Add MediaLive when you need to ingest and transcode live input; use MediaPackage when you need to package encoder output behind playback endpoints. These services solve different parts of the workflow.
Choose the AWS service that matches the job
“Channel” refers to different resources in AWS Media Services. For a virtual linear channel assembled from existing assets, the central resource is a MediaTailor channel assembly channel. It puts source manifests into a live, sliding presentation; the origin continues serving the underlying media segments.
| Service | Role | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| MediaTailor channel assembly | Schedules VOD or live source manifests into a linear presentation. It can support ad breaks and personalized ad insertion. | You want to create a scheduled channel from content already available at an origin. |
| MediaLive | Ingests and transcodes input content, then packages the new content into outputs. | Your workflow needs live ingestion or encoding/transcoding. |
| MediaPackage | Receives encoder streams and packages content for downstream playback requests through origin endpoints. | You need an origin and playback packaging layer for encoder output. |
A MediaLive channel and a MediaPackage channel are not the same object as a MediaTailor channel assembly channel. In a live workflow, MediaLive handles ingest and encoding, MediaPackage can package its output, and MediaTailor can assemble source manifests into a scheduled presentation where that is needed.
What you need before creating the channel
- An origin: MediaTailor needs a source location URL. AWS lists Amazon S3, a web server, a CDN, and a packaging origin such as MediaPackage as possible locations.
- Playable source assets: Prepare VOD manifests and the associated media at the origin. MediaTailor assembles the presentation from manifests; it does not replace the origin that serves the media segments.
- Compatible package configuration: Decide whether the output will be HLS or DASH, then make each VOD source group’s package configuration match the channel output format.
- Optional ad slate: If a scheduled break needs slate content, have a VOD slate available. Personalized ad insertion requires the relevant MediaTailor ad-insertion setup.
Create and start a VOD-led channel
- Configure the source location. In MediaTailor, identify the origin URL where the source manifests can be retrieved. Confirm that the origin serves the assets needed by those manifests.
- Register VOD sources and package configurations. Add each asset as a VOD source, such as a movie, episode, or clip. Configure a package format and source group that matches the output format you intend to use; AWS documents HLS and DASH outputs.
- Create a channel output. Choose the playback mode and set a unique manifest name, output format, and compatible source group. Set the manifest window between 30 and 3,600 seconds, the minimum and maximum in AWS’s console setup instructions. Set the channel policy according to who should be able to request playback. AWS’s procedure specifies a public policy when using MediaTailor ad insertion.
- Build the schedule. Add VOD or live sources as programs in the order you want them to play. For an optional break, a program can specify a VOD slate; personalized insertion can use MediaTailor ad insertion.
- Start the channel. A newly created channel is stopped. Start it before testing; AWS warns that playback requests made before activation can return an HTTP 4xx response.
- Test the output playback URL. Open the channel output’s playback URL and confirm that the presentation appears and advances through the schedule as expected.
When a live source needs encoding or packaging
If the source is a live feed rather than an already prepared VOD asset, first determine whether it needs encoding. MediaLive ingests and transcodes source content into outputs. If those outputs need an origin and packaging for playback requests, MediaPackage can receive the encoder streams and provide playback endpoints. MediaTailor channel assembly is for arranging source manifests into a linear presentation; it is not a substitute for a required live encoder.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Keep the responsibilities distinct: ingest and transcode with MediaLive when required, package encoder output with MediaPackage when required, and use MediaTailor to assemble a schedule from source manifests. The appropriate combination depends on the inputs and playback architecture; there is no single setup established as best for every channel.
Cost and stopping an idle channel
AWS’s getting-started tutorial lists a channel charge of $0.10 per active channel hour and says inactive channels are not charged. This is the tutorial’s channel fee, not a full workflow estimate: origin storage, encoding, CDN delivery, and ad services can add costs. Stop a channel when it is idle, and check current AWS pricing for the services and region in your own design before estimating a total.

Troubleshooting common setup problems
- Playback returns HTTP 4xx just after creation: The channel may still be stopped. Start it, then request the playback URL again.
- An output cannot use a source: Check that the source group’s package configuration matches the channel output format, such as HLS or DASH.
- The schedule does not play the expected asset: Verify the program order and that the registered source manifest and origin URL point to the intended content.
- Underlying media fails even though a manifest is assembled: Check the origin’s ability to serve the media segments referenced by the manifest. MediaTailor assembles the presentation; the origin serves the segments.
- Ad insertion does not work as expected: Review the channel playback policy; AWS’s procedure calls for a public policy for MediaTailor ad insertion. Also check that the ad-break or slate configuration is present.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your actual goal is to keep a prerecorded-video YouTube stream running around the clock, rather than create an AWS virtual linear channel, StreamNeo is a separate, simpler option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos to YouTube from the cloud; it does not stream camera input or send to other platforms.
