Vultr’s 2025 streaming guide recommends a starting configuration of 2 vCPUs, 4 GB RAM, 80 GB storage and 3 TB of bandwidth, but the current price for that exact shared-CPU setup is not established here. Your main variable cost after the instance is outbound bandwidth: Vultr documents a $0.01-per-GB charge above a plan’s allowance.
What Vultr configuration does its streaming guide recommend?
Vultr’s Create a Streaming Server with OBS and Ubuntu guide (© 2025) gives this as a starting configuration for its OBS streaming workflow:
- 2 vCPUs
- 4 GB RAM
- 80 GB storage
- 3 TB bandwidth
This is a published starting point, not a guarantee that every OBS scene, resolution or frame rate will run comfortably. Vultr says its standard Cloud Compute virtual machines use shared CPU. Its provisioning documentation distinguishes Cloud Compute from High Frequency and High Performance categories, which have different CPU or storage characteristics. Choose the service category deliberately rather than assuming that a GPU-based streaming product has the same price or resources as shared-CPU Cloud Compute.
Vultr’s guide says higher resolution and frame rate require more processing power, and recommends watching OBS CPU use: it warns that usage above 90% may cause dropped frames and buffering. Its stated rule of thumb is: “If your server has 2 VCPus or more, use the 720p (1280 * 720) resolution.” Treat that as guidance from Vultr’s setup article, not a universal performance guarantee.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How to find the actual Vultr monthly cost
- Select the deployment. In Vultr, choose Cloud Compute, the intended plan and the data-center location. Check the plan’s included outbound bandwidth as well as its CPU, memory and storage.
- Check the current rate for that location. Vultr identifies its pricing page as the source for current hourly and monthly rates, and notes that some prices vary by location. The current rate for the recommended specification is not established here, so confirm it in Vultr’s pricing interface before budgeting or publishing a total.
- Estimate stream transfer. Use the bitrate you intend to send and the hours the stream will run. For a constant bitrate, a useful decimal estimate is: GB ≈ bitrate in Mbps × streaming hours × 0.45. This is calculated payload volume, not a measured bill; protocol overhead, variable bitrate and other outbound traffic can change actual usage.
- Compare estimated outbound use with the allowance. Count only the traffic that is relevant to the plan’s outbound limit. Vultr says inbound traffic is not metered, while outbound internet data counts toward bandwidth limits.
- Add any applicable overage. Vultr Docs states that bandwidth above the plan’s allocated quota is billed at $0.01 per GB. Apply that rate only to the amount above the allocation, not to all stream traffic.
Keep the instance charge separate from optional items such as backups, snapshots, Windows licensing and taxes. Their current charges are not included in the base estimate above; include them only if your deployment uses them and you have checked their rates.
How much bandwidth does a 24/7 stream use?
The table estimates one continuous stream for a 30-day month. It uses Vultr’s OBS guide bitrate recommendations and the decimal formula above; figures are rounded. The guide’s bitrate ranges are recommendations, not independent measurements. The estimates assume a steady bitrate and exclude overhead and other outbound use.

| Vultr guide setting | Recommended bitrate range | Estimated transfer for 30 days |
|---|---|---|
| 720p / 30 FPS | 1.5–4.5 Mbps | 486–1,458 GB |
| 720p / 60 FPS | 2.5–6.5 Mbps | 810–2,106 GB |
| 1080p / 30 FPS | 3–6.5 Mbps | 972–2,106 GB |
| 1080p / 60 FPS | 4.5–9.5 Mbps | 1,458–3,078 GB |
On a plan with a 3 TB allowance, a continuous stream at 9.5 Mbps would calculate to about 3,078 GB over 30 days using decimal units, or roughly 78 GB over a 3,000 GB allowance before overhead or any other outbound data. At Vultr’s documented $0.01-per-GB overage rate, that example would be about $0.78 in overage if the full calculated excess were billable. Actual billed usage depends on Vultr’s accounting and the traffic the instance sends.
Vultr’s guide also lists higher bitrate ranges for 4K, but the specific values are not reproduced here. The practical cost implication is still clear: increasing bitrate raises outbound transfer, while higher resolution and frame rate can also increase CPU demand. Check the guide’s recommended settings against your chosen stream output and instance capacity rather than treating the 3 TB allowance or 2-vCPU baseline as suitable for every workload.

What changes the total cost?
- Region and plan selection: the hourly and monthly instance rate depends on the plan and can vary by location; verify the rate at selection time.
- Bitrate and uptime: a higher bitrate or more hours online sends more outbound data. A true 24/7 stream runs about 720 hours in a 30-day month.
- Plan bandwidth allowance: a plan with more included outbound bandwidth may reduce overages, but compare its current base price against your expected traffic.
- CPU headroom: a shared-CPU plan that is inexpensive on paper may not be a good fit if OBS rendering pushes CPU use near the level where Vultr warns of dropped frames and buffering.
- Additional services: backups, snapshots, licensing and taxes can change the invoice if added; do not assume they are included in a compute estimate.
Is Vultr Cloud Compute the right way to keep a YouTube stream running?
Vultr Cloud Compute is a configurable cloud-server route: you provision and maintain the instance and streaming software, then account for compute and outbound transfer. Vultr’s guide separately describes a Broadcaster Marketplace App based on an A16 GPU instance, which can use source files uploaded to the server for a 24/7 stream. That is a distinct hosted OBS route; its price and resources should not be inferred from the shared-CPU Cloud Compute starting configuration.
If you want an always-on YouTube stream from uploaded videos without keeping a server or computer running, StreamNeo is a purpose-built alternative: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key once and go live from the cloud. It has one flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and a first free day with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month.
