How to Add AAC Audio to a Silent Video for YouTube

Add an AAC track to a silent video in an editor, align the audio and picture, export and check the combined file, then upload it in YouTube Studio.

To add AAC audio to a silent video for a YouTube upload, import both files into a video editor, place the AAC track beneath the video, align their start and end points, and export a video file. Check that the exported file plays with sound and stays in sync before uploading it in YouTube Studio. YouTube recommends AAC-LC audio at 48 kHz for general uploads, but those are recommended settings—not a rule that every accepted video must use them. If by “streaming” you mean a live broadcast rather than uploading a finished video, see the distinction below: that uses a live encoder workflow.

What you need to do

YouTube needs a video file for this workflow. Add the separate AAC track to your existing video before uploading; uploading an AAC file alone will not create a standard YouTube video. YouTube’s supported-format guidance says audio files cannot be uploaded for that purpose, and its upload instructions direct creators to upload videos through YouTube Studio. YouTube’s supported file formats · Upload videos in YouTube Studio.

You will need the silent video, the AAC audio file you intend to use, and editing software that can import both and export a video. The precise buttons vary by software, but YouTube’s audio troubleshooting guidance likewise recommends editing the audio and video tracks before upload. Confirm that you have permission to publish the audio: its AAC format does not grant usage rights.

How to add the AAC track and export

  1. Open both files in a video editor. Create a project that matches the video’s intended orientation, resolution, and frame rate. Import the video and AAC file.
  2. Put the video and audio on the timeline. Place the AAC file on an audio track beneath the video. Align the track’s start with the intended point in the picture. If the audio should cover the whole video, adjust the edit so the audio and video end together. YouTube warns that tracks with different durations may not sync correctly.
  3. Preview the timeline. Listen and watch at the start, somewhere in the middle, and near the end. Check that speech, music, or other sounds match the picture; look for silence, clipping, or a track that ends too early. These checks can catch timing or export problems before you upload.
  4. Export a video file. For a conventional MP4 export, YouTube’s general recommended configuration includes H.264 video and AAC-LC audio at 48 kHz. Preserve the source frame rate where possible; YouTube recommends uploading at the frame rate used to record the content. Recommendations are not guarantees of acceptance, and YouTube supports other formats and codecs.
  5. Check the exported file locally. Play it from beginning to end, confirm that it has sound and remains in sync, and, if possible, listen on a phone as well. Then upload the exported video file in YouTube Studio. YouTube converts uploaded videos for playback at the highest available resolution.

Which export audio settings should you use?

YouTube’s general upload encoding recommendations list AAC-LC, a 48 kHz sample rate, and different recommended bitrates depending on channel layout. Its troubleshooting guidance separately lists AAC-LC at 128–256 kbps and 44.1 or 48 kHz among audio settings to check when resolving upload problems. Treat the figures as platform guidance for their stated contexts, not universal minimums or a promise that one preset suits every project.

Setting YouTube guidance How to use it
Audio codec AAC-LC is listed in the general recommended upload settings and troubleshooting guidance. Choose AAC-LC for a conventional MP4 export if your editor offers the setting.
Sample rate The general upload recommendations list 48 kHz. Troubleshooting guidance lists 44.1 or 48 kHz. Use 48 kHz for a new export following the general recommendation; if diagnosing an existing file, also check the settings in YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance.
Stereo audio bitrate 384 kbps in the general recommended upload settings; 128–256 kbps in troubleshooting guidance. These are recommendations in different YouTube help contexts, not a universal minimum. Use your editor’s AAC-LC export controls and check the resulting file.
5.1 audio bitrate 512 kbps in the general recommended upload settings. Relevant to a 5.1 export, not a requirement for ordinary stereo audio.
Audio channels The general recommendations list stereo, stereo plus 5.1, or stereo plus Eclipsa Audio. Choose the layout appropriate to your mix and project; do not select a multichannel option unless the source and export support it.
Video in MP4 H.264 is included in YouTube’s recommended configuration. Pair H.264 video with AAC-LC audio for a conventional MP4 export.

See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings for its general recommendations and audio or video upload troubleshooting for its troubleshooting guidance.

Fix common audio and sync problems

  • The uploaded video has no sound. Play the exported file on your device before uploading again. Confirm that the editor included an audio stream in the export and that the export preset did not mute or omit the audio track.
  • The sound starts late, drifts, or ends before the picture. Check the audio’s timeline position and compare the audio and video durations. Adjust the edit so the tracks match, then export and preview the new file. YouTube identifies differing track lengths as a possible cause of sync problems.
  • Audio sounds weak or disappears on a phone. Check the mix in mono as well as stereo. YouTube warns that stereo-to-mono conversion on a phone with one speaker can reduce quality or mute audio when a mix has poor mono compatibility. Review the mix for phase-related cancellation and make it work in mono.
  • The upload or playback differs from the export. Confirm that you uploaded the combined video file—not the AAC track by itself—and check the exported file’s audio and video settings against YouTube’s guidance. YouTube processes uploaded video for playback at the highest available resolution.

If you mean YouTube Live, not an upload

Adding AAC audio to a finished video file and broadcasting live are different tasks. The workflow above creates a video file for YouTube Studio. A live broadcast instead requires configuring an encoder to send a live stream; YouTube documents the relevant encoder settings separately in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. Do not assume that an upload export preset is a complete live encoder setup.
