Neither MediaPackage v1 nor v2 has a listed 24-hour maximum runtime for a live channel. The often-misread limit is maximum live manifest length: AWS publishes an adjustable default of 5 minutes for v1 and 15 minutes for v2. That rolling-playlist limit is not a requirement to stop a channel after that many minutes—or after 24 hours. Identify which generation you use, then check the actual quota for your AWS account and Region before designing the stream.
What are the AWS Elemental MediaPackage limits for a 24/7 YouTube channel?
AWS publishes different live quotas for MediaPackage v1 and v2. The figures below are from Amazon Web Services documentation accessed in 2026; AWS’s online quota pages do not state a publication year, and the values may change. Adjustable defaults may differ in your account, so check the relevant Region’s actual quota in AWS Service Quotas or the applicable AWS console.
“Adjustable default” means the published quota is a default that may be eligible for an increase. “Hard limit” means AWS lists it as non-adjustable. A quota ceiling is not a guarantee that a particular architecture will serve a particular audience or run without interruption.
MediaPackage v1 live quotas
| Limit | Published value | Quota type and scope |
|---|---|---|
| Channels | 30 | Adjustable default per Region/account; the v1 user guide calls this “Maximum Channels.” |
| Endpoints | 10 per channel | Adjustable; count applies to each channel. |
| Maximum live manifest length | 5 minutes | Adjustable. |
| Concurrent harvest jobs | 10 | Adjustable. |
| Ingest streams | 20 per channel | Hard limit. |
| Tracks | 10 per ingest stream | Hard limit. |
| Maximum content age for time-shifted viewing | 336 hours (14 days) | Hard limit. |
| Maximum time-shifted manifest length | 24 hours | Hard limit. |
| Maximum live-to-VOD manifest length | 24 hours | Hard limit. |
| Input requests | 50 per second per channel | Hard limit. |
| Media-segment output requests | 300 per second per endpoint | Hard limit; AWS describes this as indicative under typical CDN use, and abnormal request patterns can reduce it. |
| Manifest output requests | 5,000 per second per endpoint | Hard limit; AWS describes this as indicative under typical CDN use, and abnormal request patterns can reduce it. |
| REST API request rate | 5 requests per second steady state; 50 per second burst | Hard limits. |
MediaPackage v2 live quotas
| Limit | Published value | Quota type and scope |
|---|---|---|
| Channel groups | 3 per account | Adjustable default. |
| Channels | 10 per channel group | Adjustable default. |
| Channels | 20 per channel group | Hard limit. |
| Endpoints | 10 per channel | Adjustable default; count applies to each channel. |
| Maximum live manifest length | 15 minutes | Adjustable default. |
| Manifests | 25 per origin endpoint | Adjustable default. |
| Active harvest jobs | 10 per channel group | Adjustable default. |
| Maximum content age for time-shifted viewing | 336 hours (14 days) | Hard limit. |
| Maximum time-shifted manifest length | 24 hours | Hard limit. |
| Tracks | 10 per ingest stream | Hard limit. |
| Input requests | 200 per second per channel | Hard limit. |
| Media-segment output requests | 500 per second per endpoint | Hard limit; AWS says the figure is indicative under typical CDN use and abnormal request patterns may reduce it. |
| Manifest output requests | 10,000 per second per endpoint | Hard limit; AWS says the figure is indicative under typical CDN use and abnormal request patterns may reduce it. |
| REST API request rate | 5 requests per second steady state; 50 per second burst | Hard limits. |
What is the maximum live manifest length in MediaPackage?
The published adjustable default is 5 minutes in v1 and 15 minutes in v2. A live manifest is a rolling list of media segments available to a player or downstream service; its maximum length is not the maximum duration of the live channel itself. Do not confuse it with the separate hard limit of 24 hours for a time-shifted manifest, or the 336-hour maximum content age for time-shifted viewing. Those limits describe time-shift behavior and retention, not a scheduled shutdown after a day.

For an always-on design, verify the manifest quota for your generation and the behavior of the full pipeline. The quota table alone does not establish that your encoder, packaging configuration, downstream delivery, or YouTube ingest path can sustain the intended operation.
What is the difference between MediaPackage v1 and v2 quotas?
The account and resource hierarchy differs. V1 lists a 30-channel adjustable default per Region/account. V2 instead organizes channels into channel groups, with adjustable defaults of 3 groups per account and 10 channels per group, plus a hard ceiling of 20 channels per group. Do not treat the v1 channel count as a v2 account-wide quota.

The adjustable default for maximum live manifest length also differs: 5 minutes for v1 versus 15 minutes for v2. Other limits differ too, including input requests per channel and endpoint output request rates. Confirm the service generation shown in your AWS setup before applying a number from either table.
How to check the quota that applies to your channel
- Identify the MediaPackage generation. Check whether your workflow uses v1 or v2; the quota structure and live manifest default are not interchangeable.
- Select the Region where the channel runs. AWS quotas can be Region-specific. Review the quota in the same Region as the MediaPackage resources.
- Check the account’s actual values. Compare the relevant channel, endpoint, manifest, job, and request-rate quotas with the published AWS defaults. The actual account value is what governs your deployment.
- Request an increase only for an adjustable quota. Use AWS Service Quotas where the quota is available for adjustment. A published adjustable default is not necessarily your current account value.
- Design around hard limits. AWS identifies ingest stream counts, tracks, time-shift limits, and request rates as hard limits in the tables above; do not plan on raising them by submitting a quota request.
- Model endpoint traffic, not just viewer count. Estimate media-segment and manifest requests at each endpoint and account for your CDN and request patterns. AWS warns that the listed endpoint rates are indicative under typical CDN use and can be lower with misconfiguration or abnormal unique headers or query strings.
Can I send a MediaPackage HLS endpoint directly to YouTube Live?
Do not assume so. MediaPackage is a live packaging and origin service: an upstream encoder sends it a stream, and MediaPackage exposes packaged output through origin endpoints for players or downstream CDNs. AWS describes MediaLive as one example of an upstream encoder and CloudFront as a downstream CDN. A MediaPackage playback URL is not automatically a YouTube ingest feed.

YouTube expects an encoder ingest workflow. Its common guidance recommends RTMPS, which YouTube describes as a secure extension to RTMP. YouTube also documents HLS ingestion, but that is a distinct output workflow. Before using HLS, verify that the encoder or bridge can send YouTube’s required format and request behavior.
RTMP or RTMPS ingest
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS for its common ingest workflow. The encoder or bridge in your architecture must be configured to send to YouTube’s ingest destination; a MediaPackage origin endpoint does not itself perform that relay. See YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

HLS ingest
YouTube’s documented HLS ingest requires TS segments, segment durations between 1 and 4 seconds, HTTPS POST/PUT requests, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends video segments. Confirm the bridge can meet these conditions rather than assuming any HLS playback endpoint is compatible. See YouTube Help’s encoder guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Plan the complete 24/7 path, not only the quota
A working design needs an explicit path from content source to YouTube ingest. MediaPackage accepts streams from upstream encoders, packages them, and serves output through endpoints; it is not, by itself, a complete source-to-YouTube workflow. Draw and validate each connection: source or encoder, any processing or packaging stage, any required bridge, and the configured YouTube ingest destination.

- Verify that the encoder can supply the required input format and remains active for the intended schedule.
- Confirm which service receives the encoder feed and which endpoint or output the next stage consumes.
- Test the bridge’s protocol, segment format, playlist behavior, latency, and reconnect handling against YouTube’s ingest requirements.
- Check endpoint request rates and downstream CDN behavior at the expected scale; MediaPackage quota ceilings are not a forecast of viewer capacity.
- Validate a full end-to-end stream before relying on it as an always-on channel.
What the limits mean for a gaming channel
For a 24/7 gaming stream built from scheduled or prerecorded gameplay, the MediaPackage limits answer capacity and packaging questions, not YouTube’s content-policy questions. Ensure you have the rights to the gameplay footage, music, overlays, and other material, and review YouTube’s copyright and monetization rules. Continuous availability does not make reused content original, licensed, or eligible for monetization.
Plan the actual source and relay architecture as carefully as the quota. A continuously available MediaPackage endpoint does not establish that an encoder is producing content or that YouTube is receiving it.
