VPS looks cheap, but the transfer allowance seems low
Recalculate using the actual encoder bitrate and the full number of streaming hours. Compare the result with the provider’s allowance in the provider’s units, then apply any overage charge. Do not use viewer counts or playback renditions to estimate encoder upload.
The home internet plan has enough advertised upload speed, but the stream is unstable
Test the sustained upload and watch YouTube’s stream health. Check for congestion, router or ISP interruptions, and other household traffic competing for upload capacity. YouTube recommends testing before the live stream; its guidance does not guarantee that a particular connection will remain reliable.
The low-cost VPS cannot maintain the target settings
Review CPU and memory use during the actual encode, then verify whether the chosen VM can handle the source and encoder settings. The listed price and transfer allowance alone are not a performance benchmark; consider a suitable instance or encoding arrangement rather than assuming the smallest plan is sufficient.

YouTube stops receiving the stream
Check the encoder or guest process, network path, stream key, and YouTube stream health. For a VPS, also inspect guest OS and service logs; for a home host, check power, router, ISP, and Proxmox guest status. Restarting an encoder may restore transmission, but it does not resolve an underlying interruption, so identify the cause before relying on an unattended setup.
Copyright and channel eligibility still apply
Hosting a stream continuously does not grant rights to the video or audio. Use material you own or are authorized to broadcast, and check YouTube’s rules for live streaming, copyright, and reused content before building a long-running channel around recordings. A technically stable encoder cannot prevent claims, restrictions, or channel-policy consequences.
