For a simple, continuous bhajan stream with a still image or basic visual, Ubuntu Server 24.04 LTS on a dedicated host, running FFmpeg, is a lightweight Linux setup. Use OBS Studio instead when you need scenes, animated overlays, or hands-on production. Neither Ubuntu’s minimum installation requirements nor OBS’s basic requirements guarantee that a particular machine can encode reliably; test the full setup at your intended resolution and bitrate before depending on it.
Choose the setup that matches your stream

This is an architecture recommendation, not a claim that a particular build has been tested. Pick a dedicated host you can leave running and reach for maintenance. A small-form-factor PC may suit that role if it can handle your actual encoding workload; the operating-system installation requirements alone do not establish that it can.
What hardware and Linux installation do you need?
Ubuntu Server requirements are not streaming requirements
Canonical’s published Ubuntu Server 24.04 LTS amd64 requirements list 1.5 GB minimum RAM and 5 GB minimum storage for ISO installs; cloud-image minimums are 1 GB RAM and 4 GB storage. Canonical suggests 3 GB or more RAM and 25 GB or more storage. These figures describe OS installation, not the resources FFmpeg or OBS will need for a given stream. OBS has additional graphical and encoding demands
OBS Studio’s basic Linux requirements include an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and an X window system or Wayland. OBS cautions that meeting those requirements does not ensure streaming capability: CPU needs vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. OBS Studio system requirements

For a fixed loop, avoid adding a graphical desktop unless you need it. If you choose OBS, evaluate the machine with the actual scenes and output settings rather than assuming that a machine capable of installing Ubuntu or opening OBS can stream continuously.
Set up the YouTube live connection and encoder
- Create the live stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Copy the server URL and stream key into your encoder’s streaming settings. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or expose it in a public configuration. YouTube live encoder setup and tips
- Use RTMPS when configuring the connection. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Its encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 as video codec options, up to 60 fps, and constant bitrate (CBR). For a simple stereo music stream, AAC is the conservative audio choice. - Set the keyframe interval to two seconds. YouTube recommends two seconds and says the interval should not exceed four seconds. For stereo AAC, its guidance lists 44.1 kHz audio and 128 kbps.
- Start with a resolution appropriate to the visual and connection. For a static devotional image or simple visual, 720p30 H.264 at YouTube’s recommended 3 Mbps is a sensible starting point. If the picture benefits from more detail and the connection can sustain it, YouTube recommends 5 Mbps for 1080p30 H.264. These are recommendations, not universal minimums.
- Allow for upload headroom. YouTube advises keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the total outgoing stream bitrate. Check sustained upload capacity from the actual streaming location; shared networks and disruptions can make a connection less dependable than a brief speed test suggests. FFmpeg is suited to a repeatable fixed-media workflow; OBS is the more suitable choice when you need a scene-based production. The specific automation commands and controls depend on your media, encoder build, and chosen workflow, so validate reconnect behavior and output quality on your own channel before treating it as unattended.

Plan for continuous operation and archives
Test recovery instead of assuming a restart is enough
A process manager can restart an encoder after a failure, but a restarted process is not proof that the YouTube live event has resumed correctly. Test the full failure-and-reconnect behavior with the channel and encoder you intend to use. Monitor the public watch page and listen or watch for quality problems; YouTube’s streaming tips recommend continuous monitoring and checking that local archive files are growing. End events periodically if YouTube archives matter
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a dependable recording, keep a local archive as a backup and plan event endings rather than relying on one indefinitely long live event. YouTube Help: Archive live streams

Make rights checks part of the setup
Use only bhajan recordings, artwork, and other visuals for which the channel has the necessary rights. YouTube’s live-stream terms require rights for live content, including music licensing rights. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content and may replace the stream image, interrupt the stream, or terminate it when material is identified. For licensed third-party content, YouTube says the rights holder may need to add the channel to a Content ID allowlist. Confirm permissions and any required allowlisting before going live; a recording being available online does not establish that you may rebroadcast it. YouTube live-streaming restrictions
Troubleshoot common 24/7 stream problems
