A playlist advances clips inside one source; it does not itself switch OBS scenes.
Choose how the videos should advance
| What you want | Start with | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Play a list in order without operator input | VLC Video playlist | Requires VLC; playlist loop, shuffle, and visibility settings determine behavior. |
| Choose the exact moment a video goes live | Separate scenes and Studio Mode | An operator must trigger each change. |
| Switch scenes when a clip ends | Advanced Scene Switcher macro | Requires a third-party plugin and compatibility checks; test triggers and fallback behavior. |
Set up a sequential playlist in OBS
- Install VLC if needed. The OBS Project’s Media Sources guide says VLC must be installed for the VLC Video source. Match its architecture to OBS: “If you are using 64-bit OBS, you must install 64-bit VLC.” The guide is dated 2022-01-11, so consult the current guide if the interface changes.
- Add the playlist source. In the OBS scene you want to use, add a VLC Video source and add the local prerecorded files in their intended order. Unlike the ordinary Media Source, which is for an individual local file, VLC Video supports a playlist.
- Choose playlist behavior. Check Loop Playlist and Shuffle Playlist rather than assuming their state. OBS documents loop on and shuffle off as defaults. Turn shuffle off for a fixed sequence; enable looping only if you want the list to start over after its last item.
- Set visibility behavior. Choose how playback behaves when the source is hidden or shown: the VLC source documents stop/restart, pause/resume, and always-play options. Decide deliberately, especially if you switch scenes containing the source.
- Position and check sound. Fit, crop, and place the source in the scene. In OBS, sources higher in the Sources dock layer over lower ones, and the eye control changes visibility. Check the audio mixer and listen to a test recording or broadcast for levels and unwanted overlapping audio. See the OBS Sources Guide.
- Test before going live. OBS recommends testing scene configuration and stream performance before a first live stream. Run through the full playlist and confirm order, looping, sound, and what appears when a clip ends.
A playlist advances clips within the VLC Video source. The documented setup does not establish that OBS will automatically end the YouTube stream when the playlist finishes.
Switch videos manually with Studio Mode
- Create a scene for each clip. Add each local file as a Media Source in its scene. Set Restart playback when source becomes active if returning to that scene should start the clip from the beginning. If Close file when inactive is enabled, OBS notes that the file may take a short time to reload when the scene becomes active again.
- Turn on Studio Mode. OBS separates the editable Preview scene from the live Program scene. Set up the next video in Preview while the current scene remains on air.
- Choose a transition. Select a transition such as Cut or Fade and set its duration to suit the presentation.
- Put the next scene live. When ready, click Transition or use a configured transition hotkey or Quick Transition. OBS describes Studio Mode and these transition controls in its Studio Mode guide.
This method gives the operator control over timing; it does not require a clip to finish before the next scene can go live.
Switch scenes automatically when a clip ends
For an end-triggered scene change, use a macro in the third-party Advanced Scene Switcher plugin. This adds a dependency and version-specific behavior rather than enabling a built-in OBS scene switcher feature.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Check compatibility before installing. The plugin’s OBS Project listing showed version 1.36.1, updated 2026-08-07, with OBS 31.1.1 as its minimum supported OBS version at that time. Check the listing for the current version, supported operating system, and OBS requirement before installing.
- Create and enable a macro. Configure a Media condition to detect the relevant source reaching the end of playback, then add a scene-switch action for the next scene. The plugin supports macros, Media conditions, and scene-switch actions; its update notes describe handling media playback completion.
- Limit when it can fire. Make the macro’s conditions specific to the intended scene and source names. Prevent repeat triggers or unintended loops, and choose a fallback scene in case a source ends unexpectedly.
- Test the whole sequence. Try clips of different lengths, then test restart and loop behavior. Do not assume the macro will behave identically across plugin versions or scene arrangements.
Connect OBS to YouTube separately
Video playback and scene switching are configured in OBS; YouTube connection details tell OBS where to send the encoded program. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select a live stream, then configure OBS as the encoder with YouTube’s supplied server URL and stream key. YouTube Help says, “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key private: it lets YouTube accept the encoder feed and identifies where that feed is sent. Follow YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance.
YouTube-side latency and DVR settings affect the viewer experience, not which OBS scene is active. Lower latency can increase playback buffering; when DVR is enabled, viewers can pause and resume from their paused position. Use video and audio you have the rights to stream, and follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and live-stream requirements.

Common problems and fixes
- VLC Video is missing or will not load: Install VLC and check that its architecture matches OBS. For 64-bit OBS, OBS’s Media Sources guide specifies 64-bit VLC.
- The playlist shuffles or does not repeat as expected: Open the VLC Video source settings and check Shuffle Playlist and Loop Playlist. OBS documents shuffle off and loop on as defaults, but verify the actual settings.
- A clip restarts, pauses, or stops after a scene change: Review that source’s visibility behavior. For individual Media Sources, check Restart playback when source becomes active and Close file when inactive; the latter can cause a short reload when returning.
- The next video does not go live when expected: With Studio Mode, the Preview scene remains separate from Program until you trigger a transition. With automation, confirm the macro is enabled, its source and scene names match, and its end condition is configured for the intended media.
- The scene changes repeatedly or to the wrong scene: Narrow the macro’s conditions, prevent repeat triggers, and configure a fallback. Re-test after changing plugin or OBS versions.
- YouTube is not receiving the stream: Check that OBS is configured with the server URL and stream key for the selected YouTube stream, and that the key has not been exposed or replaced. These connection settings are separate from the OBS playlist.
